we made our first trip to the monstrosity that is babies-r-us last night...they don't have kids gear but they did have some cool backpacks by Snougli(sp)...they had padded hip straps w/ pockets as well as a pretty large gear compartment...they're for kids up to 60 pounds...one was $65 and the other was $100 but i couldn't tell the difference except in the style and fabric...the $100 might have had more cargo room

For day hikes kids don't need a lot of gear. People really go over the top. My little ones carry their food and water in their school backpacks. My oldest graduated to an internal frame this last year.

It's less weight than you may think. They drink all their water in the first hour. Then they pee the rest of the trip.

Put a brick on his head. Or at least threaten to, that's fun as well.

I keep telling my son I am going to spray him with growth stunt spray. One morning he came out of his room complaining about his jeans being to short. I grabed a can of silly string and sprayed him. You should have seen the look on his face.

One of the great things about new computer technology is that it would be easy enough to make a realistic-looking label for a bottle that said "Growth Stunt Spray".

Thanks. I'm still mad at them but free shipping just might warm my cockles. I'll have to see what size my own children wear.

Great breathable packable Sierra Designs raincoats for kids...$10.95!!

Be VERY wary though! Ford had one of those for a couple years, and while it works in wind and light rain, if it rains rains (downpour), that jacket will let everything thru it.
As a backup in nice weather, it is a great buy-light and packable. But not for year round use though.

I would agree with sar on this. Even at 10 bones, doesn't look like it's worth the effort.

There's a reason why it's so cheap.

hey we are looking for a pack for simple over nighters with the Kid and I found a $30 backpack at walmart that would fit him perfect......I forgot the damn brand name now but it looked ok, looked big enough to carry a sleeping bag some clothes and food in it. Does anyone know about or have tried this pack? it is hydration pack capable has a hip belt, sternum strap and all that. Should I give it a go or keep lookin?

Spirit

I have a Camp trails Adjustable II external frame pack you can have for shipping. It is highly adjustable. as far as torso size and has a sleeping bag strap on place below the main bag. I could send you a pic if you want. We got it for our son many years ago and no one is likely to use it now that everyone is all growed up.

It was a small external frame strz. Bigger then a day pack but not as big as say something I or mike would use.
