Hello....
Well, I looked for a newbie thread, but there hasn't been an active one for a year. So, I thought I'd start one! I am a Chicago native who has lived in Northern WI since '89. I love hiking, and am interested in moving onto backpacking. I'm looking for newbies like myself, as well as patient "old-timers" who hike & backpack in northern WI. and would be interested in planning some trips. I was reading about the trip to the "Porkies" but as a newbie, I think it would be too big an adventure to start with, although I did do a little hiking up there last September, and it is breathtaking in it's beauty. I would love to do the Hidden Lakes Loops in the Chequamegon-Nicolet this Spring. It's 13 miles, so it would be a long day hike or a perfect short over-nighter.

Hi..I live in St Croix Falls, WI...that's on the Minnesota/Wis border...I am not a newbie either to this forum or to backpacking but I have always hiked like one...never been a long-distance hiker...I hike to camp at cool places and prefer to spend more time at camp than on the trail...where are you located in Northern WI? May I suggest another forum to you that many of us also use:
http://www.midwesthiker.com/

Go to the message board and you will see, under the trips thread another Porkies hike...depending on what they decide to do there's another newbie name of Bessie Lou that's wanting to do a much easier hike in the Porkies that might be just your thing...

I know many, indeed most, who post there from other trips...

For the welcome! I will definatly be lurking around here for awhile, learning whatever I can. Mataharihiker, thanks for the link, I'm heading over your way for a couple of days... taking the teenagers to Mall of America... that's the only hiking they are intereseted in doing with their mom!
P.S. I'm in the Minocqua area

I'm new here, too. I was initiated to backpacking this month with an awesome trip to the Grand Canyon. Can't help you with planning any trips; although I'm an Ohio native, I currently (unfortunately) live in Arkansas. Anyway, I just wanted to encourage you to start with an adventure--I did and now I'm hooked!

Oh yeah, Oneida County...I love it up there...since my folks spend the summer in Charlevoix, Michigan I often do sidetrips to that area with my kayak...you live in a beautiful country...Northern Highland American Legion State Forest/land....I mean c'mon, it's gotta have the longest name for a state forest in the country! so many lakes, so little time!

Northern Highland...
... does have some of the best hiking trails! I also kayak, so I have lots of fun on the Tomahawk River, which is just down the road, no matter which direction you go. I also have the Willow Flowage, which was one of my favorite camping spots, until the last few years, when they kept the water level too low for safe inboard boating. I'm going to sell the inboard anyway, I've decided to focus on the quiet sports anyway. Off I go into the jungle of Mall of America! Back on Wednesday!

Another newbie
Since I haven't found any other place to introduce myself, or even determine if doing so will call the troll-watchers down on my head, I figured I might as well say howdy here and then quietly fade back into the knotty pines or something...

So...uh, hi! Newbie from East Tennessee here...

Welcome Clickety.
The natives are not always friendly, but if you leave them alone they will probably not leave you alone. ;-)
All in all we are a pretty good group of misfits though.

if you knew me better you would know I'm a DOCM so feel free to comment

the reason I don't notice the camera is that I am not a photographer and actively avoid cameras.

Ah seriously though if you stay away from the fuego, you prolly wont have any trouble. That's what I do, and I rarely have any trouble, even then it is very minor stuff.
Don't pay any attention to the pervs. They were breast fed till the age of 15 so they can't help it. LOL!
We jabber on about a lot of useless garbage, but if you actually get us on the trail, you are guaranteed a great time. ;-)

Dare I even ask what a DOCM is, Hog??

I did notice that Fuego is a sore spot, but haven't yet figured out what it *is*...ya'll need a "Newbie's Tutorial" or something. =p

I'm amazed that it took this long for the word "trail" to pop up! lol
