I've noticed two kinds of vegans: The more fanatical ones that seem to consider animals as equal to humans in the worldly scheme of things. To them it is just as much ethical as health related.

I have some friends from India who are vegans and they don't seem to be fanatical. Vegetarianism is big in India and it just seems to be an extension of that.”

“BM..lol, I was one of those nutjobs, for years ;-) Oh yeah, and was it easy? Uh, no...man, it ate up half my day just trying to figure out what I could eat..lol! I wore hiking boots made of recyled pop bottles and hemp.
Then one day, after having had Ford (I was vegan thru my pregancy), I got this insane desire for meat. My stomach killed me for days afterwards..lol!
Thing about being a veggie is, it isn't going to hurt about anyone to eat less meat-especialy modern meat. But watch the fish consumption..you can get a lot of chemicals and heavy metals in fish .. so don't eat a lot of them.
As for protien..well, wheat itself contains a lot of protien! I rember when I was pregant, I got lectures on protien, about how I was starving myself...and I went to the store and looked around..and yep, I was fine! I ate a lot of whole grain wheat items.

A lot of people seem to go Vegan as an extent of their Vegetarianism - they find out about the factory farms that produced their egg and dairy and it overwhelms them.

I've gone to eating eggs from free ranging chickens (they taste much better!) and have cut down on dairy. I don't know if I'll ever give up my barbecue ribs or T-bone and Rib-eye steak, but living with two dogs, its hard to imagine that there isn't a lot of animal misery in those factory farms.

I'm not anti-carnivore. Animals die bloody deaths in the wild - but I think modern technological farming is far less humane than the old family farm that helped build this country.”

I would agree. Ironically it may be things like isolated foul (as in chicken, not disgusting) farming that helps to keep our friend "H5N1" from causing all the havoc its has elsewhere on food stock populations. I have read that stock birds are kept from any contact with any wild or other birds to prevent the stock form being contaminated by other bird-borne illness and that this also negates the need for many vaccinations etc...Maybe this will work.”
