Interesting. we had wild rhubarb in our yard. My mom used to make pies with it when we were growing up.

Only peeps that would know how to cook rhubarb would be the damn yankees down here on the Gulf Coast anyway. ;-)

My mom probably got her recipe from her mom, who was from Missouri.

I always found it interesting how some of the most obscure thread topics can explode into 40-50 posts around here in no time flat.

What the heck is rhubarb?
Never had it, is it something like a beet?
I hate beets.”

=O

I used to eat raw rhubarb as a kid, dipped in plenty of sugar first. I don't like rhubarb.

I love beets though, especially pickled!

Asked a few of the local garden types here at work about rhubarb.
Nope, does not grow here.
No one here plants it.

what I find interesting is that I will find rhubarb still growing at some of the old home sites in Shenandoah NP - approx. 70 years after it was planted.

Yep it's a perennial.

Once, driving with my grandfather in Missouri, we passed by the farm that they had lived on after the war, when he decided to try and make a living farming. He took a long look at the barn, and said, "Yep it's still there".

"What's still there?" I asked.
"Marijuana plant by the corner of the barn. Never could kill that dadgum thing."

Lot of people seem to enjoy growing bamboo in the DC area. Some new owners think they can get rid of the stuff. Stuff is like the weed from hell. LOL!

It's really invasive too. One of those plants that shouldn't be planted in people's gardens, like purple loosestrife.

Pecan Pie is like sex. When its great, its sheer delight and when it isn't, its still better than not having any.

We have about 10lbs of PEE-cans in the trunk of our car from the tree in Kampers Grammas front yard.

Personally I'd rather have no sex than bad sex, and no pie if it's pecan pie. LOL!

Well this has been an interesting survey. If I counted right (not likely), there are 4 people who live/grew up south of the Mason-Dixon who say "pi-CAHN" and two who say "PEE-can." And the only northerner, lumberzac, says it "PEE-can." That really brings me no closer to my search for the regional patterns, so THANKS A LOT!

Is there anything other than a "puh-CAHN"?

It's "pu" as in "putt" or "duh".

Puh-CAHN.

A PEE CAN is a metalic version of a piss bottle.

When is sex "bad"??????? I faked an "O" once. That wasn't bad sex, just really boring sex. And I really like to tell the story so it's all good.

LOL!! Well thanks for weighing in there, chili.

I wasn't complaining about lack of responses, Currahee, just saying the ones I got form no pattern.

A story about boring sex? Sounds great!

My grandfather had a couple Pecan trees in his backyard in Austin.
I heard "Pecan" pronounced many different ways in my house (maybe because my parents were a Texan and a "Ohioan" living in New England) - as a homonym for a urine container, to a blue blooded "Puh-caan", to "Pih-can." I think I prefer "Pih-can" - since it doesn't sound snooty, or unsanitary.

Exsqueeze me. I grew up in Western NY and I say "puhcan".

Of course, I now also say "y'all" and "eh", sometimes in the same sentence.

Makes sense. An inability to appreciate pecan pie would likely correlate with a lack of a certain.... joie de vivre.

Rhubarb is my favorite (not to dis pecan which is right up there). I have a neighbor that has 3-4 Rhubarb bushes in his yard. I asked his wife if she harvested it for pies/baking. She was shocked and said, "Never, but take all you want."

Heaven. Needless to say I am pulling out stalks constantly and now that they are pruned they grow back with vengance.

I always keep the freezer packed with the stuff and I love the taste of Rhubarb pie in the dead of winter (reminds me of summer) still warm from the oven. Just Rhubarb... I don't often mix it with apples, strawberries...

I may just make one tonight. A little flour, salt, shorting, and sugar with the Rhubarb. What could be simpler?

Answer: Rhubarb crisp ... another fav of mine. :)

Hey! I'm from Northern Michigan and I say,

PEE- cahn Pie! Yet another variation. But when I say pecans without the word pie, I see pee-CAHNS.

We Yoopers generally put the accent on the first syllable of most any word.
