Short WHITE Bus

“I'm thinking of buying a bus like this one, as a project vehicle and eventual camper...I found a 1978 Thomas Built Bus for $800.00 pretty good shape for it's age...gonna use the income tax refund and buy it....

I have "converted a short bus" once for our revolutionary war reenacting group. It worked out rather well. I ended up selling it to a friend.

Removed the last three row of seats and made shelves that could support human weight so they could be used as bunk beds. Welded on a wider rear bumper to mount a generator on, added a canopy on the side for shade, and fabricated a wider front bumper with wells in it for coolers to sit in.

thing got horrible milage and was awkward at pulling our little trailer but still considered a success.

Don't plan on going anywhere in a hurry.

By now, a woman equal to my age is thankful I'm out of the house, but still close enough to yell at...LOL

I'm knee deep in it now, Got the Title applied for, Tag, Insurance, and I've done the initial assessment of required repairs...(Bought the first parts too...isolators for the sway bar).

I've pressure washed it inside and out, and degreased the engine compartment....(So I can tell how much of the bus was held together by the years of grease...LMAO).”

I bet the schoolbus will be roomier, rattle more, and have harder beds than the VW we have. Prolly go slower, carry more people and junk, get worse mileage. Might be easier to work on and get parts for, but then again, maybe not (is it diesel?). It probably will go about the same speed and maybe have better heat but prolly no a/c. You gonna put a stove and fridge in it?

Like I said, mechanical comes first...heck just cleaning out the engine compartment could take weeks....(I'm one of those peeps that think rust should be removed and the surfaces prepped and painted...)
