recent SAT regrading scandal - double st andard?

In the recent SAT grading scandal, 4411 students received low scores and are getting bumped up to their correct score. Bravo, that's what should happen. According to the article below, "at least 600 students overall received incorrectly high scores on the exam, but those scores will not be lowered."

Why the heck do those kids get a free ride? Shouldn't they receive the proper grade they earned, too?

Yes, they should.

I think they should just do away with the SAT. I went to school with plenty of kids that scored in the 1400 - 1500 range that couldn't cut it in college and also went to school with kids that were in the 1000 - 1100 range that could.

I think that the SAT only tests how well you test. Many colleges these days are not even using the SAT for admissions purposes.

They probably are not lowering the incorrect high scores because those students were not "hurt" by the mistake. But yes, it is somewhat of a double standard.

Some students were hurt by the incorrect scores - the students that didn't get to colleges they were more qualified for by the accepted testing procedures.

I got a 1380 and didn't do too well in college on my first try. my head wasn't in it since i didn't know what i wanted to do. i don't remember exactly how bad i did, but i know it was bad enough that when i figured out what i wanted to do, i didn't transfer any credits, i just started over.

i now have a 4.o and i'm almost finished with my accounting degree. that 4.0 might be wrecked here in a couple of hours though. i have a tax final that has been kickin my butt. i've spent a LOT of time on this and i still don't feel 100% comfortable with the material. at a time like this i feel bad for the students who normally get average grades. i wouldn't have the patience to put in the kind of time it would take to learn this material(s-corps and partnerships).

Yeah that company screwed up big-time, huh? It is a business, and I can sort of see why they don't want to take away the kids' higher scores, since it was their fault and not the kids'. And think how baaaad it would suck to think you had gotten into a school, turned down your other offers, and then be rejected from where you thought you were going to go. What would you do then? The kids shouldn't be punished for the company's mistake. And, just think how cool it will be if some of them make the most of getting into a better school than they might otherwise have been able to...that could be a lucky break of a lifetime!

i love standardized tests. i always nail them.
it's the regular academia stuff i hate, you know, like attendance, lab reports, homework... all that crap is for the birds.

i scored in the 30's on my ACT and it took me 9 years to graduate with a 2.3

SAT scores provide useful info in context. Like recommendations (and to some extent grades), they need to be taken with a grain of salt.
There is a solid positive correlation between SAT scores and success in college - not enough to base decisions soley on SAT scores but enough to justify taking them into consideration. I definitely agree with those who seem to be saying it would be nuts to accept someone just because of a great SAT score and I'd be cautious about excluding someone just because of the SAT score.

Yeah I love standardized tests too! Whenever we got to do those Iowa tests in elementary school, it was like the best day ever...soooo nice and fun and relaxing. No joke, I heart them. Sacco's right, homework and all that is for jerks! haha.

I recently went through the college application process with both of my kids. I found that some college applications actually tell you that a high SAT score will not make up for low grades, but high grades may make up for a lower SAT score. So if you are smart enough to score high on the SAT, but unmotivated to get good grades, that would be strike against you. Of course, there are many reasons somebody might have low grades that have nothing to do with motivation, like learning disabilities.

Overall, I found that colleges seem to want well rounded students who are motivated to learn.

Lyra, good point. No reason to penalize the few that think they did better than they did. However, I think it just perpetuates the academic dishonesty cloud that hovers over many school & college campuses.

ductape - sounds like me. I was tested on the CAT for reading/comprehension at the college level when I was in elementary school, did well on the SAT, did well in high school. But failed out my first 2 years of college. Just wasn't ready for that experience. Went back on my own dime and ended up with a 3.9 GPA. I guess I just needed the perspective of some real-world crappy jobs to get my butt in gear.

LOL @ Sacco. Count me among the people who would find life much easier if all you needed for success was great standardized test scores.
