I doubt that it's the best, but folgers coffee bags worked for me on the trail. Something about hikin' that makes regular old generic folgers taste like gourmet. A side note is that if your drain your crankcase of that old oil it will provide a sludge that is pretty similar to Starbucks.

Do a search for coffee threads. It's a hotbutton topic around here. FWIW, I like Millstone brand light roast varieties using a filter spoon or a mesh tea ball.

The folgers singles (tea bag type things) have been the best option i've tried yet.

Used a coffee press for a long time, it made good coffee but was too messy and bulky.

For some reason although I am a regular coffee drinker at home, on the trail I tend to drink tea. While I drink my cofee black, no sugar, I take lots of sugar in my tea. At home I don't need the extra calories, but when hiking that extra bit of energy in the morning does not go to waste (or waist for that matter)

I'm with pathman - the 1-cup drip filter. As for the coffee itself, I take whatever grind I'm drinking at the time. Weekend before last it was the french roast from my fave shop here in town. I think Starbucks has a "Yukon Blend" that I may take to the Yukon in April - seems appropriate.

I have one of those mini-espresso makers, too, but don't take it backpacking. I've used it car-camping, and it's great!

That's what I've been using. There's very little mess and no measuring involved. BTW, Maxwell house makes them as well.

Here you go
go to www.bodumusa.com check in the online shop under coffee and presses, check out the FILTRE BELGIQUE, one cup filter. put the coffee on a metal screen at the bottom, put the water distributor on top, put it in the cup and pour the water over it.....just like home brew.

I'm always the only guy that uses freeze-dried instant on these threads. It's just simpler and doesn't come in a foil wrapper. And it all tastes good on a backpacking trip.

last yr at Trail Days they gave away free samples of One Fresh Cup. It is good but expensive. You can buy it on this website http://www.minimus.biz/detail.aspx?ID=7617

This site is good for individual packets of almost anything you need

I think I got you all beat ....
My son manages a coffe shop/book store and somehow manged to get me hooked on fresh ground coffee. I have a cuisinart (spl?) at home that grinds just before it brews. I grind some beans the night before a trip and put them in a zip-lock. If you look in the super market where they sell coffee filters look for these big disposable tea bags. I put a couple of teaspoons ... OK ... OK .... tablespoons in the filter and dunk it in a mug of hot water. My friends, it doesn't get any better than that!!!

Best Coffee
The best coffee around here "The Coffee that Won the West" is "ARBUCKLES"--I get it at Hubbbell Trading Post,National Historic Site, NPS., in Ganado, AZ. Comes with a peppermint candy stick in it--you gots to grind it youself. I don't have their site address to give you but you'll find it as National Park Service info: They'll be happy to point you where you can get some.

I brought home a Melitta "one cup joe" but haven't tried it. It's a lightweight plastic filter top you set on the coffee cup/mug and pour boiling water through.

I like my little espresso maker too. Once Artex made me some in Ocala I had to have my own.

dhutch, let me know how it works. A friend bought something similar just before Christmas. I tried a cup and it tasted like instant coffee. It was nasty but it might be the brand of coffee pod we used.

Sunshine,
This doesn't take a pod. I wish I knew how to post up a picture.

I think what you are talking about is a one cup pod machine like Home Cafe or similar. I happen to be in the small kitchen appliances business right now and feel that if we don't start seeing better pods, those won't really take off. We had a Senseo in our office for a while but couldn't get the nice dark coffee I like in a pod, so it sits and I use the Bunn.

dhutch, i picked up something like the one cup joe filter at a thrift store for $1...it's the reusable kind that doesn't use a paper filter...when you use it to "brew" coffee, it ends up kinda week but i use it on the trail to strain my cowboy coffee

Bodum for me
One of the reasons the BUNN coffeemaker worked so well (until they started bursting into flames) was that they spread the water more or less evenly across the grounds.

The Bodum and others like the Swiss Gold have a two part system. The grounds go in a bottom container and then a top part has the holes for the water to spread it out over the grounds....I also go for the coffee with chickory for the strong kick

Used Coffee Grounds?
The other day in the store the lady behind me had these 'logs' that looked like the compressed sawdust type, except these were made with used coffee grounds. I asked her if it smelt like coffee when she burned them and she said no not particularly. I just wonder who goes to the trouble of collecting them, shipping them to a processing facility, etc.

Java Juice anyone?
I picked this article up this morning in the backpackinglight newsletter. Liquid coffee extract. Somebody buy it and tell me how it tastes...

http://www.backpackinglight.com/cgi-bin/backpackinglight/java_juice_orwm2006.html

Like I said, I drink tea on the trail. Still, this might be interesting. My first thought is that this would be messy if it spilled. Then again I have spilled instant coffee in my pack and if any moisture gets into the spill I will attest the mess it makes is crazy evil.

.5 oz makes 12-16 oz of coffee. My first thought is that packing for 6 cups of coffee (2 cups/day for 3 days) would be 3 oz of weight. That's not bad if you are carrying a coffee pot and the trimmings for "real" coffee... but it's a lot heavier than instant.

Those coffee "tea bags" are also very light, much less than 3 oz for 6 cups, but I always found the coffee they make to be weak and lacking flavor.

Anyway, I thought it was cool and the review says it makes pretty good coffee too...

140 mg of caffeine per serving ... zowie!

Try this: Pour a C-ration coffee packet in your mouth and wash it down with a mouthful of canteen water: Real fine in a Monsoon.

Jimmy San to solve the weak coffee dilema from the tea bag style. Use two bags per cup, steep xtra long then squeaze the coffee bag to wring out that last little bit of caffeine goodness. It adds a touch of weight but for me weight of coffee is a non-issue.

I have some tea bag wrappers (for green tea). I wonder if I put coffee in them if I would get better results using like French Roast and using more than the off-the-shelf bags contain. I could use a grind that was less course as well. Might be worth a try.

Nescafe Taster's Choice Coffee Singles

I posted this in another thread but I don't think too many saw it.

Found these Nescafe Taster's Choice instant coffee singles in the Dollar Store today.
Seven to a box.
Add 6 oz hot water.
The seven of them weighed 0.8 oz on my digital scale, so figure a little over 0.1 oz each.
They are about the same size as the Crystal Light singles
