Canon D20 SLR

“ANyone have any experience with this camera? I need a semipro model for magazine photo shoots.

“I'm assuming you mean the 20D? Hey, there's a 30D out now, but there's also an older D30 model, so you gotta be careful with numbers and letters these days!

Canon just announced a 30D model, so the 20D is so yesterday, ha! I have a 20D and love it, but it's not full-frame (1.6x crop factor), but if you're not shooting wide-angle landscapes you probably won't care. The 20D is a great camera and I would recommend it if you want to shoot digital. I still prefer film for most of my landscapes.”

“I got one of these Lt. It's a great Camera, though I'm way off being able to exploit just how good it is. I think WW and Buck have one also.

You'll either get a great deal on it or struggle to find it as there was a 30D update to the 20D released this week.

I have made crisp 16x20 prints from large jpeg files from my 20D. You should have no problem getting magazine quality images with this camera, especially if you shoot in RAW mode.”

Hi LtHiker! The crop factor should be something you're aware of. The 20D is an slr camera where you buy lenses separately. The 1.6x crop factor of this camera means that the lens you choose will be subject to a lessened field of view by a factor of 1.6x. If you buy a 17-40mm lens for this camera, it won't be the same as if you used it on your film slr camera. Instead of a 17-40mm perspective, on the 20D camera this same lens will actually give you a field of view equivalent to a 27-64mm lens. Field of view is what you actually see in your viewfinder and what the image will end up being. The 20D crops the lens, it gives you a narrower field of view. This is due to the smaller sensor size compared to a full-frame sensor or a 35mm equivalent. It sounds more complicated than it is, but it's a very basic principle that is important to know if you buy a 20D, or any non full-frame digital sensor.

The crop factor sucks for wide-angle landscape photography because it doesn't allow me to get all the stuff in the frame that I'm normally accustomed to with my film camera. It chops much of it out with my 20D, even though I'm using the same lens as on my film camera, the Elan 7.”

“Thanks guys. I get the crop thing now, I wasn't aware that it would be any diferent than a 35mm that I am used to I have the Canon 7E. Amazon actually has a great price thru Adorama camera shop with an 18 to 55mm lense. I already have a couple other canon lenses and need to get something around a 300mm zoom for distance shots.”
