beginner needing a trail “hello, all i am a beginner and i am in excellent shape, i need a good trail that i can hike during the last week of march that is NOT snow covered!!! i want a week long trip. preferably something that is in the woods... if not i trust your guys judgement...anywhere in the country just tell me the trail name and state” 6:35:35 AM 1/28/06 “We're pretty much snow covered in Northern Wisconsin. Summer is the 2nd week in July, check back then.” 6:57:02 AM 1/28/06 “You can be in great shape but trouble may find you if you don't have the skills. There are a couple of weekend trips posted on the Trips page. The PA hike on Tussey Ridge should be pretty challenging and can easily be extended since that trails goes forever. Note that this is an ENS trip and while it is only a 16 mile dayhike, the scrambles and rock gardens are enough to make a grown TrailTalker cry.” 7:44:49 AM 1/28/06 “gila wilderness is great in late March. Bandelier and Canyonlands are pretty nice, could still get a dusting, cold nights.” 7:48:46 AM 1/28/06 “Why does Tina need a Giant Speedo?” 10:02:16 AM 1/28/06 “Dat's what I wanna know!” 10:06:18 AM 1/28/06 “You 2 sound like Mike Wilbon and Tony Kornheiser.” 10:14:23 AM 1/28/06 “LOL! Dose guys on National TV somewhere?” 10:26:53 AM 1/28/06 “Hey Giantinaspedo, First we must call you a TROLL! Now that's ouit of the way. The best thing would be to search for local backpacing clubs. Find an REI or other backpacker store and ask the folks there where you can meet people. The owners of most of the stores I shop at are outdoor types themselves and can offer lots of knowledge. They can also steer you to the right knid of gear for the first time purchase. Otherwise you may end up like many of us with several sets of gear. The lighter and more functional stuff being or more recent purchases. Then try to hook up with a group hike that has other beginners along. Certainly do some dayhiking with your gear to get a feel for it before leaving on a week long trip.” 11:47:50 AM 1/28/06 Bearmagnet “Yeah, they host a sports talk show, Pardon the Interruption, on ESPN. They're insightful, irreverent and funny as hell.” 12:21:14 PM 1/28/06 “What about “Yellowstone”??? I am thinking of checking that out during the same time period. I am gonna post something about hiking Yellowstone sometime today.. See ya later. Randall” 1:29:35 PM 1/28/06 “Yellowstone in March? Snow Cover? You Betcha!” 1:45:54 PM 1/28/06 Not good for no snow “Nope not good for no snow in March, lol I guess I am going someplace else.” 1:49:55 PM 1/28/06 “I've seen 'em on local shows. love Tony's column in the Post. Maybe I need to get cable again?” 3:37:27 PM 1/28/06 “How about Mammoth Caves Randall????” 6:35:21 PM 1/28/06 “Lone Star Hiking Trail in East Texas. Go to lshtclub.com for maps. It's about 120 miles long. It runs thru the Sam Houston National Forest east to west. Woods, bottoms, not too much change in elevations but really nice trail and it is well maintained. Bottomland that is, not bottoms unless you meet some along the way ;) last edited: 1/28/06 8:49:06 PM” 8:46:07 PM 1/28/06 “I only been to Big Bend in August but, it should be mostly snow free in March. Lots of valley hiking can be done if the upper elevations are snowed in. It is definitely worth consideration. There are some folks here that hike Big Bend regularly. http://www.virtualbigbend.com/tour/emory_peak/java/index.php http://www.nps.gov/bibe/dailyreport/index.htm” 10:46:28 PM 1/28/06 “Smokies? take the AT from Fontana to Davenport.” 11:15:42 PM 1/28/06
