“Im thinking of adding it to the list of trails to do soon...” 9:21:48 AM 1/30/06 “LeSubtil did it in two sections I beleive.” 9:25:55 AM 1/30/06 “me” 9:26:03 AM 1/30/06 “Yes.” 9:27:05 AM 1/30/06 “u2?” 9:28:06 AM 1/30/06 “you guys got any trip reports I could read?” 9:28:41 AM 1/30/06 “yup” 9:30:08 AM 1/30/06 “I'm just saying that, yes, someone has thru-hiked the SHT.” 9:30:15 AM 1/30/06 “link nimblefoot? :)” 9:31:32 AM 1/30/06 “Have you tried a Search?” 9:32:12 AM 1/30/06 “now, now, nowslimmer, whats the point of being a girl if I cant get the guys to do stuff for me? (batting eyes)” 9:33:54 AM 1/30/06 “Hard to please, ain't she? I've heard they get that way once they marry.” 9:34:21 AM 1/30/06 “big puppy dog eyes....” 9:35:11 AM 1/30/06 “superior hike has anyone done it yet of course someone has” 9:36:30 AM 1/30/06 “I found a bunch, but don't know how to do a link. The best seems to be by a guy named Snake Eyes, IMHO.” 9:49:19 AM 1/30/06 “http://www.thebackpacker.com/trails/mn/trail_566.php http://shta.org/Buddy/index.php I want you to know the batting eye bit isn't what made me take pity on you SC...it was all those guys taking you literally...LOL...” 9:49:50 AM 1/30/06 “Pretty dry, Mata. It does not capture the poetry that is the Superior Hiking Trail. BTW, SC, I found it to be prettier than 80% of the AT.” 9:52:55 AM 1/30/06 “A man cannot begin to understand women until he divorces one!” 9:54:42 AM 1/30/06 “nimblefoot you're such a dork ;) but I luv ya anyway. Thanks mataharihiker :)” 9:55:01 AM 1/30/06 “I'd be hurt right now if I had feelings.” 9:56:57 AM 1/30/06 “I did a lot of it; Split Rock to Magney. I did write trip reports and have some webshot albums.” 10:36:34 AM 1/30/06 “The lovely thing about the SHT is the geology of the area...you have all these cool rocks, with many wonderful vistas plus a truly ooh-aah series of waterfalls. You must try and hike to all of them...they are amazingly varied from the huge High Falls of the Pigeon River (off trail, I admit), the intimate Cascade Falls, Devil's Kettle Falls, the tempesteous Temperance River which roars through a basalt canyon, the gorges of the Caribou, Kadunce..it goes on and on and through it all you have the wonderful, varied North woods...I think if I had to choose one trail to thru-hike east of the Rockies, this would be my choice for scenic beauty and peaceful magnificience...that said, avoid it in high summer unless you really know how to cope with mosquitoes and blackflies...a complete bugsuit works well but it is often too hot and humid to wear one...” 10:58:59 AM 1/30/06 “I did it in July/August and the bugs were no problem unless you're a sissy. Are you a sissy? I'd also suggest you bring a lot of weed with you. The rocks, the streams, the views; the throbbing pulse of the rocks and the streams that roar through your arteries, not to mention the mosquitoes that bore into your brain...but who cares, you weren't using it anyway.” 11:47:15 AM 1/30/06 “I am a sissy..I hate it when I suck down bugs everytime I breath...I don't like backpacking when it's 80-90 degrees with the humidity the same...I've been camping up there and seen backpackers fleeing Magney after being driven mad by mosquitoes...I don't know about you but I hike for enjoyment and not to see how much misery I can put up with...of course, I've been up there in July and had no bugs, heat or humidity...once....LOL....” 12:30:31 PM 1/30/06 “MH, I was calling SC a sissy, not you. However, if you have a need to confess... It is a great hike and I'm definitely going to do it again and again and again....:)” 1:13:10 PM 1/30/06 “i've done most of it in sections.” 3:44:12 PM 1/30/06 “deet and premetheron ... better living through chemicals ... that's my motto.” 4:31:51 PM 1/30/06 “Do it in September and you might bump into the Whiskey Trek gang.” 5:07:47 PM 1/30/06 “bugs dont bug me :) I mean look at all the ticks I took home last summer :D for criks sake, I have over 30 pet spiders, scorpions, cockroaches, millapeads, snakes....etc.” 7:19:51 PM 1/30/06 “i tell you what, whiskey trek is awesome.” 9:50:07 PM 1/30/06 “I've done almost all of it but in sections. I think I only missed the very northern section. Took me about 1-1/2 years. I'd love to do it in one haul, though. I hiked a little bit of it with Le Subtil. And some with young Oldie. Most of it I did by myself. I do miss that trail... It's responsible for my sanity. or maybe my lack thereof... from the Superior Hiking Trail site: "The first documented "through-hiker" of the Trail was Paul Hilna in 1995. Paul raised pledges for the SHTA and Wilderness Inquiry as he hiked the length of the trail with crutches due to his paralyzed lower extremities." Wow! last edited: 1/30/06 10:44:13 PM” 10:40:56 PM 1/30/06 “That's right simer. I should say "do it in September and you might have the fortune to bump into the Whiskey Trek gang."” 11:02:28 PM 1/30/06 “While I haven't through hiked the trail yet I have sectioned hiked it over the last year or so. I would recommend hiking the trail in late August to mid October. That way you get moderate temperatures (75-85 degrees) and less bugs. Not to mention the aforementioned Whiskey Trek, a definite bonus! http://www.w-trek.com/ If you're thinking of through hiking the Superior Hiking trail here are a few websites that may be helpful: Official Superior Hiking Trail Website: http://www.shta.org/index.php Trip Report from recent through hiker: http://samh.net/backpacking/sht/index.html Superior Hiking Trail Yahoo Group: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/hiker/ When I finish my through hike (Aug 26-Sept 10, 2006) I'll be shure and post a trip report.” 8:00:18 AM 1/31/06
