How do you know that your purchase/lifestyle decisions are not fueled by a corporate attack squad and someone elses are? Maybe yours aren't pushed by a corporation but they ARE influenced by what you believe---no matter where your beliefs came from. So are everybody elses. How is it that yours are "correct" and citizen X's are not?” 7:35:26 AM 5/08/08 “I think the first casualties in a population crash will come from the developed countries, where people are ill-equipped to handle survival, or even subsistence. If economies collapse, all those populations will be left unsupported, and we all know what happens when people who are not prepared show up in the wilderness and get lost or die because they are not prepared to deal with nature. It would start with looting in the cities, then murder to steal resources from other people, and quickly go downhill from there. There aren't viable farms within a hundred miles of our larger cities. Most city people have no survival skills, and certainly no farming skills. Those who do would fall victim to violence.” 7:50:50 AM 5/08/08 EVERYONE REMAIN CALM! ALL IS WELL! “ ”8:00:25 AM 5/08/08 “Geo, how do crops grow under solar panels and wind generators and freeway overpasses? Can wheat grow in Walmart parking lots and airport runways? 'All is well', wait what about the wells?” 8:07:32 AM 5/08/08 Solix “ ”8:15:15 AM 5/08/08 “Dayhiker, here's your rain forest. Hahahahahahahahha!! ”8:17:03 AM 5/08/08 “NonConformist, WTF ?? Salebored makes more sense than that last bit of your's. Maybe Dubya thinks that if he kisses that prince enough he will turn into a frog and he can geek 'im.” 8:20:07 AM 5/08/08 “I'll reform, by keeping my bag closed up so no more reality slips out.” 8:32:17 AM 5/08/08 “Dayhiker, here's your rain forest. Hahahahahahahahha!! Oh give me a home where the buffalo used to roam” 8:35:26 AM 5/08/08 “Geo, I'm thinking there may be farms within 25-30 miles of the Twin Cities, but dwindling fast. Mine is about 125 miles northeast. The decisions I make about how I manage this place have to do with the worst case scenario you describe. My electric bill is down to about $40-50 per month and I'm soon going to investigate getting some hydro out of that stream that trespasses across my land. I just started with the chicken raising and, depending on results, may slowly get some more livestock. I had one huge garden last year that did very well and will add another. I can see myself canning veggies as opposed to last years freezing. Also, can't beat canned venison. I burned wood all last winter and have enough stockpiled for next year, plus I've already done some cutting this year. There's plenty of dead and down wood on my land that I don't have to cut living trees. There's so much that can be done where I live to make myself less dependant of outside resources. Not completely independant, but significant progress.” 8:42:24 AM 5/08/08 “My plan is to band with some other desperate city dwellers and then sneak up on nimble foot after the fall, take him out and eat his chickens.” 9:00:52 AM 5/08/08 “Oh give me a home where the buffalo used to roam” dayhiker 9:35:26 AM 5/08/08 Yup, the Nevada salt flats. Yuk-yuk-yuk-yuk !!! Yo HyWay, I'll car pool witchya and we can split the high cost of fuel.” 9:09:09 AM 5/08/08 “With you two clowns together, you won't get past the first bar, lol.” 9:25:16 AM 5/08/08 “Hey Salebored, I believe your neighborhood would be a good place for those tubes full of green slime. You would have to be careful with the golf balls...............kee-rash!! Nimblefoot, I'm hurt! last edited: 5/08/08 9:35:20 AM” 9:34:40 AM 5/08/08 “MarkO and I on the way to Nimble's place ... ”10:11:21 AM 5/08/08 “The only goof balling I do is pick the things out of front yard after windy days. Most goofers 'need a weatherman to tell which way the wind sucks'. Nim probably put you two up on poster at his local bars, dress up like goofers and you'll fit rite in. last edited: 5/08/08 10:32:46 AM” 10:28:49 AM 5/08/08 “You don't play goof? Woof-woof! Swingin' little sticks at little white balls doesn't seem like a terribly manly pursuit anyway. (ducking incoming little white balls!!!)” 10:42:44 AM 5/08/08 11:42:37 AM 5/08/08 “I met some very smart folx here in Phx who are actually stockpiling in distant properties here in AZ, who are preparing for our eventual collapse. These are highly intelligent, reasonable ppl, who interestingly ain't doomsday preaching, as you might think. They talk about it like talking about this fall's rains, matter of fact no problems, just that it's gonna eventually come. They do have a sooner-rather-than-later mentality tho. Some unnerving, I'll hafta say.” 11:51:02 AM 5/08/08 “are these stockpiles left over from the Y2K scare?” 11:57:50 AM 5/08/08 “Modern business theory lives and dies on the concept of growth. Population is the motor.” 12:18:49 PM 5/08/08 “I hear there's a big chunk of land and buildings near Eldorado, TX that might be on the market soon.” 1:12:24 PM 5/08/08 “Hmmm, wasn't that some kind of bionic baby farm?” 1:42:34 PM 5/08/08 “$125+” 7:20:33 AM 5/09/08 “Salebored makes more sense than that last bit of your's. Maybe Dubya thinks that if he kisses that prince enough he will turn into a frog and he can geek 'im.” MarkO 11:20:07 AM 5/08/08 Uh-huh. Do tell. What I wrote was clear. Don't make me go pull all of your quotes to go along with mine because I don't have time, lol.” 7:24:44 AM 5/09/08 “I'm getting gas from this thread.” 7:53:13 AM 5/09/08 “Wait until President Bigmouth pisses off Venezuela and they yank our supply. Gas is gonna be $7 a gallon before the end of the summer.” 7:56:16 AM 5/09/08 “The US national average price won't even get to $4 this summer. Please come down off the ledge .... ummm, nevermind, go ahead and jump if you feel its necessary.” 8:01:21 AM 5/09/08 “Skate boards for sale or rent, new wheels for nine dollars and fifty cents.” 8:06:52 AM 5/09/08 “US average might not, but I know my area most certainly will. Hell there are a few stations that have already gone above the $4.00 mark.” 8:07:12 AM 5/09/08 “gas might go up another 25-35 cents, ranging more in areas that are currently getting gouged. To be honest, I actually think gas prices will be lower this summer. Big oil will make the political decision to take a little less and/or congress will waive the fed tax on gas this summer(either by taking the monetary loss out of big oil or by just losing the taxes outright) and many states will probably follow. Republicans want the economy to pick up so they will have a better shot at getting re-elected. I would hope they most democrats in state legislatures and congress think the same way. Of course, Obama and Clinton are both hoping that the economy crashes and Americans are plunged into bankruptcy. (pretty unamerican)” 8:15:33 AM 5/09/08 “Are you kidding Highway? It's already well about $4 a gallon in CA and climbing. I was in the ATL last week and it was $4 a gallon. But you keep living in fantasyland.” 8:16:38 AM 5/09/08 “I am talking about the national average. I paid $3.55 two days ago and didn't even go to cheaper station in front of Sams Club. Its was probably $3.50. Gas prices will peak in a month or less.” 8:20:09 AM 5/09/08 “I hope you are right but if the administration keeps running its mouth at Chavez, I doubt it. In fact, looks like it's jumped 10 cents since the last time you went to fill up Highway. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080509/ap_on_bi_ge/oil_prices;_ylt=Ajpg1jWA9_o2_8msOX2B3mGs0NUE last edited: 5/09/08 8:25:48 AM” 8:21:13 AM 5/09/08 “There are plenty of stations around here over $4/gal. My car requires premium which has been over $4 for a few weeks. But then, I haven't filled up in a few weeks. Been biking and training it everywhere.” 8:28:10 AM 5/09/08 “speaking for my wallet, I hope I am right. Speaking for the planet, I hope it doesn't come down. The only thing that will make alternative energy research a priority is the hope for financial gain in the end. That can't happen as long as we have cheap oil. A good peak oil scare while we still have plenty of oil available will do wonders for the future of alternative energy without the price gouging, political lobbying, fraud, etc that would come with a true energy crisis.” 8:28:19 AM 5/09/08 “hubcap, once again I am talking about teh national average, but if you want to talk about just your area, I say that you won't see $5 much less $7.” 8:29:53 AM 5/09/08 “$3.68 is the highest in town $3.64 is the cheapest course that was yesterday” 8:30:58 AM 5/09/08 “CA, the most populous state in the nation and the economic engine of the country, is going to see $5. No problemo.” 8:32:03 AM 5/09/08 “Hey Hyway, gotta bet for you. I will bet you something (cannot think of anything off the top of my head) that the US average will peak just over 4 bucks sometime in July. Some areas of the country will flirt with 5 bucks a gallon during this period. Big oil is going to test this and I think 4 is the magic number now. If the economy was better, it may be higher. I do agree and hope it climbs through the roof. This is the only way we will see research towards alternative sources. For now, you may just have folks moving closer to larger cities or where they work or selling off of a 2nd or 3rd car.” 8:44:03 AM 5/09/08 “The half azzed EV,HEV and PHEV facade by the big three can be justfied by 4 bucks plus falling back to $2.99 9/10 and be reaffirmation that BAU is our future as the period since 1973.” 8:44:25 AM 5/09/08 8:59:18 AM 5/09/08 “Somehow I think it will be awfully difficult to strap my canoe and kayak to the roof of that thing.” 9:03:01 AM 5/09/08 “lumber needs a strap on.” 9:08:57 AM 5/09/08 “Here is a serious question about electric vehicles. As more and more are put into use, can the current electrical grid handle the extra load? Also, what is the use life of the batteries before they no longer will hold a charge? last edited: 5/09/08 9:17:05 AM” 9:13:43 AM 5/09/08 “That Moose reminded me of the moose that stuck his head in the open back of my VW bus in 1968 Montana.” 9:14:03 AM 5/09/08 “Unless capacity increses it won't handle it. In the next decade electricity demand is expected to outstrip supply. PPL electric rates in PA. are going up 35% in the next 2 years. They said they need another grid line installed to prevent brown outs and are running into problems building it because people don't want the lines near their homes. Coal fired plants are due to be built across the U. S., but there aren't enough rail lines in place to move the coal to the plants. That means it'll have to be trucked in increasing costs. That'll raise rates even more.” 9:34:03 AM 5/09/08 “I've been told to read up on what Israel has in the works to power their on comming fleets of EVs. Even though they can move much faster toward their goals than the US, many things can be learned. Too many flavors, too little time.” 9:46:32 AM 5/09/08 “Hyway, I understand you're talking about the national average, but which nation?” 9:49:08 AM 5/09/08 Jump to Page << prev
