You are in luck. There is a chick who hangs out around here who digs American sailors stationed in Japan. I think she went out there for a hike last year. She sent her sailor a dear John so she might be available for another port call.

She has a mean streak, but she ain't too bad looking.

My beautiful young single daughter works in Hita, Kyushu Island, Japan and she did the ritual night climb to Mt. Fuji to watch the sunrise. While it was quite crowded, she said it was worth it to do it once. My wife and I may try it this June.

He who climbs Fuji is a fool; he who climbs Fuji twice is twice a fool (old Japanese proverb).

I lived in Japan for two years. May have changed a tad, since I left almost 40 years ago. Nice place, nice people.

Ain't it he who climbs Fuji is a wise man (or he who doesn't climb it is a fool), and he who climbs it twices is a fool?

Anyway I climbed it when I was 12, and then made a fool of myself for my kids (climbing it with them when they were 11 and 9).

I had a relative who flew over Japan a few times...but he never landed if you get my drift.

FYI the old "Gum, Nylons" trick is pretty much passe.

Some things I think are well worth doing:

Climbing Fuji - combine this with a trip to Hakone and the Hakone Open Air art museum. The trip can be half the fun, you can combine a variety of modes of transport to get there:

Tokyo is great, buth the ultra modern and the historic districts. I have a fixation on historic Tokyo. If you can get ahold of any of Sumiko Enbutsu's walking tour guides for the Tokyo area, you'll have fun and learn a lot.

Kyoto is a great city. US bombimg in WWII spared much of Kyoto - because of its beauty and hisotoric importance (and its lack of great strategic value).

A small less developed historic town like Hagi is great to walk, or even better ride around on a bicycle.

Stay at a Minshoku or a Ryokan.

You got to go to the Japanese War museum. All the display signs have an english translation under them. You get to find out that it was President Roosevelt who started World War Two, and that after the Japanese troops liberated Nanking, the residents lived peaceably thereafter. The Hiroshima Peace museum is also a must see. An old woman with unusual burn marks all over her face glared at me, so this is not the time to be smug about Truman's decision as you walk about seeing the destructive effects of a U.S. nuclear bomb.

Yes, 15 times. There is too much to see to attempt listing everything. Try the Fuji 5-lakes Area, Chinatown in Yokohama, Nikko, etc. And check on base: "Both the MWR and Single Sailor programs provide tremendous choices of organized tours and sightseeing trips, ranging from shopping trips in the nearby towns to week-long trips to Beijing." Naval Air Facility Atsugi Likely, they can provide you with literature for self-guided tours, too. Ask!
The way I heard it: "A wise man climbs Mt. Fuji. A fool climbs it again!"

The hiking season for Mt. Fuji is July-August. If you go up the Gotemba Trail (the Slide), you will be called "crazy!" (Baka!)

1. There is not enough Japanese food to fill up 1 American.

2. The children are polite to gaijin strangers.

3. Ever seen those pictures of them cramming people onto subway trains in Tokyo? They're not kidding.
