Whats new in water filters? “I know water filters have been discussed to death on this board. I am not looking for reviews but what if any is the latest filter. I was looking at the tried and true MSR Mini Works or Katadin Hiker for my son. I just wanted to see if there was something new I had not seen.” 12:36:23 PM 2/03/06 “HIKER....sorry but it is easy, warranteed, and one of the best. If it works use it I say.” 12:41:03 PM 2/03/06 “Katadin Hiker or else chem. Simple, and it works.” 12:44:48 PM 2/03/06 “Katadyn Pro Hiker comes with a field maintenance kit for a few bucks more. I have one and it is fast, easy.........it takes longer to get out of the pack and attach the hoses than to filter 2 litres of water.” 12:47:39 PM 2/03/06 “The Hiker is a good filter, but I think my next filter will be a First Need.” 12:48:58 PM 2/03/06 “Katadyn Hiker.....don't go backpacking without it.” 12:57:18 PM 2/03/06 “I have a Pur hiker. Much better than the Katadyn. ;)” 1:02:17 PM 2/03/06 “Mines a Pur, too. Katadyn is good about providing support.” 1:09:11 PM 2/03/06 “Dunno what's new. I just (moments go...)bought a Katadyn pocket filter over at Hilton's Tent City in Boston. $179-nice price!” 1:50:27 PM 2/03/06 “Katadyn bought out Pur a couple of years ago.” 2:43:59 PM 2/03/06 “Katadyn bought out Pur a couple of years ago. Gee, I wonder which company was selling more filters?” 3:22:59 PM 2/03/06 “Katadyn bought out Pur a couple of years ago.” Ginny 3:43:59 PM 2/03/06 How come people in gear forums seem to have really low senses of humor? ;)” 4:04:54 PM 2/03/06 “does anyone know if the old PUR hiker uses the new Katadyn filter cartridges? I want to use my PUR on those lightweight trips” 5:56:40 PM 4/25/06 “does anyone know if the old PUR hiker uses the new Katadyn filter cartridges? I want to use my PUR on those trips where I have to pack light, but my cartridge is smelling funny.” 5:57:03 PM 4/25/06 “wow how did I do that?” 6:28:41 PM 4/25/06 “Geez... we heard you the first time. :-) And, I believe the answer is yes.” 6:39:34 PM 4/25/06 “Yes. I have the old PUR and a new Katadyn filter.” 6:47:07 PM 4/25/06 “Thank you VERY much!! :-D I emailed them but didn't get a reply.” 6:54:46 PM 4/25/06 “I got a good deal on the Aqua Mira...has anyone ever used this stuff? We had it in one of the schools but I found it easier to Pump my water with the old reliable Hiker.” 8:01:21 AM 10/10/06 “The Hiker is still the best pump out there for the best money as well IMHO. They have added an extra sheet of membrane that goes around the cartridge too.” 8:05:08 AM 10/10/06 “You guys might want to jump on me for this, but speaking as a person who contracted Hep A as a kid I only use the First Need filter/purifier.” 8:10:22 AM 10/10/06 “I use the First Need in potentially nasty water situations. Drawbacks; it's bulky and not the easiest to pump. But it does well, once inadverdently filtered water downstream of a rotting cow carcass in Utah, didn't have any problems. I have a lighter MSR filter that is ok, it's fast and light but clogs a lot, is easy to clean. Last trip to high country used Aqua Mira. Clear water takes 20 minutes. I was in the Uintas and I was careful where I took my water, springs or snow melt runoff. I had no problems with that either. I found it convenient and lightened the load since I didn't carry a filter.” 8:20:56 AM 10/10/06 “I've had a First Need filter before. Not too great.” 8:24:50 AM 10/10/06 “Fleet Farms has an Aqua Mira "clone" on the shelves for $7... the bottles look identical to Aqua Mira and the active ingredient is the same. I'll probably pick up a few bottles since the shelf life is so long. It's only $4 cheaper than what I usually pay so no big deal. $7 is a clearance price, not regular price. They have at TON on the shelf. Probably not much demand.” 8:31:00 AM 10/10/06 “No love for the Miniworks? I really like the idea of one less hose to mess with and a clean-able ceramic filter. They are supposed to be new and improved for easier pumping.” 8:31:24 AM 10/12/06 “i bought some of those chlorine dioxide tablets to try in place of aqua mira on some trips. it will be lighter and just as shelf stable. that said it is a lot more expensive... but for occasional weekend trips it's not that big a deal.” 9:09:30 AM 10/12/06 “I had the miniworks for a while. Seemed like it clogged after every liter of water I pumped. I also had the Sweetwater for a while. I absolutely hated it. Water came out of the handle. Not usually a big deal, but in the winter, talk about cold. I've been using the Hiker for a while now. I really like it. I only use the dirty water hose. I fill up a dirty water jug, let it settle and pump off the top. All I do is pull the mouthpiece off my water hose and hook it up so I don't have to mess with the second filter hose. I haven't gotten sick yet and it pumps fast without numbing my arm up. Milemonster used some kind of chemicals in the Smokies on the AT Deathmarch, seemed pretty simple. Put the stuff in and wait a while. On that trip I used the filter that splices into the tube on my bladder. I still use that one too, when I go on trips where it's pretty much just hiking, eating, and sleeping. Nice, fast, and easy. Kind of sucks squeezing water out when you're not drinking out of the tube, though.” 11:16:32 AM 10/12/06 “I'd really like to put together one of the gravity filters but I hesitate using one of the in line filters on a hoser because I think it'd be harder to suck water out. Anyone use one?” 11:23:47 AM 10/12/06 “My inline only got tough if it clogged up. Pretty easy to clean though. Just pull the screen out and blow the stuff off. cheech and chong style.” 11:51:36 AM 10/12/06
