Sass and I will be driving from our place in Mich to Jay Vermont in late July of this year. We'd love to be able to meet some of you all enroute if possible. We may a few days of "flex time" for a hike or something. Anyway drop me an email or chime in... thanks and hoping this worls out...

WOOHOO!!! I am like SO in. I'd love to hike with you, or have lunch or dinner, or anything at all! I don't think Woodstock is really enroute, but I could drive up that way and meet you. I haven't been hiking anywhere near there yet (haven't been north of Burlington yet, actually!) so that would be fun. Apparently Jay Peak is a hiking area, but I know there's also a ski resort called that, so I don't know if they're the same thing...and there's always the Long Trail, goes right by there.

Cool!
Lyra, I think we'll be at the ski resort for the race.

Ohhh right, I forgot you were here for a race!

I found this on hiking at Jay Peak, sounds pretty...

Jay Peak, Jay, VT
This hike begins on Rt. 242, 9.5 miles northeast of Montgomery Center. Park in the small parking area where the Long Trail crosses Rt. 242. Just north of the highway, the Atlas Valley Shelter is located, it can accommodate up to four hikers. The Jay Loop Trail begins just north of here. Follow this trail .2 miles to Jay Camp, a frame cabin with bunk space. The Jay Loop rejoins the Long Trail 12 miles to the north. Views from the open summit of Jay Peak are among the best in the east displaying the White Mountains of New Hampshire, the Green Mountains of Vermont, Owl's Head in Quebec and the magnificent Lake Memphremagog which straddles the international border of the United States and Canada.

I would think in order to get from Mich to northern Vermont one would have to drive through my neck of the woods. I might be able to work something out.

Lyra - The Jay Peak ski area and the Jay Peak the Long Trail goes over is one and the same. You should go there for skiing and snowshoeing as it is about the only place in the Northeast that still has significant snow on the ground.

Lyra, sounds nice.

Well, there are two ways to get there....

through Cananda or through your neck of the woods. I'm not sure what the plan is yet. Birch is in charge of the details for this trip.

Oh no you DI-UNT! :-D You're just jealous b/c Sass & Birch will get to play with my monkeys and you won't.

Anyway, our lease is up at this place we're renting in the end of May, Sass, and since our neighbors in the other half of the duplex are loud as heck and Woodstock is kinda boring, we've been thinking of moving up near Burlington this summer. So who knows if you'll be driving near us, or where we will be, LOL!

Yam lives!!

I want to go to Vermont this summer.
There are great swimmin' holes in central Vermont and there is a peak in the Northeast Kingdom that I have wanted to bag since '88 when I lived there.

Gore Mountain is several miles east of Norton Pond at about 3,300 feet with a fire tower on top.

The trail to the top is about four miles and I believe it to be the highest thing in The Kingdom.

This is a pretty wild part of Vermont with lots of moose sign.

Birch and Sass: I'm most definitely hoping to meet up with you both. Are you going via Canada both ways? What routes are you taking?

As far as sections of the LT (mentioned by Lyra) The hike over Jay peak is nice, but the trips over Mansfield and Camel's hump are more spectacular. Also, I've got a 4K peak in VT. left to do - for added motivation to go meet up with y'all.

Maybe Ped missed one of the several peaks of Mansfield...(I hope he means it too!)

I've done Camel's Hump twice, once with a fat three-year-old on my shoulders!
Together we wear about an eight-foot-tall package!!
He walked himself all the way down!

Ooops I meant 100 higest peaks, not 4K peaks. Mendon peak is a Bushwack near Killington - I haven't done it. I also didn't do Equinox which has trails.

I was thinking Mendon - because I came very close to it, but passed it up (it was a lengthy Bushwack and I had hopes of finishing in the weekend when my wife would pick me up).

I'd be happy to go rumbling around Mansfield again - or more extravagently - do a hike into the Long Trail Tavern, spend a night with the hikers discount and then go Bushwack Mendon.

If all goes to plan I'll be in Vermont at the end of June or early July hiking the LT from Lincoln Gap to the Canadian border over the course of 9 to 10 days. This is going to be a very ambitious hike and I plan to do some training hikes closer to home. Hopefully I’ll be able to make a second trip to Vermont to meet everybody.

Zac, how many miles in 9-10 days??

(I'm afraid to ask!)
MarKo

About 120. Most days are going to be in the 12 to 14 mile range, but I think my cousin is trying to kill me on day 2 with a 21-miler. That day we may be able to cut shorter depending on if we want to pay to camp or stay in a shelter.

I bagged a few last July.

You're gonna love Whiteface Mountain, try that sucker on a 21 mile day!!

Quick, how far from Lincoln Gap to Smuggler's Notch??

I need that segment.
I did Devil's Gulch to Snuffler's Crotch last year.

Oh yeah, start spillin', Yammie!!

Sassafras and Birch, if you go by way of Canada you might consider a visit to Rockburn, Quebec.

Funny! Actually I think the plain white lights are extremely adorable...people really have good taste up here. The other day we stopped at a gas station that had a string of lights in the form of two hearts in their window. At a gas station! Haha, too cute.

Emailed you back, Maple!
