I once drank a whole 1/5 of that stuff. WOW! That was a hang over I will never forget.

Crap like Heaven Hill and Early Time is made from primarily flavored cheap grain alcohol. You might as well drink gasoline. That stuff will tear you up.

Same with cheap tequillas. It's cheap grain alcohol with tequilla flavoring. There's no agave (sp) in it at all.

i din't know you could legally make tequilla with out agavee

If you look closely at the label I think it will say something like tequilla flavored liquor or something. When the agavee crop was devastated a few years ago a lot of bars and stuff were serving that crap in their margaritas because the price of real tequilla went through the roof.

I think (but I ain't betting on it)to be Tequila it has to have some agave in it.
That being said, my lips will not touch anything that isn't 100% blue agave. And it better be aged at least a year.

And, yes, as a matter of fact, I am a tequila snob. Why do you ask?

I also thought vodka was made from potatoes. I drink a lot of Ketel One with tonic water and a lime. One of my fav mixed drinks.

I heart Ketel One too, I drink it in dirty martinis. I used to drink it w/tonic water, until I found out how much sugar is in that stuff!! While I'm killing myself w/alcohol (kidding), I like to do the healthy thing and limit my sugar intake...LOL.

Seriously though, it has as much sugar as soda pop, and it doesn't even taste sweet! I don't think so anyway.

I'll take a stab at it.
1. Has to be made in Bourbon County
2. Is distilled from corn only
3. Is aged in new, fired oak barrels.”

2. distilled from 80%(?) corn mash

i cant remember the exact percentage it has to be.”
jurbania

Well being a KY boy I can say LZ is almost right but it does not have to be distilled in Bourbon Co. In fact the county of Bourbon in KY is dry. Corn mash is correct and the charred oak barrel has to be the first time use, anything aged in it afterwards can not be called Bourbon whiskey. The only bourbon whiskey that can be called by the singular name of bourbon has to be made in the commonwealth of KY. This is a fed'ral law made by our guverment. All others made in other states such as the rot gut with a black label made in TN are just wanna-bees.

So if you want to drink BOURBON it has to be distilled and aged in the Commonwealth of KY.
If you want to drink just bourbon whiskey any other place in the world can distill it...even China!

My favorite trail whiskey is Knob Creek-good hun'rd proof bourbon

And there you have it...

What is Tennessee Whiskey?

Tennessee whiskey is not a bourbon. By federal regulation, it is a separate whiskey category that differs primarily in the extra steps, that take place immediately after distilling, such as the charcoal mellowing. At that time in the distillation process, the whiskey is seeped very slowly through vats packed with charcoal. There are only two brands of Tennessee whiskey: George Dickel and those other guys. Both use aged, hard sugar maple trees to make their own charcoal, but George Dickel still fires its charcoal the old-fashioned way in the open air.

What is sour mash?

Sour mash, which also is sippin’ whiskey and Tennessee whiskey, is a frequently misunderstood term. Sour mash simply refers to the technique used in the preparation of most, if not all, straight whiskey. The sour mash method makes the yield more efficient. The technique involves seeding, or seasoning, a new batch of mash with a portion of the previous day’s mash. This is known as “baskset,” “setback” or “stilling back” and is taken from the base of the still. It may be added to the grain mash in the cooker, the yeast mash, the fermenting vessels, or all three. This sour mash process helps ensure that the new run of whiskey will have exact same taste as the previous day’s distillation. The process ensures continuity in fermentation and guards against the invasion of wild yeast. Sour mash got its name because the thin spirit “beer” remaining had a slightly acidic taste, although the resultant whiskey was anything but sour.

Southern Comfort, ew! It's the corn aspect of bourbon that I dislike. I like dry dry dry. My favorite is Jameson (straight) and Canadian Club for my Manhattans.

And yes, vodka is made from potatoes. I saw a special on it when I was in France (my French is pretty good, so I'm confident in my statement. hee hee)

Oooh, Ooooh, I know!
The barrels have to be new because there is a sugar present in the freshly charred oak which adds to the final character. After that the barrels are used for aging sherry and various other concoctions.

I prefer Korbel Brandy (very smoooooth)myself.

Or my new favorite, Zapopan Tequila, very good and very price effective

Vodka
Traditionally, vodka WAS made from potatoes. However, market pressures being what they are, most are now make from grain neutral spirits. I found this out from someone with a wheat allergy. Apparently that allergy can be even be triggered by distilled alchohol made from wheat (go figure) and he was only able to find 2 vodkas sold in the U.S. that were strictly potato.

I usually don't drink on the trail. I have had a few beers on canoe trips when my brother-in-law miraculously produced a case at our island campsite in the middle of no-where. They do have pics of me sloshed (on white wine) at a car camping site. Probably the only way they could get me to stay.

Gotta try the Knob Creek. I remember sticks drinking Old Weller in NM. I tried the Weller 100 on a trip and it burns like fire. Call my a yuppie, but I still like the black label Jack Daniels after trying other things.

On Texas hikes I'll bring my buddy Jose, after trying others I don't like as well.

I rarely carry liquor on the trail when backpacking alone. Good spirits are meant to be shared. Good thing I rarely backpack alone:)

In all seriousness though, when I do get to backpack alone, I guess it becomes as much of an inward journey as a physical one.

note: It is not to say that drinking can't coexist with a spirtual quest; after all, I have witnessed more than a few people speaking in tongues after a bottle of bourbon.
