I don't know what they're so worked up about. I mean, I found a lot of "graven images" of Muhammad on line...

Where's the outrage then?

Sarge
uhm. I wasn't debating you .. . or anyone.

Most of my posts have been statements of my opinion.

My opinion (this has nothing to do with sarge) is that the spectre of flag burning Muslims rioting because of a cartoon depiction of the messenger of their fictional god is ridiculous.

It reinforces my already cynical attitude towards religion and the accumulation of power.

I am readily will to admit that my opinion hardly counts on a world stage. Only on TT can I call Muslims (or Christians) idiots for believing in a higher power and rioting over cartoon depictions.

In the real world, our leaders and thier representatives must be sensitive to the cultural and religious mores of the folks with whom we are trying to make progress towards a more stable world.

I have no such obligation to you folks.

I am sorry you are confused.

pitts - I don't peek at lee's posts. I peek at Ewker's from time to time to see if he's trying to post more personal information about me and I peeked at birch's b/c it was a thread about a trip (other than that I don't peek at his) and I've been peeking a lot at pedxing's every since he posted something nice on my birthday thread and has said he will try to watch himself (sort of) and with one exception has followed through with that pretty well (so he's on probation). That's it.

Interesting to learn that the Danish paper refused some Jesus cartoons 3 years earlier because they were offensive.

of course sarge peeks. he may say that he ignores people but he's always looking to see how things relate to him. he's a narcissistic nitwit constantly seeking attention.

so what if the danish paper rejected the jesus cartoons. two wrongs don't make a right. they were right to be offended. wrong to react violently.

Remember how certain people (they know who they are) were loudly condemning Newsweek for allegedly causing riots by printing allegations of Koran abuse?

How is it that the same voices think it's just dandy that some newspapers pissed off millions by printing inflammatory cartoons? (Are they crazy? Are they trying to get us killed?)

Violin - Who thinks "it's dandy"?

I said once on trailtalk that all of those political cartoons are immature, before this controversy - and I stand by that. That doesn't excuse these idiots though.

I love hearing some piece of scum blame "insert cause"for their criminal act. We had an Arson conviction on one serious waste of skin, he stood there in front of the judge and said,"Your honor, it be dat woman who drive me crazy (verbatim)". He then went on to describe how she had kicked him out for drinking and drugging and he found out she was sueing him for damages. So he just got "crazy" and set fire to the house.

The judge thought long and hard and replied,"It is obvious that she is a major influence in your bad decisions, I was going to give you five years, but for your safety I am upping it to 25."

The man was shocked, he looked at the judge and said,"You honor, I don't think I can do 25 years."

The judge'e reply was a classic,"Do as many as you can."

I love hearing some piece of scum blame "insert American cause"for their criminal act.

Fixed it for you. Dhimms like violin simply don't understand the concept of personal responsibilty and self determination. If someone has a problem and they're not a white male American, then obviously it's someone else's fault (i.e. the white male American).

BTW - have you moved out of your parent's house yet mutt or are you not ready for all that 'self determination'?

Oh, and the wife and I are actually going to be moving in with my parents this spring. My dad's memory is pretty much shot, and my mom is overwhelmed with his care and her elderly mother's care. So, I'm going to be a "slacker son" and move in and help out with Dad for awhile, until we can figure out a better solution. Also, it'll let us have more leeway when buying another house here in a year or so.

Thanks for asking, violin!

Well now if the military is targeting the followers of Mohammed (how bout his brothers Larhammed and Curlhammed) if we can get the Mohammed followers to target Newsweek...nice easy circle.

The idea of personal
responsibility is an interesting one in this context.

if everything is always "allah's will" . . .then the mullahs can spend their time rabble rousing and condemning the satan USA rather than channeling the energy of their flock to more constructive purposes. In fact, if they were to channel their flocks energy to more economically and socially constructive tasks . ..they would very like risk losing the control over them.

By subverting their free will to the will of their mullah . ..the people's of these countries have abdicated their personal responsibility for their own destinty.

The mullah is the source of everything.

It is an effective way for the control of power, money, commerce and the exchange of ideas to once again be controlled by a narrow clerical elite.

Religion is inherently evil. Its only purpose is to subjugate the free will of an individual and to control them. It exists only to serve the power accumulation goals of its clerics. Whatever the religion, wherever it is found.

Don't misunderstand me. There are WONDERFUL religious folks. And wonderful churches, pastors, ministers and clerics. Everyday untold numbers of poor, needy people are served by religously inspired folks who look for nothing in return. Think Mother Tersea.

But at its core religion is about abdicating personal responsibility and vesting it with the Church, its clerics and god.

The "rawest" most unadultrated form of this seems to be the radical islamic sub-set of the Muslim world. (or at least that's what gets media play).

Women are subjucated, wear burkas, are educated . ..the whole mindset and culture is primitive to the point of being pre-historic.

As an aside:
I could never be a diplomat. I went to school intending to be in the foreign service. Spent a year in England. Realized how backward and primitive they were (1986). .. .and came to realize that my fluency in spanish would get me posted to a mission in Ecuador somewhere.

And that doesn't even begin to touch on my lack of subtly . ..and inability to disguise my view of folks like the ones protesting the cartoons.

I bailed. And now play on TT instead.

I can’t stand the irony!

Here I am agreeing with violin’s position (which I think merely shows a thoughtful examination of a number of issues) and I’m accused of not understanding “the concept of personal responsibilty and self determination.”? By Mutt of all people!

Mutt, fella, it’s me yer talkin’ to here.

And on the same thread we learn that lee has the same position on religion as does Ayn Rand.

So what we’ve got here:

1. Violin is criticizing the media
1. I’m agreeing with violin's view on cultural sensitivity
2. Mutt disagrees with my view
3. Lee is a closet Ayn Rand worshipper.

This is waaaaay too weird for words.

When the sacred Buddhist statues in Bamiyan, Afghanistan were destroyed, I didn't recall Buddhists around the world acting violently, burning flags of Muslim countries, or attacking embassies.

If Muslims expect the world to respect their religious beliefs and traditions, they best do the same for other religions.

Cartoon Protesters Rampage in Pakistan

By ASIF SHAHZAD, Associated Press Writer Tue Feb 14, 6:35 PM ET

LAHORE, Pakistan - Thousands rampaged through two cities Tuesday in Pakistan's worst violence against Prophet Muhammad caricatures, burning buildings housing a hotel, banks and a KFC, vandalizing a Citibank and breaking windows at a Holiday Inn and a Pizza Hut.

"Wow, are you a doctor?"

Hahahahaha. These crazy #&%!$s have more in common than our own "freedom fries" crowd than either would like to admit.

TEHRAN, Iran - Iranians love Danish pastries, but when they look for the flaky dessert at the bakery they now have to ask for "Roses of the Prophet Muhammad."

Bakeries across the capital were covering up their ads for Danish pastries Thursday after the confectioners' union ordered the name change in retaliation for caricatures of the Muslim prophet published in a Danish newspaper.

"Given the insults by Danish newspapers against the prophet, as of now the name of Danish pastries will give way to 'Rose of Muhammad' pastries," the union said in its order.

Another good comment:

Lord,

We TRUMPET our most sincere prayer;

That you will smite the Wolverine NATION severely and without mercy henceforth and from this day forward; and that your WRATH last a THOUSAND years; and include SEVERELY cold weather; and in the short periods of respite from the cold, biting insects and LOCUSTS.

We would normally be compassionate, however they have BLASPHEMED THE COACH, Paul William Bryant (1913-1983)(323-85-17). As if that were not justification enough for calling for a POX upon their house, they are a BLUE state.

WE the BAMA nation do STRONGLY beseech thee LORD, to CURSE the 101 some odd thousand AND their progeny for a hundred generations; and that the WOLVERINE running backs shall be tentative when choosing a hole; that the Wolverine fullbacks be confounded and confused; and the passes of the Wolverine quarterbacks flutter and fall harmlessly to the ground for decades upon decades.

We STRONGLY call upon YOU Lord, to CURSE the houses of the WOLVERINE nation, so that ALL of their children be born without clothes.

We ask these things with the FULL expectation our PRAYERS will be fulfilled forthwith and beginning tomorrow morning.

Lord, if you have any questions about the football part of this, go up to the BIG house and ask Coach Bryant, he will explain it to you.

AMEN

A University graduate with at least one prior careened a rented silver Jeep Grand Cherokee through the Pit about noon Friday, striking nine pedestrians and sending six to UNC Hospitals with minor injuries.

Mohammed Reza Taheriazar, 22, formerly of 3125 English Sparrow Lane in Charlotte, who graduated in 2005, is still in custody at the Department of Public Safety after turning himself in after the incident. DPS spokesman Randy Young said he will be transferred, likely to the Orange County Jail, but did not say when that would be. He was taken to Orange County Jail at 6:20 p.m.

He had a grim smirk on his face when he was escorted out.

It has to do with the specific cartoons in question and how it's ironic that the cartoons which portrayed a violent group was protested via violence. ... oh, and this guy's name is Mohammed, which normally would be a coincidence, but in this case it's no coincidence his name is Mohammed as is his god.
