“nobody on the roads back from wisconsin this memorial day weekend. aaa said americans drove 11 billion fewer miles in march. i have never seen anything like it in 10 years of making this trip. yet gas is only 23% higher this year than last year when the roads were clogged. that trip that cost $160 in gas last year would have only cost $37 more this year. most people will blow $37 on beer, cheese, and composite tube meat at the mars cheese castle. people save $37 thinking they are responding to he problem by "changing their behavior" and skipping memorial day vacation yet get all offended when they are accused of being "part of the problem" for driving SUVs that get 20MPG or less.”

“I was convinced of $5 gas by July; however it appears to be slowing down. The recent news of less driving will have somewhat of an effect as well as a strengthing dollar.

A friend of mine who is a produce manager at a local chain supermarket was discussing what rising desiel prices are doing to produce prices. He said that they receive 4 shipments per week of fresh vegitables and fruit and have had to mark everything up 10%. He increased this to 15% this past weekend to take advantage of the holiday.

Next he will be cutting back to 3 weekly shipments, marking up 20% if and when diesel hits $5 a gallon. This may have already happened, I don't know.

If it rises higher than $5.50, cut to 2 shipments a week and up to 23% increase in price.

He just got his yearly review as well and even though his section of the market has seen a 35% increase in the past year, he was asked to take a pay cut and surrender his vacation time.

Come August, I bet this country is in a ressession.”

“I had to do a bit of a drive this morn and decided to see what my fuel economy was at 60mph. I made sure the tires were all filled (42PSI) gassed up the wagon (2006 ford focus wagon) and headed out. I drove 176.9 miles on 3.832 gals gas averaging 46.16MPG about 11 about the EPA est. No A/C , windows up (it was 60 and cloudy). Now to see what I get at 55mph.....”

Hey birch--I have been told not to put more than 40PSI in the tires, it does more harm than good (eneaven tire wear; wearing out more more quickly). I keep mine between 35 and 38.

Also been told that using A/C will have no effect on average. Use cruise control as much as possible and avoid mashing the gas pedal to the floor.

$4.00 here with a scattering of $4.15 at certain stations. I cannot fathom why you would choose a station that charges $4.15 rather than $4.00 a block away.”

“ac will knock off about the same as the loss in aerodynamics of having your windows rolled down. so you can save a little if you can take the heat and humidity but don't kid yourself if it's hot and you are rolling down the windows to keep cool. it's just as efficient to run the ac at that point.

when the speed limit was 55 i routinely drove 60. i am a "5 over" kind of speeder.

“Wow, Birch. that's pretty freakin' good! I can't get close to that in the Forester. I kept it at 70 on my last road trip. I think I will drop it to 60 mph when I head to the Bay on Thursday and see what kind of mileage I get.

“It's the AWD as soon as you have a car that spins all 4 tires you we're going to loss fuel efficiency simply because it's more work to spin 4 wheels that 2. Still mid to high 20's is better that mid to high teens that you would get from a jeep with the same size 2.5L motor.”

“Not always though, you have to watch it. Sometimes Costco doesn't lower their price as quickly as the local stations. I just got back from there and the price they have is exactly the same as the corner station right now, $3.97.

Rosey, I hear you on the ground clearance! Our county is in such dire financial circumstances the snow plowing was cut back significantly (they would plow the two middle lanes on main thoroughfares only, if they plowed, and never got to residential streets last winter). There was only one snow I couldn't get out in, but the wagon just doesn't compare to the Cherokee we traded in for it. Most of the time it did fine. It does surprisingly well on seasonal roads too if one is careful.”

From what I heard on TV, they said a big spike in prices this summer would come if a hurricane hit the Gulf and did widespread damage. In that case gas could go up a few dollars from what it is now. WK, I hadnt heard that before. It makes some sense though. I was thinking about how much easier it is to ride my bike with a more inflated tire. Speaking of tires I need new ones asap (they are on order), it was a slippery ride home from RRG last month lots of hydroplaning.”
