Cooking QuestionView Messages“Do any of you bring hamburgers along to cook and eat? If so, is it possible to make your own patties out of regular ground beef? Or should I stick to frozen.” 8:43:34 AM 3/03/06 “I've never tried making patties out of frozen ground beef. Good luck.” 8:45:20 AM 3/03/06 “X3, technically even the frozen stuff is still ground beef. Um...are you planning on making hamburgers on the trail?” 8:45:38 AM 3/03/06 “lol @ nimblefoot..........” 8:46:22 AM 3/03/06 “I haven't taken hamberger patties on a hike, but you can make them and freeze them for home use, so I can't see why not. The only difference is that the comercially made products are stored at temps lower than your typical home freezer--until you bring them home, of course.” 8:48:07 AM 3/03/06 “I'm wondering how you make your patties, Mark What keeps the meat together? Egg?” 8:54:00 AM 3/03/06 “You can make homemade patties that require no binders. Just pat the meat into a shape you desire. Or buy a hamburger patty press, they are cheap!” 8:56:15 AM 3/03/06 “i've never brought hamburgers but i have brought frozen steaks...i think ground beef thaws a little faster than steaks though...the steaks work great...i marinate them and then freeze them in zip locks and wrap them in something like a fleece or socks(clean socks) to insulate them i use cotton socks so my steaks don't get blisters ;) last edited: 3/03/06 8:59:09 AM” 8:56:31 AM 3/03/06 “Adhesion. Or you could buy (MORE GEAR!) a pattie maker--available in many home/cooking stores. Used one of those when I worked in a cafeteria. Then it's a matter of how you package them.” 8:58:19 AM 3/03/06 “So are patties with binders any better than those without? How many eggs should I use, or do you just use the whites?” 8:59:08 AM 3/03/06 “I would go with White Socks....” 9:00:55 AM 3/03/06 “eggs in burgers??!!!...come on people, throw some meat on the fire, flip it when it gets brown...you're over thinking it, they're burgers ;)” 9:02:55 AM 3/03/06 “Carry it frozen in bulk, it will take longer to thaw. Make the patties when you get to camp. Don't forget, armpits are multiuse.” 9:05:26 AM 3/03/06 “If you're putting eggs in the burgers, you're making a meatloaf. What else do you add? I was thinking, pure, unadulterated (well maybe) ground beef/chuck.” 9:06:10 AM 3/03/06 “hmmmmmmmmmm, this ain't rocket science folks.......” 9:07:58 AM 3/03/06 “Is it possible to put in the condiments with the ground meat when you make the patties? I'm trying to figure out how not to carry coniments. Would putting onion, tomatoe, lettusce, and ketchup in with the meat work? And what's the best way to cook meat?” 9:09:07 AM 3/03/06 “bring one of these babies with ya ![]() fire blindly into the woods...it's bound to kill something...go find it, throw it on the fire...problem solved” 9:09:10 AM 3/03/06 “thrifty has the best idea yet........just don't shoot a hole in your tent.........” 9:10:51 AM 3/03/06 “I don't bring condiments on the trail unless I got lucky on the female hiker thread.” 9:11:10 AM 3/03/06 “what? like syrup, nimble, you kinky ol geezer......lol.” 9:12:00 AM 3/03/06 “Just take condiment packs with you .. sheesh! You can get anything in a singel serving size these days ;-) Including onions! And yes, form meat into size of choice and sear over fire. Eat. Yum. Don't overthink campfire grub ;-) Otherwise your buddies will wonder if you are metrosexual..lol!” 9:13:18 AM 3/03/06 “LOL@thriftyhiker. "Donner, Party of four"” 9:13:33 AM 3/03/06 “Which is exactly why you should always bring condiments on the trail...full circle at last!” 9:14:41 AM 3/03/06 “My dad always made hamburger patties and meatballs w/ egg, breadcrumbs and worcestershire sauce. Mmmm yum.” 10:22:07 AM 3/03/06 “LMAO @ nimblefoot. You are on a roll today, bro.” 10:34:14 AM 3/03/06 “If nimblefoot is on a roll, does that make nimblefoot a 'burger?” 11:26:01 AM 3/03/06 “no... he must be BUTTER cause he's on a roll” 11:45:40 AM 3/03/06 “yeah everyone knows burgers come on buns especially the brokeback ones last edited: 3/03/06 11:54:59 AM” 11:48:19 AM 3/03/06 “someone should give His buns a hinder binder” 12:03:30 PM 3/03/06 “Know what Tarpy called Brokeback Mountain like 10 times, b/c it's really what he thought it was called? Bareback Mountain. LMAO! I didn't correct him for awhile, I just laughed in my head. The thought of messing around w/raw meat when you're miles from running water and gallons of disinfectant sorta gives me the heebie jeebies. Usually after I touch raw chicken or fish at home, I feel like hosing the kitchen down w/bleach and taking 2 showers. LOL!” 12:13:26 PM 3/03/06 “i touch my meat all the time when i backpack and never worry about germs, it does make me sleepy though ;)” 12:19:57 PM 3/03/06 “Boooooo! ;-)” 12:21:36 PM 3/03/06 “Tarpy needs to be careful going around town telling people he is going to Bareback Mountain.” 12:24:30 PM 3/03/06 “I'm writing a patent right now on a "rotary meat massager" but it doesn't do hamburger patties. I'll see if I can get a prototype for thriftyhiker. We often take frozen steak, presliced into little strips, fresh peppers, onions, and potatoes, and chop them up and fry them. Yummy. Lyra, a little bottle of alcohol based hand disinfectant works pretty good. Sounds like you never eat grouse or snakes or other field food when hiking. How about diry old nasty raw fish? I hit a grouse with my truck once, stopped and threw it in the back, and had it for dinner that night. That was at a hippie barter fair, so it fit the theme of the weekend.” 12:30:07 PM 3/03/06 “I don't ever bring hamburger. I take hotdogs a lot. Put them on a stick and there is no prep work or cleanup.” 12:32:09 PM 3/03/06 Troll Alert “ If so, is it possible to make your own patties out of regular ground beef?Trolls just flock here because so many people keep feeding them! Sorry about not putting up the alert sooner, but I was at the pool hall. last edited: 3/03/06 12:49:33 PM” 12:46:06 PM 3/03/06 “........We often take frozen steak, presliced into little strips, fresh peppers, onions, and potatoes, and chop them up and fry them. Yummy........” Idaho Bob 12:30:07 PM Many years ago, I stayed at an AT shelter and this guy comes in and pulls out a light frying pan, chops up fresh peppers, onions, and starts browning them up in a litle oil. He then added beef strips. Most wonderfull 'backpacking' smell I have ever smelled! He didn't share. last edited: 3/03/06 12:50:20 PM” 12:48:47 PM 3/03/06 “Oh yeah, I remember you. You were the ugly guy that drooled a lot.” 5:17:32 PM 3/03/06 “Male or Female Troll?” 6:06:30 PM 3/03/06 What a Riot “A pleasure reading all this, you people are genuinely talented.... :-0 Mix whatever you wanna mix with the ground beef, form patties, freeze em, they thaw onna trail and are then still good for couple days. Fry em up. Bite, chew, swallow, repeat till you taste finger. Suggested mix: wooster, onion, garlic, s&p.” 11:29:40 PM 3/03/06 “Have you tried dehydrated hamburgers?” 12:16:46 AM 3/04/06 “i was contemplating dehydrated hammy's. but the dehydrated prime rib was the smarter choice, so i went with that.” 2:06:49 PM 3/04/06 “For a weekend hike, take frozen hamburger meat. Better yet, take frozen steak. For longer hikes, consider dehydrating taco meat. Then reconstitute and make tacos. Tortillas will last a while on the trail...much better than bread or buns.” 2:25:44 PM 3/04/06 “I need some cooking twine so I can truss a chicken tonight. I looked at the store with no luck. The butcher was gone so I couldn't ask for a 3' long pc. anyone know if regular twine will work?” 2:41:39 PM 4/19/06 “Any cotton string will work.” 2:45:37 PM 4/19/06 “Ah the old, "Wife is out of town, gonna have some fun with the chicken" ploy....Now do you like to wear the leathers when you are trussing the chicken? (LOL)...I have to find that Thanksgiving Turkey cooking spoof we got a few years ago.” 2:52:35 PM 4/19/06 “couldn't find any at the store? that's weird...use duck tape” 2:59:58 PM 4/19/06 “howabout dental floss? BTW, I found something really cool for backpacking------shrimp in the foil packs!!! MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM” 3:01:12 PM 4/19/06 “duck on chicken, it would have to be a big duck to tie around a chicken. Not sure my rotisserie can handle that” 3:02:45 PM 4/19/06 “If you can't find any cotton string try a strip of foil twisted up and used like a twist tie. I hear hooters has a "buy ten wings get ten wings free" special right now. =) Go out...” 3:09:58 PM 4/19/06
