“Sabar, try e-bay. You can look for hiker figuines to use, hiker ornaments, etc. Don't have to specifically be a "cake topper" to use on a cake!

I'm looking for a motorcycle cake topper, so e-bay has been my friend. :)”

“My wife and I did our wedding almost a year ago on the cheap by most standards. We splurged on the location...Grand Ledge Opera House in Grand Ledge, MI. We found a great deal on a caterer...we paid something like $10/plate with real dishes and all that. The food wasn't incredible, but it was worth what we paid for it. It filled everyone up. We went with a buffet-style setup, so we didn't have to pay as much for staffing. No alcohol...that stuff's too expensive. The party flopped as a result, but that's okay by me. We had a great florist with great prices.

Our 'cake topper' was a sprig of some flower or another swiped from one of the bridesmaid's bouquets.”

“We had a climbing-themed topper made by www.mycaketopper.com. They made it from a photo, and did an excellent job. WARNING--order it way in advance, we ordered it at least a month before. They promised delivery in two weeks but did not deliver when promised despite my frantic phone calls. It arrived the Monday after our Saturday wedding.
Even so, a nice keepsake.

our wedding was actually very inexpensive. We had it at a picnic shelter ($100) catering (including the cake) was $800, we bought flowers at the local grocery store (maybe $25), and our wedding clothes were hiking pants and Grand Canyon Phantom Ranch T-shirts ($0). I agree $100 is a lot for a topper, but for us it was something very special.”

“Let's see..what was I quoted this week? $2-3 per serving for the cake (and that was for a non-boutique cake!)
So yeah, it can get pricey fast if you are not careful.
We are most likely doing it at the park where we live or in our backyard (so cheap), no catering, and if I don't make the cake, maybe $150 for the cake.
I am seriously hoping to come in under 1K ;-)
Helps that I am not wearing a wedding gown, and he doesn't want to wear a tux. We arealso not doing much for flowers (I like my flowers alive...) if I have a bouquet I may do one of herbs....we are also not doing a wedding party, so no 5 bridesmaids ;-)

“You might just pull off your cost goal. My wedding came in somewhere in the vicinity of 5k (we're afraid to add it all up for an official total), and we had a wedding party, catering, ceremony & party in the same facility, flowers, cake. I did the music (mp3 collection on a laptop plugged into the audio system) and had a cousin of mine push the buttons. My dad took the pictures (and did a DAMN fine job for free, I might add), and a composer friend of mine played a piece of his own creation on the piano. The video was a major flop, though...the guy behind the camera was a fool. But, we didn't pay for that, either.

The ceremony was hoped to be outside. April wedding in MI...temps were in the 60's the week before the wedding, and we got 3 inches of snow DURING the wedding. Thankfully we had an alternate indoor site set up.

There were some goofs, too. Mel's father got the wrong color vest for his tux. The florist didn't bring all of the flower petals we paid for. In the end, all that was no big deal. Everything that mattered went well.”

“Birch and I will be married ten years July 6 of this year. We had a noon wedding with a full bar, and a buffet that I would have really enjoyed if I wasn't the bride and felt free to actually eat. If I had been paying for it and felt that I had the choice, (it was my mom's dream wedding and paid for by my folks mainly), I would have had a pig roast with a keg and wine and a great band, outside. I would have been married in a sun dress. I don't even remember much of our wedding. It was all a blur. I know it involved a fancy dress and a golf club, lol.

“sarbar- we had our wedding (june 25th 2005) at lake sammamish st. pk., it was $250 for the whole day. our caterer was awsome, $7 a plate with bbq for food. flank stake, hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken, corn, potato salad, baked beans, ect. one pony keg, home brew, and soda pop. we fed 200+ people and still had left overs. e-mail me if you want his name and info.

all in all our wedding cost about 2K, not including 24 day honeymoon in florida and the bahamas. if your only doin' it once, might as well do it right!”

“If you need wedding Ideas, I've been to over 40 weddings and been in several weddings as well...

I've seen the gamut from the less than $100 cheese whiz on crackers reception in a no air-conditioned hall on a 105 degree day, to the 3000 person wedding at the Lansing Civic Center, to a petit four reception in a church basement, to ones in a restaurant...

My own wedding had 350 people--my parents paid for it-- (and about 150 of the 300 people were just our relatives)... However, we tried to minimize costs whenever possible--my mom & friends made the flower arrangements, my cake was made by a sister-in-law who is an awesome cake chef (a hobby of hers vs. a profession although the cake she made me was tastier and prettier than most wedding cakes.)

Photographer was a family friend... (In hindsight, I think I would have hired someone more professional, but most of the photos were very nice.)

I printed my own invitations (custom-designed, and about 1/2 the cost of the professional "cookie-cutter" invitations)...

etc...

I could go on and on...

Anyways, in regards to the cake topper, because I'm Asian American and my hubby's white, I just couldn't stand what was available on the market...

Instead, we found a beautiful little music box at the (now-defunct) San Francisco Music Box company... It was of 2 little mice sitting on a leaf "boat"... I take it out every year and wind it up so that the music box doesn't go bad... :-) I liked it far better than the ugly cake-toppers that are traditionally on the market--plus, it's more special and something that we can take out and relive our wedding memories with...

If you need ideas on centerpieces and such, let me know... I have had to coordinate banquets for hundreds of people, where we had a $50-100 budget for "decorations" (if that), so I can give you all sorts of cheap ways of doing things to make the wedding special, without putting you into bankruptcy!!”

My thoughts on cake...personally, I love looking at an interesting and beautiful cake. However, I could care less if I eat it. Some people decorate their "pseudo" cake (just using boxes or something), then serve something simple as a sweet dessert, like maybe cream puffs. Seriously, I bet not many people care. I can't tell you how many times I have seen tables full of untouched cake slices that end up in the garbage. It seems like such a waste.”

350 for invitations and this isn't including the cost of the string quartet and videographer (which her parents are paying for)

My ring..my engagemnt ring is a simple white gold with a medium rock band. My wedding band matches it. Not pricey at all...I am a female that doesn't need bling.
We are most likely either doing another remodel job on the house, or going backpacking for our honeymoon. So that'll be cheap ;-)

Last night we decided we are doing the wedding at a local lake, family only (free), our minister is free (friend) and we are throwing a reception at our house afterwards..and we are going to do a massive BBQ. The BBQ is going to the priciest part - and we'll just do a major Sam's Club run two days before.
Should be a hoot.
I am buying the material for my dress tommorow..and hope to have it sewed in a couple weeks.

You should dump the DJ and just run the music thru a laptop...that's what we do at all of our getogethers...saves a ton, and the music is better ;-)

“Our cake is just over $300 for 200 people. We're getting a small 3-tier cake for "show and cutting" and will have a large sheetcake in the back. MUCH cheaper that way! Plus, we're just going with a local bakery, and not one of those crazy expensive cake shops.

I've heard Costco cakes are really, really good and cheap! Lots of brides I chat with are doing those. Check your local grocery store too, they'll often do wedding cakes at a much cheaper cost!”

Ya know...Places like Safeway actually make very nice cakes for good prices. Costco cake is good stuff.

Me though...I found where to get a Cupcake Tree...woo-hoo! Now I can have my massive tree-o-cupcakes. I am thinking of doing various flavors:
chocolate zuchini
carrot cake
french vanilla
another chocolate
etc...and make them all dolled up...on the big ol cupcake tree ;-)

Yeah, I suppose I'd be spending more if I had some donations ;-) I nod politely to my FMIL on all "suggestions" and ignore. My opinion is I will take into consideration, but it is MY decision. Heck, it is MY tax refund this year that is paying for our wedding...so I am being ultra frugal ;-) If they decide to help us out (and they haven't voluntered anything) then they will get a say. His mom seemed all shocked that I didn't want a big wedding, and that I wasn't going to hire help. I wanted to scream "hello! I am not made of money!".

My dad is deceased so I am not asking my mom for help. She lives on a very small budget. Having her there is what is important!

Total rant time...we were going to get married a month earlier, but his dad goes and annouces that he can't make it that weekend..because he has a book fair (he sells) to go to that weekend. WTF???? First marriage in both of our families also. I was so mad I told my man this "At LEAST your dad is alive". He told his mom that. Youch. It hit home. I threatend to bring my dad's ashes to the wedding and put them in a chair near me. I actually would love to do that. Our wedding will be near the 3 year anniversary of my dad's death :-( I miss him a lot...and getting married has made me realize how much I miss him. I wish he was here to walk me. Part of the reason why I wanted a small wedding :-( So that I am not reminded of him not being there.”

“I didn't read through all the posts to see if this suggestion is there, but maybe you can take a hiking shot, like one of you and one of your husband to be in hiking gear, then cut the photo out and past it on a piece of cardboard and leave a spike in it or put one in to make it sit on the cake. You can print two of each of the photos so you can put one on both sides of the cardboard cut out.”
