...SNOW ACCUMULATIONS POSSIBLE NORTH OF THE TENNESSEE RIVER TONIGHT...

.A SURFACE LOW WILL MOVE EAST ACROSS SOUTHERN ALABAMA TONIGHT AND SPREAD A SHIELD OF PRECIPITATION NORTHWARD OVER THE TENNESSEE VALLEY. AS COLD AIR TO THE NORTH IS DRAWN INTO SOUTHERN MIDDLE TENNESSEE AND NORTHERN ALABAMA THIS EVENING...CONDITIONS WILL BECOME FAVORABLE FOR A CHANGEOVER FROM RAIN TO SNOW. THE SNOW COULD ACCUMULATE TO 1 TO 3 INCHES BY DAYBREAK SATURDAY ACROSS SOUTHERN MIDDLE TENNESSEE...AND IN THE HIGHER TERRAIN OF NORTH ALABAMA NEAR THE TENNESSEE BORDER.

431 AM CST FRI FEB 10 2006

...WINTER STORM WATCH IN EFFECT FROM THIS EVENING THROUGH LATE TONIGHT...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN HUNTSVILLE HAS ISSUED A WINTER STORM WATCH...WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM 6 PM CST THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 AM CST SATURDAY.

RAIN WILL BEGIN LATER THIS AFTERNOON ACROSS NORTHERN ALABAMA AND SOUTHERN MIDDLE TENNESSEE. AS COLD AIR IS DRAWN IN FROM THE NORTH THIS EVENING...A CHANGEOVER TO ALL SNOW IS EXPECTED.

THE BEST CHANCE OF ACCUMULATING SNOW WILL BE ACROSS SOUTHERN MIDDLE TENNESSEE...AND THE HIGHER TERRAIN OF NORTHERN ALABAMA NEAR THE TENNESSEE BORDER. BY DAYBREAK SATURDAY...SNOW ACCUMULATIONS OF 1 TO 3 INCHES ARE POSSIBLE ACROSS THAT AREA. ELSEWHERE ALONG AND NORTH OF THE TENNESSEE RIVER...SNOW ACCUMULATIONS OF UP TO ONE INCH ARE POSSIBLE.

THE SNOW ACCUMULATION WILL DEPEND MAINLY ON TEMPERATURES TONIGHT.
BASED ON THE PROJECTED PATH OF THE SURFACE LOW...THE TEMPERATURES ARE FORECAST TO DROP TO AROUND FREEZING OVERNIGHT IN THE WATCH AREA. A SHIFT IN THE TRACK OF THE LOW TO THE NORTH WOULD RESULT IN WARMER TEMPERATURES AND LESSER SNOW ACCUMULATION.

INTERESTS ACROSS THE TENNESSEE VALLEY ARE ENCOURAGED TO MONITOR THEIR WEATHER RADIO OR NEWS SOURCES FOR UPDATES ON THIS POTENTIAL SNOW EVENT.

REMEMBER...A WINTER STORM WATCH MEANS CONDITIONS ARE FAVORABLE FOR HAZARDOUS WINTER WEATHER IN AND CLOSE TO THE WATCH AREA.

Forecast is 4 inches of snow in the Valley by tomorrow night and up to 8 inches at 1800. I imagine the crest will get pounded.

We had two inches of snow in Townsend yesterday morning.

What our brethern in the north don't understand is that even the HINT of a snow in the south caused 95% of the population to go crazy.

Hell, I will be surprised if there is any bread or milk left on the shelves in Townsend by the time I get home.

WTF is it about snow that makes people crave bread and milk anyway?

You forgot the eggs.

I'm really hoping for snow. My son will be 6 in 2 weeks and has never seen snow. We're vising my folks this weekend and they live just west of Sipsey. That's sort of the break point between snow and rain on the forecast. I want to head over to Sipsey to see some icicles coming off the waterfalls but better stick close to home.

It's because people in non-snowy climates don't know how do drive in it, so the road gets a little slippery and the whole traffic net goes to hell.

We get heavy hail here in CA once in a while, and when we do, there are accidents everywhere. Like people don't understand that driving on ice can reduce your ability to control your vehicle.

I shudder to think what would happen if this area ever had a serious snowstorm followed by freezing. I wouldn't leave my house, there would be cars going everywhere. It would be like a South Park episode.

One thing many who haven't been there do not realize Atlanta is a very hilly city, actually sitting on the crest of the Appalachians, before Denver joined the major leagues, Atlanta had the highest in elevation major league baseball park. Ok, its not very high, but Atlanta is hilly with many steep sections of streets and highways, so a little snow and ice goes a long way to making travel difficult.

Most northern urban areas that get frequent and abundant snow are relatively flat.

A winter storm watch here in east Tennessee and people are in a panic. Sheesh.

What I hate about the possibility of a big snow up in GSMNP is that they will close the road up there. I won't be able to get up there and enjoy it.

Yes, we have to have roads to make the wilderness more accessible! May I suggest that if the road is closed, you pick a trail and hike up. It can be much more rewarding. Or, perhaps use the opportunity to hike one of the less traveled trails at a lower elevation that may have less snow.

BTW, one forecast that I saw predicted most of the snow to fall north of the Tennessee River. So you may be in luck. Whatever, have fun.

Two Quick Stories About Winter Weather in the Sout
1. Once in Memphis, TN around 1993 or so, the school buses picked up all the kids. Then the weatherman decided it might snow about an inche or so that day. The school buses were turned around on arrival at the school to take all the kids back home. Soon after that, the clouds cleared and the sun shone. It was a beautiful sunny day with temps around high 40's / low 50's.

2. In Feb 2003, in Greenville SC it started sleeting one Sunday afternoon. The stores soon ran out of milk and bread (not sure about the eggs). By Monday morning the entire countryside was covered with two inches of solid ice and the city was shut down for 3 days. Schools were closed for more.

Winter in the South is a major pain in the arse.

3. When I moved to CO the first week we were here and Sarah was gonna go to school the first time it snowed over the weekend - about 12 inches. She was CONVINCED that the schools would be closed and couldn't believe that I was taking her to school. Of course they had school - she was shocked as in "BUT IT SNOWED!!!!"

she's used to it now. lol

It's not doing Jack Schitt here in Townsend.

Looks like it could bust loose anytime, but so far, nothing. Too heavy of an overcast for me to see Rich Mountain. Guess I will put on my duds and head over to Cades Cove. Might get some good pics if it does decide to do anything.

FYI, y'all keep mentioning people having snow tires in the north. uh, no... most people I know just have one set of tires on year round. yup, we drive in snow with our radials... and mostly survive. ;-P
lizs

I think the point that is overlooked is that in the North they actually get SNOW.

Down here, we usually get about 6 hours of 38 degree rain before it drops to about 25 degrees and glazes over. The of course the half inch of actual "snow" we get sort gives a cammo effect to what's underneath.

I can drive on snow with no problems, but when you scrape off the thin snow layer to the ice things get ugly fast.
