“hello. I am planning on going to isle royale in september. i will be hiking from lake to lake. i was just wondering which lake were the best for shore fishing. any help would be appreciated.

“Chickenbone has good fishing, I saw a 4-5ft pike at McCargoe cove in 97, I imagine all of em are fairly good. Jim Dufresne wrote a book about the Isle and it has lots of fishing info if I recall. Good luck.”

“Here's the latest moose/wolf info from Isle Royale (as reported from the MTU alumni e-newsletter):

TOUGH TIMES ON ISLE ROYALE: It's shaping up to be a lean year for the
wolves and moose of Isle Royale National Park. The number of moose has
sunk to 450, the lowest since researchers began tracking their numbers
on this wilderness Lake Superior archipelago. Now in its 48th year, the
project is the world's longest-running study of predator-prey
relationships. "The moose are probably hurting because there are so
many
wolves," said Assistant Professor John Vucetich, who co-leads this
ongoing investigation with Professor Rolf Peterson. While moose have
declined, wolf numbers have been on the rise for the past several
years,
topping out at 30 in 2004-05 and holding steady this year. For the last
few years, the island's moose have been weakened by a plague of ticks,
which distracted them from feeding and caused hair and blood loss. The
ticks do not attach to humans, but they have been a bane for the moose,
making them easy prey for the wolves, who have had relatively easy
pickings since 2002-03, when the moose population stood at 1,100. Now,
however, most of the older moose have died, so wolves have had to rely
even more than usual on moose calves.”

“From what I recall there is a see-saw on the population of moose/wolves because of the small area and short time the ice is solid enough to migrate across the lake.”

“BC/NS, I know you werent implying anything. I was more lamenting that I dont get to fish like I wish I could. That 9 year old fish was the last good one I caught....Good memories though.

Sept is prolly late for berries depending on weather. Most every site is a good (minus east chickenbone) I havent been in spet but would imagine the crowds are thin.”

“I just read your article smiley and WOW 450 is crazy low. Back in 88-89 their population was over 2000, they were everywhere. It amazing to see the numbers roller coaster like they do. Years back a limited hunt was discussed (very very preliminary) as was introducing new wolves for genetic variety, I am glad nothing was done. Letting nature do its thing is so rare.
