I'd love to go, but its too far and days off are limited.” 8:11:28 PM 1/22/06 “Did I just mock myself?” 8:12:20 PM 1/22/06 “Florida is NOT a southern state. Its just in the southern portion of the country.” 8:23:03 PM 1/22/06 “SOUTH texas? in the same sentence? hey Alabama IS slow but not everyone is freaky... just most folks dont hike. outdoors in the real south seems to be bass fishing or catfish....” 8:24:17 PM 1/22/06 “I beg to differ.” 8:25:01 PM 1/22/06 “cool what part do you differ with>” 8:26:24 PM 1/22/06 “"just most folks dont hike. outdoors in the real south seems to be bass fishing or catfish...." Hey girl, I'll be waiving my terrible towel in a couple of weekends.” 9:47:55 PM 1/22/06 Florida and the outdoors “is the 6th burrough of NYC Outdoors is also road sign target shooting and drinking beer combined with cliff jumping or playing with snakes. Anybody know the last 3 words out of a rednecks mouth?” 3:39:12 PM 1/23/06 ““Florida is NOT a southern state. Its just in the southern portion of the country.” Roam Around 9:23:03 PM 1/22/06 ignore this user Very true. There are probably more people from the northern states and Canada that live there than from southern states.” 3:44:55 PM 1/23/06 “Florida is a southern state, as long as you are at least 10 miles from the beach.” 3:45:48 PM 1/23/06 “Outdoors is also road sign target shooting We get plenty of that in the north as well.” 3:46:38 PM 1/23/06 In case you don't know: “South is anyplace below Chicago. Midwest is between Chicago, Minneapolis/St. Paul and Green Bay. North is above the Twin Cities and the Midwest. There, now you know. last edited: 1/23/06 3:57:51 PM” 3:51:45 PM 1/23/06 “Male or female?” 3:55:29 PM 1/23/06 “I thought south was anywhere below the Mohawk River.” 3:56:48 PM 1/23/06 “outdoors in the real south seems to be bass fishing or catfish....” hiking 9:24:17 PM 1/22/06 don't fergit "noodeling". Where's that picture of the catfish on steroids?” 3:58:31 PM 1/23/06 last words “Hey, watch this!!” 5:20:03 PM 1/23/06 LET'S SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT “That is incorrect, Roam Around, lumberzac, and edoc. I certainly hope y’all aren’t “liberal” know-it-alls. If ya are, then you’d already know everything there is to know about Florida even if the facts are different than your preconceived ideas. South Florida is not “The South.” Usually the dividing line is placed somewhere around Orlando. According to one of my first classes at UF, sociologically, south Florida is the same as the urban northeast, although there are pockets of “The South” below that line. One of the best tells is that south Florida is full of selfish, self-centered, control freaks who want to do good things with other people’s money instead of their own and who refer to themselves as “liberals.” And what a surprise that they’re overwhelmingly registered Democrats. North Florida, however, is full of bible thumping, Southern Baptist, gun toting, pickup truck driving, personally responsible, fishin’, good ol’ boys and rednecks. It’s full of folks who would give you the shirt off their backs and are charitably generous with their own money. They refer to themselves as “conservative”, and they are overwhelmingly Republican… …Except for Gainesville, where I live in northern Florida. Because the largest employer here is the state, Gainesville is full of those selfish, self-centered, control freaks who want to do good things with other people’s money instead of their own, and are selfishly rude drivers. These are people who talk a good game, but don’t act in a manner that respects the welfare of others (typical of all leftist areas). Gainesville has lots of people who act like socialists and want high taxation (while not having a clue about economics), are always screaming for government solutions to problems, want lots of publicly funded artistic events but can’t keep the roads paved, and who refer to themselves as “liberals.” Apparently I have a high tolerance for idiots. The overwhelming majority of northern Florida is “The Deep South.”” 6:17:08 PM 1/23/06 roots “Born, raised, and spent my whole life in the south (except the year I spent in Kantucky). You're right, the south ends at a line below Jacksonville over to 'bama. I don't think Orlando is southern any more, maybe a little nawth or there. Not sure where the Deep South is; maybe Savanah/Cahrleston to the La/Tex state line (excluding most of Atlanta). I open doors for ladies, say yes mam, and Pulllease. BTW arclite, is you a cracker?” 7:46:14 PM 1/23/06 “Hey Colby cheeseguy, come on over for the Apalachicola trip. It'll be interesting to say the least. :)” 8:28:40 PM 1/23/06 “It depends on how you define cracker, edoc. Some people say you’ve got to be born here to be a cracker. I wasn’t. I made a conscious choice to live in a place that fits my personality. I consider the fact that I grew up in a different area of the country, experienced a different lifestyle, but made a conscious choice to live in cracker country as a pretty good indication that… I might be a redneck. Some people say you’ve got to have family here to be a cracker. I did. I am directly related to Robert E. Lee. My great grandparents built the first house in Babson Park (near Lake Wales), Florida back in the 1800s. My grandparents lived in Babson Park, Florida when I was growing up. We used to visit them every year. I have the bloodlines that say… I might be a redneck. Some people say you’ve got to inherit the mentality to be a cracker. My father grew up on a farm in North Dakota. That may not be the south, but you don’t get any more country than growing up on a farm in the middle of BF NOWHERE, North Dakota. My father was fairly intense, and I’ve been described that way, but we also have a laid-back sensibility. I loved my dad and inherited a laid-back country mentality that means… I might be a redneck. I wasn’t born in cracker country, edoc, but I’ve never felt so “at home” anywhere else I’ve ever been. I absolutely love the south with all the good and bad that goes with it (For the record, I find the south a whole lot less racially bigoted, and segregated, than the northeast). I am cracker by choice, not circumstance, and I think that’s a pretty good indicator that… I might be a redneck.” 6:01:43 AM 1/24/06 “(For the record, I find the south a whole lot less racially bigoted, and segregated, than the northeast) arclite 7:01:43 AM 1/24/06 ignore this user You are probably right on that one, at least for my area anyways. Besides urban centers, there is very little interaction between races. It's because of this lack interaction that makes a lot of people ignorant of others, which often leads to bigotry. With that said lets get back on track. What kinds of backpacking trips are available in Texas?” 7:35:40 AM 1/24/06 “1. Cracker Originally the white slave driver because he would "crack" the whip, hence the noun cracker.Yo homey pick the cotton faster cuz here comes ole Mr.Cracker with his whip! Source: MrCracker, Jun 29, 2003 2.Noun. Slang word used to refer to those of European ancestry. The word is thought to have either derived from the sound of a whip being cracked by slave owners, or because crackers are generally white in color. http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=cracker” 7:47:10 AM 1/24/06 Texas Hikes 7:59:11 AM 1/24/06 “That was my experience in the northeast, lumberzac: lot’s of diversity, very little interaction. And northeasterners like to point fingers at others. Hmmm… political affiliation: hypocrisy, denial, lack of honesty, and projection. We may be on to something here. I live in an upper middleclass neighborhood here. My neighbors on one side are black. I’d say 20% of the neighborhood is made up of black professionals. My next door neighbors have been here for two years. We watch each other’s houses, bake each other cookies at Christmas, and talk in the yard. I never saw that level of interaction in the northeast, in an upper middleclass neighborhood. The country folks here all go fishing together, black and white. I know two black, country guys at work who are married to the sisters of white, country guys at work. They all get along great. We all (black and white) hang out together in the smoking area at work and tease each other about our football teams. I knew few blacks, and never had any black friends up north. I have two good black friends here. I went to the Outback Bowl with one of them. We go kayaking together. It isn’t all milk-and-honey in the south, but I find the racial integration far superior to the northeast. And still Democrats try to paint the "red-state" south as a bunch of racists. Hollywood has continued its southern stereotype bigotry for years. Many northeasterners act like they feel superior to those poor, ignorant, bigoted southerners. Human behavior cracks me up sometimes. If it weren’t so sad, it’d really be funny.” 5:46:05 PM 1/25/06 when I hear backpacking in the south “I think of.... ![]() and ![]() gawd I love Pisgah National Forest!!!!!” 6:41:08 PM 1/25/06 Is that....... “a picture of Shining Rock with Richland Balsam, and the Smokies behind them, in the background? I can't place the lower one. Is it looking down to NC 215? BTW, Denial is more than a long river in Africa.” 6:51:02 PM 1/25/06 “the top picture is a meadow on the western side of the ridge going up towards Mt. Gibbs (not far from the State Park bndry line) with Big and Little Butt in the background and the lower one is the Black Mountain range viewed from Little Butt.” 7:01:10 PM 1/25/06 “Heading over the Smoky Mts today from Gatlingbug in route to meet Nowslimmer at Deep Creek CG then on to the AT to do another AT section Thurs - Sun. Woo Hoo!!!!!! See y'all Monday!!!” 8:12:58 AM 6/29/06 “You suck! Have fun.” 8:15:53 AM 6/29/06 “SS, glad to see you finally got out, have fun” 8:36:50 AM 6/29/06 “They let him out?? Outstanding!!” 8:41:17 AM 6/29/06 “if it wasn't for Tennessee, Texas would be Northern Mexico ;)" ~Ewker Yeah... and if it wasn't for France we'd all be speaking English. “Florida is NOT a southern state. Its just in the southern portion of the country.” ~Roam Around Oh contraire. Florida, umpteen miles inland and away from the urban areas, is as Southern as peanuts floating in a CoCola bottle. All Southern metro areas have a fairly high number of transplants from all across the country. Florida's population just happens to tilt heavily toward urbanites... "townies". South FL? Great googly moogly! One would be hard pressed to get more "Southern" than Belle Glade, et al. I was one of five white kids among the Jackson High School Marching Red Devils. I received more "sensitivity training" on the bus to and from a road game than most folks, Southern or Northern, get in a lifetime... Don't start with this "Southern racists" crap - you're liable to make yourself look afool.” 11:44:15 AM 6/29/06 “nothing like trolling gojo” 11:48:52 AM 6/29/06 “SS - I'll be in P'cola Sun to Thur. We're going to watch the Blue Angels practice on Wed morning. I suspect Reece will love it.” 11:51:30 AM 6/29/06 “That line about speaking English occured to me only recently. No doubt that France saved our bacon during the Revolution. I've forgiven them for their seemingly anti-American stances on certain issues. Vive le France! No doubt about the role of Tennesseeans in Texas' history too. It's all wholesome fun, this regional rivalry we Americans have. I'm sure it's the same everywhere. We all know that when the chips are down, we will come together as one - E Pluribus Unum - and overcome any obstacle thrown at us from any direction, whether borne by man, beast, or the Lord God himself! God Bless America1” 12:01:58 PM 6/29/06
