I'm trying to put together a listing of reputable local outfitters. You can see the current list at http://www.thebackpacker.com/gear

So check the list and see if your local haunt is on the list. If not, just give me the info and I will add it.

Wildware Outfitters in PA is incorrect.

The correct address is 5103 Carlisle Pike.

They also have a sister location here (which you have listed - but no website URL): http://www.wildwarebackcountry.com/ (contact info on site)

And thanks!

The Gendarme Shop in Seneca Rocks, West Virginia is within about twenty miles of Dolly Sods Wilderness/Roaring Plains and Otter Creek Wilderness in the heart of the Monongehela National Forest wild country.

They are mostly a climbing shop and have some backpacking gear as well.

Eastern Mountain Sports
Crossgates Mall, 1 Crossgates Mall Road C102
Albany, NY 12203

This store moved to Stuyvesant Plaza, which is already listed.

You have The Mountaineer listed twice. It’s located in Keene Valley.

One of my local haunts that wasn’t listed is:
Saratoga Army & Navy

For Indiana, you have listed several Galyans Trading Post locations. Galyans was a great source for outdoor gear, but was purchased by Dicks Sporting Goods a few years ago.
DICKS SUCKS! I would sugest removing those locations from the list. Besides that, some of those locations listed have now closed, and there are several other locations in the area which are not listed. It would be a waste of your time to list them. Their backpacking selection isn't much better than the K-Mart.

I have been to Rusted Moon and they are very knowledgable.

You may wish to add J.L. Waters in Bloomington Indiana. They are now my favorite Indiana outfitter. http://www.jlwaters.com/

LOL
I have to agree, but I guess they are better than nothing. The Galyans in Birmingham, AL WAS great. Now that they are DICKS, they do suck.

EMS is indeed closed in MI although the store manager from the GR location is supposed to be opening his own shop. I'll send a link when I have it.

Nice to see my feelings about Dick's being echoed: they SUCK! Their piis-poor attitude towards me as a customer resulted in my losing my cool, dropping my Dick's card on the floor along with an F-bomb or two, and walking out. I have not shopped there since.

A couple of corrections for Nebraska.

Backwoods moved to 305 N 78th St, Omaha, NE 68114 (402) 345-0303.

We now have a Scheel's in Omaha, at 17202 Davenport St., Omaha, NE 68118 (402) 289-5666.

And don't forget Cabela's two stores at 115 Cabela Drive, Sidney, NE 69160 (308) 254-7889, and 3600 Highway 30 E, Kearney, NE 68847 (308) 234-3933. www.Cabelas.com

Can you put stars by real, locally owned stores with knowledgeable staff? Or a rating system of some kind? I would vote for Canfield's here.

Here are some corrections for Michigan:

Benchmark closed down a few years ago (too bad, they were great).

Galyans is Dicks, as in other states.

EMS is out of business now and if not closed already will be soon. =(

Ha ha! Wildman? Not really......I just didn't take kindly to the way I was treated and I let the smarta$$ punk manager know that. Too bad for them because I toured the store regularly. Oooooo, I really like Omahiker's suggestion to rate the stores somehow. Perhaps it could be a user rating systme where it tallies x-amount of stars and also shows the number of votes. Presumably voters would be registered TT users???

When I travel outside my area (which is every single bp trip), I would love to print off the list of gear stores near or on the way to my destination.

In conpairing the two, Dicks just looks a lot worse. Dicks would probably be treated more kindly if they hadn't taken a good general gear store and made it worse.
