The car companies generally size the tank to get a 400 mile range. The size of the gas tank is usually a better indicator of the gas mileage then the epa sticker.

Oil prices hit a new record high above US$127.00 a barrel on Friday in a volatile market.

Light, sweet crude for June delivery rose as high as US$127.43 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange during the afternoon in Europe, before retreating to US$126.62, up US$2.50 on Thursday's close of US$124.12.

In London, Brent crude contracts were also higher, up US$2.59 to US$125.22 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange.

"Everything the market looks at is bullish," said a report by U.S. energy risk management firm Cameron Hanover.

Some of the factors pushing prices up included speculation that China's demand for diesel needed to fuel its power plants would rise due to reconstruction efforts after this week's earthquakes and an upward revision of its oil price forecast by investment bank Goldman Sachs, from US$107 to US$141 a barrel for the second half of the year.

Technical trading, in which traders takes into account on prices patterns and other technical data instead of relying more on fundamentals such as supply and demand, also was seen as a reason for the high prices.

"Unless there is a confluence of substantive bearish news, when there is a pullback of something like US$5, it's unlikely to stay down because enough participants will see that as a buying opportunity," said Victor Shum, an energy analyst with Purvin & Gertz in Singapore.

Thursday's expiration of options contracts and a temporary shutdown of ICE Futures trading in crude oil and other futures products due to a power outage also contributed to the previous session's volatility.

"So there was a lot of confusion yesterday, and not surprisingly, there was this wild, seesaw session," Shum said.

Options let investors bet oil prices will rise or fall in the future, and prices can fluctuate widely on days when options expire.

But oil has again consolidated near the US$125 a barrel mark, Shum noted, because the commodity is still seen as a better bet than investors' other options.

"Oil as a class has performed better this year than equities and bonds, and continues to encourage investors to pile money into oil and stay in oil," Shum said.

On Thursday, oil initially climbed in the floor session as U.S. diesel fuel prices jumped 3.6 cents at the pump to a national average of US$4.455 a gallon (US$1.178 a liter). Diesel is used to fuel most trucks, trains and ships, and is a large part of the reason prices of food and consumer goods are rising so fast.

But as oil reached for new records above US$126 a barrel, the U.S. Energy Department reported that natural gas inventories rose 93 billion cubic feet last week, more than analysts had expected, and that pulled the whole petroleum energy complex lower.

Fluctuations in the dollar have contributed as well to oil's volatility. The dollar has generally been stronger than earlier in the year, but it is waffling between 104 and 105 against the yen, while the euro seems to be range-bound between US$1.54 and US$1.55.

Investors have been viewing oil and other commodities as a hedge against inflation and a weaker dollar since the middle of last year, and that link has meant that oil has been tending to rise and fall inversely with the dollar.

In other Nymex trading, heating oil futures rose 5.15 cents to US$3.6739 a gallon (3.8 liters) while gasoline prices added 5.64 cents to US$3.222 a gallon. Natural gas futures rose 14.9 cents to US$11.548 per 1,000 cubic feet.

When people grow up and start thinking in terms of energy conservation, then we won't need anymore refineries. An example would be, get a good water filter and bottle and stop having bottled water delivered to homes and stores all over this country.
The Reason I mentioned that is a 50 foot long truck just pulled up in front of my house to deliver Arrowhead water to the house accross the street.

So much for the democrats helping out:

http://www.rockymountainnews.com/news/2008/may/15/panel-defeats-attempt-end-oil-shale-moratorium/

The Senate Appropriations Committee today narrowly defeated Sen. Wayne Allard's attempt to end a moratorium related to oil shale development in Colorado.

[...]

But in a 14-15 vote, the committee spilt strictly on party lines and rejected the amendment.

I would say yes. With dealer plates on it. Those things are everywhere these days. The state had to stop handing out ride in the HOV lane stickers because so many of them are being bought. I think those with the sticker will definitely have a much higher resale value.

That is good! We need more of these being bought instead of Hummers and large SUV's.

Every day the lot I park in to take the train downtown, people come home to find their cars broken into, everything possible stolen. The big trend here is to steal the catalitic convertor off the car or SUV. It is a bit easier to hack it off the SUV, plus the theives get more money. Monday, I walked past a woman crying, standing in front of her Nissan Armada. Missing was 2 airbags, the CC and all 5 tires. Vechicle was brand new.

I see someone under my Jeep, I run them over and over and over and over

Oh man, I agree. It's gonna take a while for those babies to trickle down in the used market, however. $25K is quite a bit for our average American to drop on a new car. But smaller cars are making inroads for sure. About freakin' time. Maybe we will get some of the cool Euro models.

Crazy! There have been a lot of CC thefts here, mostly on Toyota Tacomas. I agree. If I see a pair of legs sticking out from under my car, somebody's gonna be crippled. What's up with the airbags tho?

Shouldn't this thread be renamed "How expensive is your local gasoline"? I don't know about anyone else but we are paying 3.90 for regular unleaded 87 octane. Ny state is thinking about giving us a gas tax holiday all summer long...thats 32 cents less and combine that with the 18 cent federal break and I might actually be able to afford another gallon more a week.
