Actress Pamela Anderson has written to KFC New Zealand complaining about the way chickens are used by the restaurant chain, as part of an international campaign to raise awareness of treatment of poultry.


The former Baywatch star sent a letter to the chief of New Zealand operations, Victoria Salmon, complaining about the farming and slaughtering practices of the company's suppliers in Auckland.

"At a broiler farm in West Auckland that was known to be supplying KFC, Auckland Animal Action investigators found live hens in cages with dead ones, whose bodies had been left to rot," she wrote.

Anderson protested against the mechanised slaughtering process - which she said makes chickens suffer needlessly through electric shock and scalding water - but also farms' selective breeding for birds that have the large breasts consumers love.

"I'm sure you agree that animals should not be abused - whether they're cats or dogs or chickens - and that stopping this abuse should be your number one priority, for the sake of both the birds and your customers."

Anderson also had concerns that KFC's factory practices could aid the spread of bird flu.

"In light of current concerns over avian flu, it is up to corporations such as KFC to recognise the part they play in creating such crises. Experts the world over have pointed to factory-farming practices as one of the causes of avian flu."

She has also narrated a graphic video showing farming and slaughtering practices worldwide, in which Anderson says KFC's "secret ingredient is cruelty".

A copy of the video was also sent to Ms Salmon.

KFC would not confirm whether Ms Salmon had received the letter and video and had no comment to make.

Anderson has written similar letters to KFC operations around the world as part of her work with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).

Anderson, a staunch animal rights activist, has also tried to have the bust of Colonel Harland Sanders - founder of KFC - removed from the Kentucky state Capitol.

Good undergarments and expensive clothes can make anyone look good. It's when those clothes come off that it counts. If certain things are naturally occuring because of wear and tear, I would never put a woman down for that (aging/having kids), but if you do it to yourself through surgery.....”
