South Florida is not “The South.” Usually the dividing line is placed somewhere around Orlando. According to one of my first classes at UF, sociologically, south Florida is the same as the urban northeast, although there are pockets of “The South” below that line.

One of the best tells is that south Florida is full of selfish, self-centered, control freaks who want to do good things with other people’s money instead of their own and who refer to themselves as “liberals.” And what a surprise that they’re overwhelmingly registered Democrats.




North Florida, however, is full of bible thumping, Southern Baptist, gun toting, pickup truck driving, personally responsible, fishin’, good ol’ boys and rednecks. It’s full of folks who would give you the shirt off their backs and are charitably generous with their own money. They refer to themselves as “conservative”, and they are overwhelmingly Republican…

…Except for Gainesville, where I live in northern Florida. Because the largest employer here is the state, Gainesville is full of those selfish, self-centered, control freaks who want to do good things with other people’s money instead of their own, and are selfishly rude drivers. These are people who talk a good game, but don’t act in a manner that respects the welfare of others (typical of all leftist areas). Gainesville has lots of people who act like socialists and want high taxation (while not having a clue about economics), are always screaming for government solutions to problems, want lots of publicly funded artistic events but can’t keep the roads paved, and who refer to themselves as “liberals.” Apparently I have a high tolerance for idiots.

You're right, the south ends at a line below Jacksonville over to 'bama. I don't think Orlando is southern any more, maybe a little nawth or there.

Not sure where the Deep South is; maybe Savanah/Cahrleston to the La/Tex state line (excluding most of Atlanta).

Some people say you’ve got to be born here to be a cracker. I wasn’t. I made a conscious choice to live in a place that fits my personality. I consider the fact that I grew up in a different area of the country, experienced a different lifestyle, but made a conscious choice to live in cracker country as a pretty good indication that… I might be a redneck.

My great grandparents built the first house in Babson Park (near Lake Wales), Florida back in the 1800s. My grandparents lived in Babson Park, Florida when I was growing up. We used to visit them every year. I have the bloodlines that say… I might be a redneck.

Some people say you’ve got to inherit the mentality to be a cracker. My father grew up on a farm in North Dakota. That may not be the south, but you don’t get any more country than growing up on a farm in the middle of BF NOWHERE, North Dakota. My father was fairly intense, and I’ve been described that way, but we also have a laid-back sensibility. I loved my dad and inherited a laid-back country mentality that means… I might be a redneck.




I wasn’t born in cracker country, edoc, but I’ve never felt so “at home” anywhere else I’ve ever been. I absolutely love the south with all the good and bad that goes with it (For the record, I find the south a whole lot less racially bigoted, and segregated, than the northeast). I am cracker by choice, not circumstance, and I think that’s a pretty good indicator that… I might be a redneck.”

You are probably right on that one, at least for my area anyways. Besides urban centers, there is very little interaction between races. It's because of this lack interaction that makes a lot of people ignorant of others, which often leads to bigotry.

I live in an upper middleclass neighborhood here. My neighbors on one side are black. I’d say 20% of the neighborhood is made up of black professionals. My next door neighbors have been here for two years. We watch each other’s houses, bake each other cookies at Christmas, and talk in the yard. Oh contraire. Florida, umpteen miles inland and away from the urban areas, is as Southern as peanuts floating in a CoCola bottle. All Southern metro areas have a fairly high number of transplants from all across the country. Florida's population just happens to tilt heavily toward urbanites... "townies".

South FL? Great googly moogly! One would be hard pressed to get more "Southern" than Belle Glade, et al.
