Canoe Question
Is there a formula for figuring out how far you can canoe in a hour? I have to take some scouts on a canoe trip this spring and I am trying to figure out how far we can go per day. Last fall we did a 4 hr trip that took 6 hrs because the can't go straight. They zig zaged back and forth like they were being hunted by submarines.

Took a church youth group years back. Some were doing Financial Paddling. I'm surprised some of them came back out of the Boundary Waters alive.

But then when my wife and I canoe, I have to sit in the back. If she sits in the back the Financial paddling increases substantially!

It's the Des Moines river in South East Iowa from probably Selma to Keosouqua. It runs from North to South and the wind is usually out of the West. Last year at the time we would go this year the river ran 16,800 to 17,300 CFS. I am just looking for a rule of thumb like 2 mph Etc.

On flat water I figure 2 to 3 mph....just a conservative estimate from paddling with a GPS. I would not have them straight paddling more that an hour at a time....(good breaks) just like hiking make it fun.

We (experienced adults)average 20 miles a day with portages. Don't think I'd make a marathon out of it for kids. Make it fun with plenty of "stop & see the roses".

I'd call a local livery. Most of the time they can tell you how long it'll take inexperienced paddlers to go so far. They tend to be very helpful.
