No, actually, Violin, my background of having been raised in a very impoverished area provided me with the motivation to learn / appreciate that, if one really wants to, one can work harder & rise above any obstacle put in their way!

Many of of my High School classmates are, unfortuanately, now either dead or in prison... because of their inability to see beyond their immediate environment / circumstance. It's very easy to look around and set your sights low & complain about all that you don't have... BUT... what my background showed me was that it's also very possible to set your sights high, work a little harder, not let yourself be influenced by the negative thinkers around you, and accomplish whatever goals you may want!

I sincerely feel sorry for you... you obviously don't get that attitude determines who / what you become!

Well, at least I didn't trash your parents for raising you to become the pitiful thing you are... as you just did to me.

First, it's not necessarily a "bad" thing to have a "chip on your shoulder"! What the below definition / history clearly shows, is that someone with a "chip on their shoulder" is someone who strongly believes in something & therefore challenges their opponent to disprove it!

So... VileMan.. On page three it says: “When two churlish boys were determined to fight, a chip would be placed on the shoulder of one, and the other demanded to knock it off at his peril”. It seems to have been a challenge in the same spirit as a medieval knight throwing down his gauntlet. If your opponent picked up the glove, or knocked the chip of wood off your shoulder, the challenge was accepted and the fight was on. Later it came to suggest somebody who shows a belligerent attitude, acting as though he were spoiling for a fight; the chip was figurative, but the idea was the same.

Many parts of PA are a cesspool. PA used to be a thriving state, but many of the trades (steel) that used to thrive here have all but evaporated leaving a mess for the people that live there. Anybody who has lived in PA knows that is how it is - just a fact of life.
