so who is game?
Tom Jones again? another part of the park?

The end of April would be good. I like Tom Jones, but anywhere in Harriman works for me.

No but seriously, I have to see what's going on, but Harriman is way too close to home to resist.

Keep me posted...

I'd be up for something in Harriman March or April. I'd really like to hike the AT through the Park and it'd be good to see Maple and Tree. I haven't seen you guys since that Halloween Party way back when.

ok I know I am on call at work near the first of MArch and sometime in April. I will get the dates today.

antoher thing, tree has not been out hiking since that darn pesky skeeter ate him so we need to find a place that has a back way in or at least a way for tree to gett to the campsite with out having to walk 5 miles. my baby needs baby steps to ease him back in to hiking :)

perfect hike would be to find a place that you all can hike in the long way and we can find a short cut to hike orrrrr what ever we want and wait for you all :)

It was a tick, Maple. A small, but deceptively dangerous tick. A speck. Just a little blot in the forest that carries toxins that can knock down the biggest and baddest of the unaware! A lousy little scumbag of a tick! Not the big, cutesy cartoon character we all came to love!!! NO!!! A F_CKING LITTLE TICK!!! THAT GODDAMN THING CAUSED ME MORE PAIN AND GRIEF THAN SOMETHING A HUNDRED TIMES IT"S F_CKING SIZE CAN DO!!!

Ahem, er, ah sorry! Got off on a little tangent there.

Never mind!

Hey Maple - the only dates I can go backpacking are the weekend of April 22nd. That's it. Can't do anything before, can't do anything after...until June of course. So if we could do the trip then...that would be mucho coolio! :)

Our beloved Ent has been suffering....wood rot? Jeez...hehehe...for Mapleleaf I hope that's not true! lol! I made myself laugh. hehe

Here are a few suggestions other than Tom Jones that might fit your needs. It's Harriman so the possibilities are almost endless for short or long routes. The longer routes can easily be made even longer if people so desire. What are the dates for this trip anyway?

Big Hill Shelter - There is a parking area along route 106 that is only about 1.5 miles from the shelter, but I don't know if you can park overnight there. For a longer hike there is overnight parking at Lake Skannati and it's about 3 miles to the shelter from there. You can also park at the Lake Sebago boat launch overnight and it's about 5 miles from there.

Fingerboard shelter - There is overnight parking at Tiorati Circle, which is about 1 - 1.5 miles from the shelter. There are options for longer hikes to this shelter by parking at the Elk Pen or at Route 106, which would allow you go to the Lemon Squeezer or Boston Mine.

Stockbridge shelter - Park at Silvermine Lake and it's about 1.5 miles or so to the shelter. Longer hikes could be from the Elk Pen, which would be about 6 miles to the shelter. From the parking area at Tiorati Circle it's about 2.5 miles to the shelter.

Bald Rocks shelter - You can park at the same location on route 106 as you would for the Tom Jones shelter it's about 1.5 miles from there. For longer hikes to the shelter you could park at the Elk Pen or a little further west on route 106 and make a loop up to Boston Mine and the Lemmon Squeezer and back down to the shelter.

I'm not sure how much room there is around any of these shelters for tents or the availability of boulders to lean against. Of course there are other shelters with other possibilities, but I don’t have time now.

I forgot about Fingerboard. that is where I did my first solo winter trip. It was nice and had a nice view of the lake. plus anyone that wants to hike in the long way can. plenty of parking.

I vote for Fingerboard.

Sounds wonderful Mapleleaf! Spiderloins thinks I'm crazy wanting to go backpacking so soon after our trip to the UK....but the way I see it...I've got to go bp'ing to stay sane for the rest of this semester!

I'm giving the finger for fingerboard...lol...let's do it.

Are we talking about camping in or around the shelter?

It's a nice shelter with three fire pits, but the surounding area is quite sloped I believe.

LOL, Fingerboard is nicer because all three sides are inclosed. Tom Jones has that one open side that let snow blow in when I was there last December. It also sleeps six, Tom Jones only sleeps four, and that's crowded. Probably more fire wood available also.

*PS. Yup, that's Fingerboard. It's about a hundred yards off the AT.

the good thing about the finger place is you can go down the slope to a flat area. no view but plenty of places to sleep.

wait bs, sleeps only 4?

heck I know we got at least 5 or maybe even 6 in there for the Mr. & Mrs. A leaving to CO trip
