Hallelujah!
This little gem appeared in the opinion section of our local newspaper:

Liberals are here to save everyone
February 01. 2006

I am very tired of seeing the word "liberal" used as a term of opprobrium. Most of us are not the fuzzy-minded, knee-jerk-reacting people you think we are. Instead, we are the people who are trying to save you from yourselves. We are trying to prevent your daughters dying from illegal abortions. We are trying to prevent unwanted children from living unloved lives and turning to crime.

We want universal health coverage to prevent you from dying because you could not afford to go to doctors. We do not want you to have to share prescriptions, split pills or do without medication.

We want America to do the right thing by her people, as other developed countries do. What is so bad about this?

Thank you Captain Obvious! But I don't need saving, thanks.

People like that are only one step above the American Taliban.

I find it funny when we look at the background of some of the liberals. Take Clinton and Jessie Jackson. Clinton was raised by his mother then had an abusive stepfather and they didn’t have a lot of money. Jackson was fathered by his mother’s neighbor and never really knew his father. He grew up with a hard childhood. Yet both of these guys worked hard, made their way in the world and became very powerful men. So you’d think they would be of the mind that if they can do it so can everyone else.

I think that is a major difference between liberals and conservatives.

On another point - how many of our older citizens going through medicare hell are "liberals"?

"On another point - how many of our older citizens going through medicare hell are "liberals"?”

Exactly! It's not just the liberals who get hurt by liberal policies.

It seems to me like those two people grew up to be liberals b/c it was obvious to them that not everyone who needs help now and then is lazy. They probably realize that in order to grow up and become successful & hard-working like they were, children need the chance to grow up, period, like for example having food and medical care and stuff if their parents can't/won't provide it?

P.S. that is a really funny headline!!

opprobrium - I had to look that word up. That goes into the "learn something new every day" category for me.

I think Lyra nailed it.

BTW: The current medicare hell is courtesy of Bush and friends.

Ped the state of the medical industry in America is not what it is being painted as. There is no healthcare crisis in America. It has been picked up as a political tool to cause fear and grab power.

But this is discussion for another day...

Lets not confuse the present party system with the real need. We need less government and more individual responsibility.
Prescription Meds? Well my Aunt is 103 yrs old. Five years ago her meds were costing a bunch. At my urging my parents contacted the various companies involved...she now gets a monthly supply (after being able to show a need) the price (ZIP, ZERO, NADA)

Nigal, you are correct about the strange coincidence...after damn near 20 years of public service I can tell you the people who are hardest on the clients are the people who started with NOTHING and have worked their a$$ off to get somewhere.

Here is my plan, take the FREE MONEY program out of the hands of the Federal Government. If State A wants to be high taxes and free money, great. If the neighboring state wants to be tight with the money, great. If you don't like the system....MOVE to the State that meets your need.

just a quick ramble .....
Nigal - I saw PBS reporting the "healthcare crisis" (I don't watch PBS, but was *cough* changing the channels) ... anywho ... they were saying how bad the new system is ... and they had Hillary b*tching (it's amazing if anybody actually likes her) ... long story short ... their is a software glitch in the new system - she thought we should scrap the whole thing and start over and do it right (wasn't she assigned to that years ago ... anyways ... I digress ...) ... A SOFTWARE GLITCH. Yeah, Bush is evil. *rolls eyes*

Um...Cliffie, I have come to the inescapable conclusion that no matter who is in power they are going to piss someone off...therefore the less they are able to do to piss me off the better.

The problem with any goverment was like the problem with the old Soviet Union. I think it was best phrased by one of my officers, "They will willingly give you anything, but everything comes with an IOU that will never be marked "Paid in full".

I find it funny when we look at the background of some of the conservatives. Take Bush and Cheney. Bush was raised with a silver spoon in his mouth and didn’t have to work a day in his life. Cheney was fathered by a wild boar and has been in an undisclosed location ever since.

Yet both of these guys have $$$ coming out their yazoos, and became very powerful men due to their privleged upbringings and influence of their daddy's money.

No wonder they don't understand why if they can do it so can everyone else.

The news today for stocks is that the working man my be getting higher wages. Higher wages for workers comes right off of the bottom line of companies. Also, the perverse correlation of higher oil price translating into higher profits for companies weigh upon consumers. Will ,if oil prices approach zero and wages infinity, have no more companies to blame something else for their own inadequacies?

Ped, my experience is that many of the new elderly (early baby boomers) are often too damn lazy to investigate. Many, not all, but a good number, want stuff in two paragraphs or less.

XL - some of them, perhaps many of the neediest also have memory and comprehension issues.

I deal with public and private insurance regularly as one of my jobs in the Mental Health field. In fairness to Bush's Medicare Rx benefit - they are many public and private insurance related groups with access systems that are so complex and difficult to manouever through that only those who are not in serious need could manage to utilize them.

Ped I will agree, I have to deal with Liablity (HOME and AUTO etc) insurance firms....I agree they can drive you bananas. Of course, my other problem is family members. You know my 103 year old aunt leans heavily on my family for support....but I was raised that that is what FAMILIES do. You do not know how many elderly family members I see in the public housing system whose families only check on them when we order a transport to the hospital because they are ill. But you know when you start checking with the family, Mommy and Daddy pretty much did the same thing with their kids as the kids were growing up. They dropped the kids at day care, weekend care, grandma and grandpa's house....

Yeah, isn’t that funny, pedxing? The Gainesville Sun is about as leftist as the NYT. And considering it’s a NYT affiliate that’s not surprising.

The editors of the Sun never met a tax for which they weren’t in favor. It’s good to know someone down there can at least poke some fun at their own dysfunctional political philosophy.

So am I ha ha haha

I just loved how this article was so timely, considering I was recently pointing out the codependent nature of leftist philosophy on the Ayn Rand thread.
