fire by friction

“ive been trying to start a fire by using the egyptian bow drill. Ive been sitting sawing away for 5 min or more at a time with a lot of smoke but no coal. Maybe its the woods im using. Pine hearth, and a poplar spindle. Does anyone out there know good woods found in the south eastern US.”

“I tried this once and it took forever. It was clearly all technique and I didn't have it! I found that you needed really good tinder. I forgot what I used but stuff I might use for tinder when I used a match wasn't good enough.”

“HPM has a variety of firestarting equipment, including the bow and hearth. When he brought ths stuff in to a scout meeting, I think it was one of the quietest meetings we had. They were all concentrating on finding their inner firebug, as we called it.


As far as the tinder issue that's very true. One of our scouts made a bunch of dryer lint type firestarters, and gave several to us. I still cringe when I think of those things, loaded with other people's body hair and who knows what.
