vegetarian vs veganView Messages“what is the difference? I think vegan is a little cultiesh IMHO” 8:35:16 AM 3/22/06 “They're all pinko commie bastards! Vegans: don't eat, wear, or use any form of animal products (no meat obviously, and no eggs, dairy, leather, honey, gelatin...the list goes on). Vegetarians: don't eat meat.” 8:38:27 AM 3/22/06 “Vegans are a lot more hard-core than you want to be, my dear. Being married to you for 19 years, I think I can be bold enough to say that! :)” 8:39:45 AM 3/22/06 “no no not for me, i was just wondering what the diff was!” 8:41:23 AM 3/22/06 “Vegans usually do not wear any animals products, ie..no leather shoes, etc. You also consume nothing made from animal byproducts (that means you have to read every box or can of food in the store). Being vegetarian is easier ;-)” 9:10:20 AM 3/22/06 “Do they have one of those "fights" like SC was posting??” 9:13:43 AM 3/22/06 “Vegetarians taste more like chicken but are a little chewy. Vegans are very tender and have almost no taste at all.” 9:17:16 AM 3/22/06 “I'm tellin' ya, vegans can't do a room at all.” 9:19:42 AM 3/22/06 ““Vegetarians taste more like chicken but are a little chewy. Vegans are very tender and have almost no taste at all.” Nonconformist 10:17:16 AM 3/22/06 ignore this user Really? I always thought vegan's were a bit gamy.” 9:21:20 AM 3/22/06 “SHUT UP your going to make me up-cluck” 9:24:12 AM 3/22/06 “lumberzac, I have a great marinade recipe for vegan's that will get rid of that gamy taste.” 9:24:46 AM 3/22/06 “Vegans are only gamey tasting if you don't field dress them right. Try them lightly sauteed (thinly sliced) with onions and the sauce of your choice. Great on the grill too.” 9:27:16 AM 3/22/06 “True vegans are those who descended from the immigrants from Vega, without mixing bloodlines with the native Earthlings.” 9:32:25 AM 3/22/06 “Vegetarians are people who are concerned about their health and environment. Vegans are nutjob extremists with a warped sense of reality that need mental and emotional help.” 9:33:21 AM 3/22/06 “And their taste in clothing bites as well.” 9:35:31 AM 3/22/06 “Vegetarian vs. vegan? Now there’s a fight I’d like to see. And see no one win too. Vegetarians killing vegans and vegans killing vegetarians…now there is a victimless crime if ever I saw one. LOL!” 9:36:49 AM 3/22/06 “LOL!! You guys are so mean. Especially Nigal. Really though, veganism is just vegetarianism followed to its logical conclusion, albeit annoyingly sometimes, haha. If you don't think eating meat is a good idea, you have to wonder why drinking milk is. How do you think they get the cows to keep making all that milk? They keep getting them pregnant, and then taking their calves away to make veal.” 9:39:22 AM 3/22/06 “Whats the term for someone who does not consume any animal or animal product from the modern processing industry, but allows wild game and wild fish and seafood? 'Lucky' to be in such a circumstance! last edited: 3/22/06 9:42:24 AM” 9:40:03 AM 3/22/06 “Don't give me that logic stuff lyra.” 9:41:24 AM 3/22/06 “Logic has NO place on TT! I don't mind Vegies or vegans as long as they keep it to themselves and don't stare down their nose as I eat my porterhouse.” 9:43:03 AM 3/22/06 “"You eat the rabbit food, I'll eat the rabbit." --Ted Nugent” 9:47:15 AM 3/22/06 “I am around vegans a lot. What lyra said: Vegans: don't eat, wear, or use any form of animal products (no meat obviously, and no eggs, dairy, leather, honey, gelatin...the list goes on). I've noticed two kinds of vegans: The more fanatical ones that seem to consider animals as equal to humans in the worldly scheme of things. To them it is just as much ethical as health related. I have some friends from India who are vegans and they don't seem to be fanatical. Vegetarianism is big in India and it just seems to be an extension of that.” 10:00:50 AM 3/22/06 “Only Tejas could give us so much fun as Ted.” 10:02:21 AM 3/22/06 “There are vegans who just don't eat any animal products then there are veagans who use zero animal products. Generally, the zero animal products are nut jobs but I think you have to be to take it to such an extreme. Where not just talking no leather but no silk, no honey, etc.” 10:31:23 AM 3/22/06 “Ever try to drink silk?” 10:35:05 AM 3/22/06 “SHUT UP your going to make me up-cluck Can't keep your chicken down?” 10:37:07 AM 3/22/06 “BM..lol, I was one of those nutjobs, for years ;-) Oh yeah, and was it easy? Uh, no...man, it ate up half my day just trying to figure out what I could eat..lol! I wore hiking boots made of recyled pop bottles and hemp. Then one day, after having had Ford (I was vegan thru my pregancy), I got this insane desire for meat. My stomach killed me for days afterwards..lol! Thing about being a veggie is, it isn't going to hurt about anyone to eat less meat-especialy modern meat. But watch the fish consumption..you can get a lot of chemicals and heavy metals in fish .. so don't eat a lot of them. As for protien..well, wheat itself contains a lot of protien! I rember when I was pregant, I got lectures on protien, about how I was starving myself...and I went to the store and looked around..and yep, I was fine! I ate a lot of whole grain wheat items. You'll do fine, Mapes! You just need variety!” 10:37:38 AM 3/22/06 “I mean nutjob in the nicest way! LOL! I can't imagine putting that much time into it! On the east Coast they can also tend to be a little "preachy". A couple of them even tried to preach to Dani about what I should and shouldn't eat once I was diagnosed. I thought She was gonna kill a couple of them. it isn't going to hurt about anyone to eat less meat-especialy modern meat And it be a hell of a lot more healthy. last edited: 3/22/06 10:56:48 AM” 10:50:11 AM 3/22/06 “i think bacpac nailed it” 3:01:54 PM 3/22/06 “LOL BM! Yeah, uber vegans can get waaay preachy ;-) and self righteous..lol!! Don't worry, I am not Offended ;-)” 5:00:40 PM 3/22/06 “Vegans are a lot harder to cook for. My kids are both Vegans now, yikes! A lot of people seem to go Vegan as an extent of their Vegetarianism - they find out about the factory farms that produced their egg and dairy and it overwhelms them. I've gone to eating eggs from free ranging chickens (they taste much better!) and have cut down on dairy. I don't know if I'll ever give up my barbecue ribs or T-bone and Rib-eye steak, but living with two dogs, its hard to imagine that there isn't a lot of animal misery in those factory farms. I'm not anti-carnivore. Animals die bloody deaths in the wild - but I think modern technological farming is far less humane than the old family farm that helped build this country.” 9:26:29 PM 3/22/06 “"but I think modern technological farming is far less humane than the old family farm that helped build this country.” I would agree. Ironically it may be things like isolated foul (as in chicken, not disgusting) farming that helps to keep our friend "H5N1" from causing all the havoc its has elsewhere on food stock populations. I have read that stock birds are kept from any contact with any wild or other birds to prevent the stock form being contaminated by other bird-borne illness and that this also negates the need for many vaccinations etc...Maybe this will work.” 5:05:22 AM 3/23/06 “They keep getting them pregnant, lyra 10:39:22 AM 3/22/06 and just who is THEY!” 8:03:09 AM 3/23/06 “I love to go out to dinner with vegetarians. I always order a thick steak cooked medium rare. Then when it arrives and I cut it open and it is red, I say.. "mmm, just the way I like it cooked, they just knocked off the horns, wiped it's ass, and passed it across a candle twice" Then take a big bite. Seeing someone go pale while eating a salad is just #&%!$ing priceless.” 8:08:39 AM 3/23/06 “LOL thats pricless you evil bastard! saw a sign once that read " our meat is so freash, it mooed yesterday"” 8:25:45 AM 3/23/06 “LMAO..now that is a funny sign!” 9:11:33 AM 3/23/06 “Can someone post that "fight" thing so we can see who wins the "Vegetarian vs Vegan".” 9:20:58 AM 3/23/06 “Here's SOME good news that VEGETARIANS CAN REALLY sink their teeth into: Researchers have developed genetically ENGINEERED fruit trees that bear real meat! Fruit from the new Meat Trees, developed by British scientists USING GENE-SPLICING TECHNOLOGY, closely resembles ordinary grapefruit. But when YOU PEEL THE LARGE fruit open, inside is fresh beef. "Our trees may sound like something out of a science fiction MOVIE, but it's really a simple, DOWN-TO-EARTH IDEA whose time has come," declares Dr. Vincent Tartley, director of agricultural bioengineering research for the UltraModAgri Group, which CREATED THE AMAZING trees. "Vegetarians have been COMPLAINING for years that despite their moral convictions AGAINST CONSUMING MEAT, they still crave the flavor of a good steak once in a while. Now they can have their cake and eat it too." ALTHOUGH IT'S TAKEN 12 years to develop the trees, the concept is simple. "We take the genes from cattle THAT PRODUCE KEY PROTEINS and splice them into the reproductive cells of grapefruit trees," he says. "WHEN THE SEEDS mature into trees, instead of producing ordinary citrus fruit, the pulp contains meat. You get the flavor, texture -- even THE smell." Those who've SAMPLED THE MEAT agree it tastes like the real thing. "I WAS A BIT skeptical at first when I sank MY TEETH into a hamburger after they told me IT GREW ON A TREE," says Londoner Mark Basker, 41, who participated in a consumer taste-test. "But it was juicy and delicious -- NOTHING LEAFY about it at all." Meat grown on trees needs only SUN, WATER and fertilizer and thus is more cost-effective than RAISING livestock, Dr. Tartley also points out. Meat Tree PRODUCTS COULD BE on the market in Great Britain by year's end and, pending USDA approval, on dinner plates in the U.S. by 2007. Some FANATICAL VEGETARIANS insist they could never eat meat -- even if it grew on a tree and no animals had to be killed. Others love the idea. "My mouth is WATERING already," says a committed vegetarian of 20 years. BUT RELIGIOUS LEADERS are uneasy about "trans-species genetic engineering." "MIXING ANIMAL and vegetable DNA to create a new species is playing God," argues Rev. Lawrence Bedlow, Britain's LEADING EXPERT in medical ethics.” 11:27:18 AM 4/11/06 “Visitors must enter by the back door the porterhouse near the front door has 'mad tree disease'.” 11:36:37 AM 4/11/06 “Well helloooo Marvin, you sexy b-tch! :-D Those random all-caps words are so hot. UNLESS they're not really random...prolly they form a secret message for me.” 12:04:28 PM 4/11/06 “Hmmmmmm, when it comes to vegantarianizm threads there's always at least one flake to show up! >8^] last edited: 4/11/06 12:30:20 PM” 12:25:52 PM 4/11/06 “So if someone is a true "vegan", should they use down sleeping bags? Wool mittens?” 12:28:46 PM 4/11/06 “Right, no down and no wool...nothing made of animal by-products (whether from a dead or living animal) whatsoever.” 12:43:49 PM 4/11/06 “That's what I thought. There is an article in "Backpacker" this month about the CEO of Good Foods Grocery (I think that is the name) who thru-hiked the AT and is going for the triple crown. In the article, he claims to be a vegan, but his gear list shows that he uses a down bag and wool clothing.” 12:51:50 PM 4/11/06 “Maybe he should use a corn flake filled bag.” 1:09:18 PM 4/11/06 “I dunno. Too heavy and no loft.” 1:18:17 PM 4/11/06 “The cheater!! ;-) Well maybe he's only a vegan in his diet...or maybe he got that stuff (conveniently enough) before he became vegan? haha. I've known several people who considered themselves vegans and still used (but not ate) some animal by-products...I guess there are varying degrees of strictness.” 1:18:46 PM 4/11/06 “Varying degrees of cultishness......” 1:29:23 PM 4/11/06 “Yeah but what is the difference between vegetarian, Vegan and a VEGA????” 1:31:24 PM 4/11/06 “vegetarian vs vegan Isn’t that sorta like paranoid schizophrenic vs Down syndrome?” 2:41:39 PM 4/11/06
