Sticks site is primitive with just a pit toilet next to a parking lot. No extra fee to use. DNB looks to be a respectable car camping site even with showers. I think it was $14/site/day. I am all for either one. I had not considered the Koomer campground before, however that one appeals to me the most. So here's the plan. Please everyone chime in tonight with your opinion. Let's make a decision by 10 p.m. tonight so we all know where to go.” 5:29:43 PM 5/11/06 “It didn't matter to me but I hate people who say, "Whatever, I don't care.". So I flipped a quarter and it came up Koomer Ridge.” 5:36:46 PM 5/11/06 “Awe, come on now. We are backpackers! Koomer ridge!? That is car camping? could be a problem ifin the place is full. small camp! The place Sticks is talking about, you would pick up the rough trail off of ky77 after passing thru Nada tunnel, parking area is on the left. TH is across the road. hike this straight and you will be at the same camp as we have been discussing. However, there is a spot close to the road that would most likly hold this group. Lots of trees to tie up tarps. Ruby this wold be Happy creek area, where you found the morrell mushroom. Sass and abby are picking me up in the morning and we are riding down to the gorge.I will check this page in the morning and see what you all have come up with. Jer.” 5:40:52 PM 5/11/06 “"However, there is a spot close to the road that would most likly hold this group" Is this the pine stand just accross the first footbridge from the Martain's Fork TH? About 5-10 minutes from the TH? That place is pretty good for tarp slinging. I'm leaving this one to the parents though. It's a kid's hike so the parents are going to know best what their kids will be better with. last edited: 5/11/06 5:47:08 PM” 5:45:48 PM 5/11/06 “I'm always in favor of sleeping in a pine stand. You know what, I am going to be one of those people who says "I don't care, you choose". I don't know the area well enough to have an opinion that counts. I do like the idea of being closer to the cars, just in case the weather gets really nasty. 5-10 min hike vs parked right there doesn't make a difference to me.” 6:05:25 PM 5/11/06 “NOAA still has us at a 40-50% chance of rain, w/ no boomers. Low of 44° on Saturday night.” 7:03:00 PM 5/11/06 “Okay. It's 10 p.m. for everyone except my time zone, but I'm making the call. We are going to Happy Creek (my name -- not on any map). It is about a half mile hike in. To get there, go into RRG via the Nada Tunnel. (If you don't know where Nada Tunnel is, ask at the gas station in Slade when you stop to buy your permit). Park in the parking lot that you will come to on your left. I think it's .5 - 1 mile past the tunnel. The TH is on the other side of the road from the parking lot about 50 yards back toward the tunnel. Y'all got that?????????????? The campsite is as Jerbear described. Full of pines, lots of places for us to tie up our tarps. It is right next to what I call Happy Creek. It is close enough that if you want to make two trips in you can (perhaps you want to bring heavier chairs to sit on). Get there when you get there on Friday. Don't forget...pizza at Miquel's on Saturday!!!!!!!” 8:27:50 PM 5/11/06 “I think that's where I camped last time on the trip Crash organized. The site should be plenty big and there was a portajohn in the parking lot. The trail to the camp site follows the creek -- pretty easy to find. See you there!” 8:58:49 PM 5/11/06 “Cool, Stomper. I was hoping you would see the changes that have happened. See you all tomorrow night!” 9:50:45 PM 5/11/06 “Sounds great! See you all tomorrow. My pack looks like it's about to pop. =)” 10:01:41 PM 5/11/06 “My pack looks like it's about to pop. =) So does your ass! =) Just kidding! Recycling an old joke. You kids have fun. Luv ya. Drive safe and stay dry!” 10:14:42 PM 5/11/06 “I do believe that is the Martins Fork/Rough Trail. I have decided to bail because of the car situation. Too many loose ends for me to leave today.” 2:55:22 AM 5/12/06 “UGH! Worked all day in the rain, yesterday. NOW I have aches and sore throat. I am not doing well and will need to bow out of this one. Have fun. I will call sass and explain. Jer” 3:20:31 AM 5/12/06 “Sorry to hear it Jer. Feel better.” 5:07:17 AM 5/12/06 “I'm out.” 6:16:54 AM 5/12/06 “What???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? You all are wussing out on me. Sass, I know you have probably already left, but I will be calling you soon. To those of you who might still read this today before you leave, I am coming, but a work issue is forcing me to stay put a little longer this morning than I had planned. I will probably be getting into RRG quite late tonight. But we will be there. If you are already asleep when we get in, we will see you bright and early in the morning.” 9:01:06 AM 5/12/06 “If anybody is left that hasn't left yet, I'll be in tomorrow morning. I just got in from work and don't want to run around like a chicken with my head cut off getting ready and then setting up at night. Jer, quit faking it. I'll put the extra seat in my car for ya!” 5:57:32 PM 5/12/06 << back to Mother's Day Weekend Kids' Trip III page
