Hey Violin, New Jersey sucks!!!

I feel so sorry for you, man.

You could be living in the paradise that is Baltimore.

IMHO:

1) I don't see any justification for theb White Trash comment. I say this without pretending to be able to keep score of the long history of back and forth between Wanderer and Violin, or trying to assess the thread in question as a whole.

2) Sarge's statement about diversity looks worse in context, no need to cut and paste the whole thing - Sarge gave the link, but I note the previous line:

the place is a real dive

much of the diversity is hispanics”

Personally, I'm not offended by Wanderer's remarks - of course, I never lived in PA. I do have to take issue, as a matter of fact with one claim he makes:

I was simply stating facts....
Why in the world is my (factual) opinion about most of PA being a cesspool condescending to the poor, unfortunate residents?

If you like it there, good for you!”
wanderer

I'll add that saying much of PA is a cesspool is not a statement of fact, it is an evaluative metaphor. There is emotive value, but almost no informational value in it.

From an online dictionary:

cesspool
A noun
1 cesspool, cesspit, sink, sump

a covered cistern; waste water and sewage flow into it

Well, it just ain't nice and it offended a lot of nice people.

Maybe our friend in California was having a rough week.

I suppose being a high-achieving business owner can put stress on a person, even a superman who made himself and came up from a poor background and can't understand why eveyone else can't be like him and stop being a drag on society.

But it sure brought out the hounds and the entertainment value of this thread is priceless.

Balti, more?
For em this place bashing banter is good fun - and if you disagree you can bash back or praise. Trash talking is part of the ethos at TT.

Beat-up little seagull
On a marble stair
Tryin' to find the ocean
Lookin' everywhere

Hard times in the city
In a hard town by the sea
Ain't nowhere to run to
There ain't nothin' here for free

Hooker on the corner
Waitin' for a train
Drunk lyin' on the sidewalk
Sleepin' in the rain

And they hide their faces
And they hide their eyes
'Cause the city's dyin'
And they don't know why

Oh Baltimore
Man it's hard just to live
Oh, Baltimore
Man, it's hard just to life, just to live

Get my sister Sandy
And my little brother Ray
Buy a big old wagon
To haul us all away

Live out in the country
Where the mountain's high
Never comin' back here
'Til the day I die

Oh, Baltimore
Man, it's hard just to live
Oh, Baltimore
Man, it's hard just to live, just to live

Concession to reality: I really enjoyed Baltimore when I visited. My wife was really impressed. The inner harbor had some great areas and Camden Yards was a fine baseball stadium.

2) Sarge's statement about diversity looks worse in context, no need to cut and paste the whole thing - Sarge gave the link, but I note the previous line: - pedxing

pedxing - It is important to quote the whole thing.

“those bottom 2 are b/c it's so freaking crowded on the roads

for what? ... nada - malls and restaurants

the place is a real dive

much of the diversity is hispanics”

The 1st three sentences go together, not the last two. The last statement was a clarification on something somebody mentioned previously (read the thread). It didn't occur to me to associate "real dive" with "hispanics". The two are unrelated, and if you read the context of the discussion, it's obvious ... unless of course the person reading it is racist themselves. Don't go there trying to pin me as a racist pedxing. That's not at all cool.

OK... since things are quiet on TT and at work... I'm still thinking:

"You're state is a cesspool"

vs

"You come from white trash"

Is one of these really light years more offensive than the other?

I'm thinking that neither of them are called for. I think the "white trash" comment is a bit worse - talkin about someones Momma (and Poppa) is closer to home that talking about someone's state (though this site won't let you post some words for some of the things most commonly found in cesspools).

Still its pretty funny that Wanderer calls someone's State a cesspool and stands by that as "factual," yet starts a whole thread to complain an holler and demand an apology for the outrage of the white trash comment. Sure Violin went pretty low, but he didn't win the limbo contest on that thread by a very big margain. Wandy almost beat him. Sure the cesspool comment was funnier, but standing by it as "factual" kind of undoes the humor of it.

Well Sarge - only you know why you wanted to point that out or what you meant by it. I commented on how it "looked" in context - that's all I know - the appearance of it.
pedxing

Then take the "whole" context next time. Again, I think one would only read that as racist if they were racist or fascinated about racism. If you have any doubt, you certainly have no business pushing the hateful thought that I might be racist. I take great offense to that.

Look at it this way pedxing - being "hispanic" has nothing to do with the first 3 sentences, yet the first 3 do have to do with each other. Allentown used to be a steel area, but now it's not. There is nothing there but malls and restaurants - yet it's very crowded. Think about what that means ... not a lot of great money-making going on, yet overcrowded streets -- It's a dive. How that relates to being hispanic, I have no idea. In fact, the Hispanics came later, after the fall of the area (Bethlehem). Anybody who fathoms relating those two concepts are likely racist themself.

The Hispanic statistic was added as an afterthought. The highest concentration of Hispanics in PA are in Allentown, and it's common knowledge. I had hispanic friends. It's bone-chilling to think that mentioning the word people automatically assume you're racist.

Bone-chilling. Blood-boiling. Take your pick.

Bone-Chilling???
Relax Sarge!!
Everyone else really is wrong.

Holyoke, Massachusetts had a lot of hispanics when I was there in '87......Manchester, New Hampshire too.
That seemed odd considering the climate.

100 years ago it was Quebec French who moved in en masse(ha ha, that's French!) to towns like Holyoke.
Massachusetts has the highest percentage of people with French names of the northern New England states.

In the '20s poor hungry Quebec French were brought in to Barre, Vermont to "scab" the union strikers in the granite sheds.

'Round and 'round we go......

Yes MarkO, it's bone-chilling to think that we are so far away from Martin Luther King's message of equality, given almost 40 years ago, that the very MENTION of race invokes thoughts of racism. I find that bone-chilling.

DANG....work a shift at the station, come back home and find THIS???? Hey I had a fight just like this last night. I had brought home made Roast Beef, I walked in to Dispatch to check on something come back and the Engineer on the Ladder Truck is arguing with the Engineer on the Engine about whether lemon pepper or garlic pepper tastes better.
I finally had to threaten them with putting a report in their records that says "Does not participated positivly in work and play time with others."
Hey in the battle between NJ and Baltimore etc, can I add Augusta Ga. NOTE in the past 10 years all MAJOR disasters (hurricanes, etc) have made a detour around this area. I mean come on....if a disaster goes out of its way to avoid you,,,,

You're young here, so FYI and anyone else's who doesn't know me, I never was an avid backpacker, but climbing overlaps it to a great extent. No, I always avoided the trail rats and their social-club elitism. Let them stick to their groomed little foot-paths and their gear-toys. The real outdoorsmen are left with all the rest of the wilderness in which to play.

But you're right on one thing - I've GOT to get back into it, man!!! I have Big Plans this spring/summer/fall. I've already ordered a new harness and rope and biners and screwlinks to replace my ruined gear!

Personally I find that to be overly politically correct should be as insulting as calling someone a racial slur. I never really thought about it until I read Larry Elder’s book and the chapter about condescending white people who do not confront people for ill behavior because they are of another race. It’s just as bad because you are setting a different standard. It’s like you are saying we don’t expect as much from people of other races.

The same goes for a whole community. If a neighborhood becomes dominated by one ethnic group over a short period of time and the neighborhood goes to crap then we should simply state as much. Take Dearborn Michigan. It has become the largest Arab community in America. Should we ignore any and all effects this has on the community? We wouldn’t want to offend anyone would we?

I live in Kaleeeefornia. If I had a nickel for every time people tell me this place is filled with fruits and nuts and whacked out freaks, I'd be a treeeeellionaire. Does it bother me? Naw. Does it offend me? Not even in the slightest. I back wanderer 100% on this one. I don't know why if someone says something about another state that anyone could take it "personally" and be offended? Oh well! I'm just glad I live in a state where people know how to freakin' vote, unlike FLORIDUH! But lest Floridians feel offended, I'll make sure I offend everyone equally. Here goes:

Alabama: Yes, We Have Electricity

Alaska: 11,623 Eskimos Can't Be Wrong!

Arizona: But It's A Dry Heat

Arkansas: Literacy Ain't Everything

California: By 30, Our Women Have More Plastic Than Your Honda

Colorado: If You Don't Ski, Don't Bother

Connecticut: Like Massachusetts, Only The Kennedys Don't Own It Yet

Delaware: We Really Do Like The Chemicals In Our Water

Florida: Ask Us About Our Grandkids

Georgia: We Put The "Fun" In Fundamentalist Extremism

Hawaii: Haka Tiki Mou Sha'ami Leeki Toru (Death To Mainland Scum, But Leave Your Money)

Idaho: More Than Just Potatoes. Well Okay, Not Really, But The Potatoes Sure Are Real Good

Illinois: Please Don't Pronounce the "S"

Indiana: 2 Billion Years Tidal Wave Free

Iowa: We Do Amazing Things With Corn

Kansas: First Of The Rectangle States

Kentucky: Five Million People; Fifteen Last Names

Louisiana: We're Not ALL Drunk Cajun Wackos, But That's Our Tourism Campaign

Maine: We're Really Cold, But We Have Cheap Lobster

Maryland: If You Can Dream It, We Can Tax It

Massachusetts: Our Taxes Are Lower Than Sweden's (For Most Tax Brackets)

Michigan: First Line Of Defense From The Canadians

Minnesota: 10,000 Lakes And 10,000,000,000,000 Mosquitoes

Mississippi: Come And Feel Better About Your Own State

Missouri: Your Federal Flood Relief Tax Dollars At Work

Montana: Land Of The Big Sky, The Unabomber, Right-Wing Crazies, And Very Little Else

Nebraska: Ask About Our State Motto Contest

Nebraska: Land of Two Seasons - Winter and Construction

Nevada: Whores and Poker!

New Hampshire: Go Away And Leave Us Alone

New Jersey: You Want A ##$%##! Motto? I Got Yer ##$%##! Motto Right Here!

New Mexico: Lizards Make Excellent Pets

New York: You Have The Right To Remain Silent, You Have The Right To An Attorney

North Carolina: Tobacco Is A Vegetable

North Dakota: We Really Are One Of The 50 States!

Ohio: At Least We're Not Michigan
