I'm thinking of NorthVille-Lake Placid in 2007 with my wife, unless we get to it this year.

pedxing, you'll love the trail except the two road walking parts. The trail mostly cuts through the valleys, but the lakes and ponds are beautiful. I completed the trail in September of '03 with my cousin. That ended up being a perfect time to hike it. No bug, and almost no people. We ended up only seeing 18 other hikers over 10 days. Only one was a thru hiker; a south bounder that we ran into our first day. We have discussed possibly doing the trail again this summer. I'm not sure how this will pan out, as it will depend on whether or not my cousin’s wife will be up for the hike.

These are the photos I took durring the hike.

An obscure fact:
While the Vermont Long Trail is credited as the United States oldest long-distance trail, the 133-mile Northville-Placid Trail was actually completed in 1923, 7 years before the Long Trail was completed. The planning and start of construction of the Long Trail does predate the NPT’s by about 12 years.

Interesting Zac. I wonder if the LT's claim is based on Start time or some threshold for length. Or maybe it was considered to have been a Long Distance trailt that was completed and then extended (the LT history I read talks about it being completed and gradually extended to cover the whole Canada to Mass stress).

Since I've done the LT, I'm going to back their claim to the hilt with pride and enduring loyalty. My mind is absolutely closed on the issue (at least until I've done the NLP).

I've never done the Long Trail, but I would still give it credit as the oldest, simply based on the fact that it was started first and the fact that a long distance trail is never truly complete. The trails are constantly changing.

Makes sense to me. Actually, I don't care much except that when I ran into AT thru-hikers some ask "are you a thru-hiker?" and I'd reply "Yes, but LT, not AT" and some would ask "What's the LT?" and I'd throw in the "fact" about it being America's oldest. I'd feel bad if I was just passing along LT hype and not real info.

LOL

I hope I get a chance to hike it. Although as things stand for me now, I would have to do it in peaces as I only get 2 weeks paid vacation a year.

I'm thinking seriously of hiking the LT again this summer. It looks like I'll do it in August, but starting in the South this time. I can't promise to hike at anyone else's pace, but I'd be interested in trying to start with someone or meet up for a section along the way.

I ended up doing the N-P last year, had thought about doing the JMT - but expenses got tight and I figured I'd stay closer to home.
