Unfolding Story...
This morning, NYPD cops shot and killed a woman brandishing a knife on Staten Island.

http://1010wins.com/topstories/local_story_047115930.html

So, how does Maple enter the picture???

Well, she is there now with a swarm of press and cops. The argument was over a cat. The dead lady was protecting her cat from her neighbor who, for some reason, came after them. She stabbed the lady and somehow the cat got stabbed in the eye. Poor thing :(

Anyhow, the lady answered the door with the knife and wouldn't drop it, so the cops dropped her instead. Mapes is sitting with the kitty in her van right now...

I always wonder why someone standing with a knife who won't drop it always ends up shot in the chest and killed by the cops. I could understand if she was lunging toward them, but couldn't they have shot her in the knee or something?

Put in that situation I think I would rather take the shot that is most likely to hit the target and take them down. It’s much easier to hit someone in the chest than the knee.

that may be true, but sheesh!
kill someone just cause it's "easier?"

well, I know its a minor extenuating circumstance, but the woman had already tried to kill her neighbor, but I suppose a knife wound to the throat could, in some peoples' minds, be considered a polite warning. Cops gotta do some extra paperwork and sit through an investigation of a shooting, but thats less hassle than a trial that in all likelyhood would put the woman right back into the neighborhood

If the cop felt his life was threatened, than yes. But I was not there so I can only speculate.

BTW how is it that MapleLeaf always seems to end up in the middle of such odd occurrences? Only in New York I suppose.

From the article

"Before they could respond, the suspect came out and began moving toward them while brandishing a knife with a seven-inch blade."

Quite a bit different situation than just standing in her door.

I'm very glad I don't have to make decisions like that.

actually, you're right zac - I just read the news again, and it said she was moving toward them with the knife. I originally thought she was just standing there with the knife.

A true understatement, but that's why we luv Mapes! She always comes out of it laughing with us.

Yeah, I didn't quite understand why she was shot dead. But, I wasn;t there, so I couldn't say.

Anyway, UPDATE TIME!
Mapes just called. She got the cat to the hospital. It will be all right, but will lose its eye. The media followed her to the hospital. So, the Daily News, NY Post, NY1 and a couple of others took photos and statements. So, let's see what we can post tomorrow...

When she had the flu and was out of work for four days a few weeks ago, it coincided with some days that AP was on the scene with her company. Too bad she was out. It could have been a good opportunity...

I can't say how much danger those cops were in but, aren't cops lauded for "risking their lives every day".

About 6-8 years ago there was an armed stand-off at a house next door to the middle school.
A distraught and drunk woman was holed up with a .22 weapon.
After many hours without being able to talk her down the cops stormed in and blew her away supposedly not to risk injury to themselves.
It seems that, especially in her exhausted condition, some big strong man could have rushed her with a riot shield and disarmed her without too much risk.
This course of action may have saved this woman's kid a very sad future.

My #2 son was a student at that school and was acquainted with the woman's kid.

A different article said they went toward her door and she opened it with the knife raised above her head. It also said the officer went to the hospital with chest pains.

Luckily, it also reported this:

The cat reportedly will be okay.

MarkO, perhaps a strong man could have wrestled her to the ground, but suppose she got a shot off and the round went through the window striking someone a few blocks away? maybe even your son. How would you feel about the plan to overcome her by throwing a body at her?

wow, that is quite a twist.

LOL@somehow the cat got stabbed in the eye. Poor thing :(

I laugh only because the "poor thing" portion of that statement refers to the (now) one eyed homeless cat. Wonder if the neighbor will take it in?

HYway, the neighborhood had been evacuated for hours and a .22(not a 5.56mm) was the weapon.

"...some big strong man could have rushed her with a riot shield and disarmed her without too much risk."
ME

Of course I'm speculating.

It just seems that cops are paid to risk their lives and not blow her away because they are tired of waiting.

Don't fire fighters risk their lives to save lives?
Even a stupid, drunk and whacked-out woman who is holding the cops at bay deserves a chance.
Now we have a dead mother and a kid, or kids, who's legacy in life is that "my mom was gunned down by the police".

That ought to keep mental health professionals in business.

This sort of thing is very hard on the cops who pull the trigger too.
It seems there is an elevated risk of suicide among cops who have been a part of something like that.

This thing will never be over for the people involved in it.

MarkO, we'll just have to disagree on this one. Heck, I agree thats its a cops job to put his life on the line, but their safety has nothing to do with my opinion. I don't even like cops, maybe as an individual they can be ok, but most become obnoxious jerks once they put their uniforms on and start yucking it up with the other jerk cops.

My opinion is that society as a whole is better served when people who pull guns and/or knives on cops (the people who are tasked with keeping the lawless from doing harm to the rest of us) should expect to die for the offense not given free room and board at a mental health institution.

"...should expect to die for the offense..."

What she did was not a capital offense.
According to the story she did not make a move against the cops.
If it had been my call I would have waited for her to pass out from exhaustion.

I have no sympathy for drunks with guns. And, again, I don't particularly like cops or their overblown egos, but the rest of your town was unprotected while half your police force sat outside her home.

I am doing fine. I just watched the local news NY1
evil bastards, they showed me holding the cat but not my face :( I was having a good hair day too LOL

cat is in stable condition and in the hospital. He will have his eye removed tomorrow. We are just waiting for the cops to talk to the other lady that was stabbed
to see if she stabbed the cat. if she did, she will be charged and could face up to two years in prision.
what blows my mind is that the press followed me to the animal hospital. I got out of my truck and then there were three reportes with still cameras in my face. but you all would be proud of me, i behaved. Sorry Matt I could not get a plug in for TT. next time buddy!!
It was a wild wild day. the funny thing is twignut went to work to pick up her check and it just happened to be right across from the scene. she was standing there and this guy asked her if she knew anyone that was involved. well twiggy said yes, my mother was the one that rescued the cat. next thing I know I get a call from the NY Times. LOL she gave them my cell number.
well it is a sad thing about the owner of the cat. but it sounds like she was not all there. it is a true shame to see someone lose there life over something stupid. I was just thankful that I was able to track the cat down and get him help. he would have died without medical attention.
