Mayhem in the Kitchen

“I consider myself a decent cook, but I had a humbling experience in the kitchen this weekend.

It was a rainy Sunday, I was watching a blowout football game on TV and my daughter was knapping and i had a sweet tooth, so I decided to make a batch of brownies. I whipped up a batch of double chocolate brownies and 20 minutes later they were done. When my daughter woke up we had hot brownies with ice cream. (Ok maybe I had more than one :)

So, you're thinking. This doesn't sound like such a bad experience?

After i crashed from my suger high, I lay down on the couch to watch more football. I started drifting off to sleep and worried about what my daugther would get into if I did. I decided to get up and fix a cup of hot Irish breakfast tea to wake me up.

I put a kettle of water on the stove to heat and went to do a couple things. I came back and was getting the tea bag ready. What I didn't realize is that I'd turned on the heat under the pyrex dish of brownies and not the tea kettle.

What happened next was disturbing...if you've ever wondered how to make a bomb in your kitchen, I'll send you the recipe.......: )

The pyrex dish exploded...and I don't mean popped into a couple pieces. Glass flew at least 20 feet in all directions, into my living room, across the kitchen, small pieces stuck into the wall. My bare feet were surrounded in tiny shards. Glass dust that looked like glitter covered the top of what was left of the brownies. I watched frozen in horror while the brownies sitting on the glowing red burner melted and oozed down into my stove, there was chocolate down the front of my shirt on the side of the fridge. I finally reached and turned the burner off the smell of burnt brownies starting to choke my lungs.

I vaguely remember my daughter coming to the edge of the kitchen and looking on in wide-eyed horror. All she could muster was "uh-oh!" and "mess"

I began the long process of cleaning up. A few minutes into cleaning I hear my daughter's "Uh-oh!" again from the other room. I go to check and she's dumped a huge bag of puffed wheat cereal all over the living room carpet. I just sighed and went back to cleaning.

Next time I tackle brownies on a rainy Sunday afternoon, I'll be sure to make a peace offering to the Kitchen gods before I get started.”

“LOL, great story...i've had one of those pyrex dishes break too...for some reason they don't just break, they shatter into thousands of pieces...i thought one of the reasons for having kids is so THEY clean up these things?”

“Well at least you got to have some brownies before disaster struck! LOL! At first I thought you were going to say they were ruined before you got to eat any...WHEW.”

“Hey that reminds me, I'm supposed to make Laurel some filled cupcakes in the next few days. I have a Williams Sonoma custard filled cupcake mix. Laurel opened the box the other day, and spent an entire afternoon lamenting that there were no cupcakes in the box.”

“That's not a mess you let kids clean up thrifty. Unless you wanna skip football for a visit to the emergency room for stitches.

If I remember the pie pan I shattered broke into millions of shards capable of easily slicing a finger.”

“well, before you report me to child protective services, please note the LOL after my post ;) ...i'd never let my kid clean that up either”

“She's two. I did tell her she needed to clean up the puffed wheat. When I went back in to check on her, she was laying in the pile and eating them off the carpet with her mouth. : )”

“Same thing happened to me, except it wasn't brownies. The freaking glass left scorch marks on my linoleum floor. Imagine what a busted windshield looks like with all those tiny little pieces held together by the "glue" in the glass. Now imagine all those pieces without the glue being shot out of blunderbus

Same thing with a pyrex dish happened with my sister.
She had sat a pyrex dish with something she had baked on the top of the stove to cool. A teenage kid 'helping' her cook turned the wrong burner on to heat up some string beans.
The pyrex dish blew up much like yours.
Both my sister and the kid were out of the kitchen area, by luck.”

“Whoa..next time you want crunchy brownies try adding some nuts...easier on the teeth than Pyrex..LOL..you have my sympathy...anyone who has ever had to clean up shattered pyrex knows what a complete nightmare it is...”

Glad to hear some one has done the same thing!!! I even welded a cookie sheet an eletric stove once. Man the sparks were really cool, had to replace the burner though!!!

“I haven't had anything as spectacular as exploding pyrex, or welding in the oven (my mom did that.) I was making flan though, and swirled hard caramelized sugar out of the flan mold and across one hand. All of my family and HPM"s family were out of town at the time ( we were still dating.) The tranlucent pink blisters were spectacular, and caused one of my university profs to nearly vomit.”

“I have a wooden cutting board with a nice electric stove imprint charred on it's underside. Didn't catch fire, just got branded. At one point I had enameled burner covers; these had gotten burners turned on under them times too numerous to count but seemed to withstand the abuse, and also largely to have protected whatever may have been sitting on top.”

“Corelle dishes behave exactly the same way when they break. It's pretty difficult to break one; I had to drop a plate on a pyrex dish to get it to explode.

When I was 15 I lived at a campground for a summer. My dad and I were boiling eggs on the electric range in the common kitchen area and we forgot. The water boiled off, the eggs and pan simmered and burned till we smelled it sometime later....”

Was my Mom visiting? She did that to my wooden cutting board too. I am guilty of forgetting and leaving a burner on after I am done cooking.”

“I think everyone's mom has a branded wooden cutting board. Actually my dad finished it off out on the grill. Accidentally, of course. Oak-smoked steaks.”

“IJ, just glad you or your daughter wasn't hurt. Luckily I haven't had that happen to me but I have broken a few Corelle plates before. They shatter like crazy also”

Hee Hee, you must not buy a lot of mixes. Laurel figured a box with cupcakes on it SHOULD have had cupcakes in it.

“Yep, just not baking that often. Baking's tetchy with a gas powered oven. The temperature varies a lot, and there's hot and cool zones.”
