I'm so glad to be in the presence of such TT greatness. I can actually feel myself improving.

I'm pretty fond of TT and TT'ers, even the ones I argue with. There are a lot of people with good hearts here and I'm grateful for them.

I personally think TTers overestimate their greatness. I am serious.

I talk a lot to people who I disagree with in the real world, and have never experienced the name calling and finger pointing (accusations of being a racist, a homophobe, a male chauvinist) that I experience on here everyday.

But LOLing each other and saying "I'm sending good thoughts your way" isn't a mark of civility, kindness, and certainly not greatness. Sending each other things when others are in need ... yeah, that's a good thing ... but what about when people aren't in need. I just don't see a lot of civility at those times.

Times shouldn't have to get horrible for people to be nice to one another, and the style over substance LOLing is not a substitute for real kindness.

That said, there are some great people on here too. But overall, I wouldn't put the group as a whole on that high of a pedestal.

The group hikes are fun, if you like to drink.
Watch your back, though.

"Smiling faces sometimes pretend to be your friend
Smiling faces show no traces of the evil that lurks within
Smiling faces, smiling faces sometimes
They don't tell the truth uh
Smiling faces, smiling faces
Tell lies and I got proof

The truth is in the eyes
Cause the eyes don't lie, amen
Remember a smile is just
A frown turned upside down
My friend let me tell you
Smiling faces, smiling faces sometimes
They don't tell the truth, uh
Smiling faces, smiling faces
Tell lies and I got proof
Beware, beware of the handshake
That hides the snake
I'm telling you beware
Beware of the pat on the back
It just might hold you back
Jealousy (jealousy)
Misery (misery)
Envy

I tell you, you can't see behind smiling faces
Smiling faces sometimes they don't tell the truth
Smiling faces, smiling faces
Tell lies and I got proof

Smiling faces, smiling faces sometimes
They don't tell the truth
Smiling faces, smiling faces
Tell lies and I got proof
(Smiling faces, smiling faces sometimes)
(Smiling faces, smiling faces sometimes)
I'm telling you beware, beware of the handshake
That hides the snake
Listen to me now, beware
Beware of that pat on the back
It just might hold you back
Smiling faces, smiling faces sometimes
They don't tell the truth
Smiling faces, smiling faces
Tell lies and I got proof

Your enemy won't do you no harm
Cause you'll know where he's coming from
Don't let the handshake and the smile fool ya
Take my advice I'm only try' to school ya"

“The group hikes are fun, if you like to drink."

I'll take a few beers around a fire when/where it's appropriate over stopping every three miles and smoking a joint.

I prefer being nice and sober on the trail while hiking. I can’t really explain it but it is this strong sense of responsibility I feel towards my hiking partners to be safe while sharing in their hike. I’m just uncomfortable putting other’s safety and leisure time at risk for the sake of my own vices.

I love it
talk about classic TT.

Within the first dozen posts I thread intended to celebrate those who post on TT turns into a classic carping session.

Pretty much says it all.

It ain't classic TT without boob talk. But beer talk usually leads to boob talk. Give it time.

I vote Nigal as Mr. Responsible Hiker. Do you mind if I use these words for a teamwork motivational poster I'm working on?

I don't drink and I have had a blast on the one hike I went on with the crowd. I find the group to be the typical "hiker/backpacker" I can be with people I have little in common with but in the backwoods I find we all look after each other.
(snif snif) I remember sitting there getting ready to slash my wrists in anger...Nigal walked over and calmly explained "You are too emotional, and...um you are cutting the wrong direction."
Gee Nigal, I am so proud of you.

Beer, and alcohol in general, is too heavy for backpacking and it doesn't compress well. I stick with meth and crack. The extra weight I save allows me to bring a tongue-piercing kit, which is usually a hit with the ladies.
