I just found out my brother-in-law will be working in Nashville, TN for 4 or 5 months. I'd love to run down there and do a quick 1 or 2 nighter.

Anybody have any good suggestions on great places to go? I know GSMNP is only about 3 or 4 hours away but if there's anything closer that'd be better.

Mammoth Cave NP is a little closer, so is Savage Gulf.

bridgestone/firestone wilderness area near Sparta, Tn

good day hike is Radnor Lake if you do all the trails combined

Long Hunter has a easy overnighter..6 miles in to a primitive campsite along the lake

South Cumberland State Park has the best backpacking opportunities that are close to Nashville, with Savage Gulf and the Fiery Gizzard.

from Nashville SCRA is only 1.5-2 hours depending on where you want to hike. There are a couple of smaller parks in town such as Radnor Lake and The Percy Warner Parks, as well as Longhunter SP.

the firey gizzard is my favorite hike down there. It's linear, so you need to arrange a shuttle.

Radnor lake is full of Brentwood housewives walking their pure bred $1000 dogs. Longhunter is disgusting due to Percy Priest lake garbage runoff. Savage Gulf rules. Also, Big South Fork is an option. A little further than Savage Gulf, but 6 times more trails. Plus BSF has the Cumberland River which offers rafting and canoeing options. Plus you don't have to hide your whiskey like you do at state parks.

I dunno about Mammoth Cave. I didn't think there was much hiking around there, above ground at least. It always seemed pretty flat whenever I drove past it. Central KY tends to be pretty flat in general.

Mammoth has about 70 miles of hiking trails.

I would recommend Big SOuth Fork, Fall Creek Falls, Red River Gorge or South Cumberland Rec area.

Fall Creek Falls is ok, although very RV camper type. BTW...if you go to FCF...beware the upper loop. It has been neglected for many years and is in bad shape. The lower loop is better, with much more to see and do.
