Have any of the new NHL rules carried over into Olympic play? I'm just curious.

Canadians as are impolitely beating the crap out of Italy in women's hockey. 7-0 as the second period winds down. Oh, ... make that 8-0.

Yup 16 - 0 does seem a bit impolite, but point totals count toward deciding who gets 'home ice' advantage later on.

Felt bad for the Italian women's team...from what I heard, they're in the division 2 level....that's two levels down from the Canadian Women's team.

And I don't get the "home ice" advantage. What home ice....all the Elite teams would be playing in Torina, Italy.

NHL vs Olympic Hockey
I'm pretty sure the rules the the Olympic Tournament will go by are the IHF (International Hockey Federation) rules, more commonly refered to as the European-style rules.

Like the new NHL, the center line does not count for passing, so there are not two line passes. Also, I'm pretty sure IHF uses the delayed offsides, meaning offside is only whistled if you control the puck while you're offside.

However, what I think is different is that icing is immediate, meaning that it is whistled as soon as the puck illegally crosses the goal line, as opposed to the NHL, which gives the offending a chance to beat the defense to the puck to waive the icing off.

Also, the Olympic rink is 13.5 feet wider than the NHL rink and there is more space behind the goals than on NHL rinks, providing more room from rushing plays and setting up goals from behind the net.

The third thing that's different is that the NHL allows offensive players to enter the goal crease, in attempt to increase general scoring for audiences, as long as the offensive players don't directly interfere with the goaltender by their own doing (at the referee's live discretion). On an Olympic rink, the goal crease is completely off limits to offensive players and goals scored from that zone will be disallowed. The Olympic goal crease is also much bigger than the NHL's.

There's a really nice spread about this on Yahoo's Olympics Ice Hockey page.

I think this rule set up favors the Europeans over the North American players, and together with all the injury problems team Canada has been having, look for the Czech Republic team to dominate this tournament, especially with Jagr playing the way he has been for the last couple of weeks.

My prediction:
1 (Gold):Czech Republic2 (Silver):Canada3 (Bronze):Toss up -- USA? Russia? Sweden?

Thanks Hodgeman of BC....I just heard that on the tv today during the Women's Russian vs Canadian game. Also, the home ice advantage team gets to choose their jersey colours. I think the Canadian team should choose the white jersey instead of the black. I read somewhere that in the NHL...the dark coloured jersey team usually get more penalties. I guess it's a good (light colour) vs evil (dark colour) thing......

Canadian women shuts out Russian women by a score of 12 to 0.

The other thing that they mentioned , which I wasn't aware of, is that the home team gets to be last to put their stick into the face-off
