A year or more ago I completed my required EMT-I certification. Since I am an investigator there are not a whole lot of chances to practice "trauma" medicine.
I took the course BECAUSE...I was told to. But this weekend it became startlingly clear why.
Friday night I was settling into my new sleeping bag, when I hear one of the other Assistant Scoutmasters screaming for me. I answer and he explains the Scoutmaster has broken his leg. I need to mention our Scoutmaster is a paraplegic (confined to a wheelchair) but as gutsy and "gonna do it" as any of us. He sleeps in a Troop tent, and I cannot count the times we have been somewhere and seen him bouncing down the trail toward us.
Anyway I hear "broken leg" I am thinking 1. How the HELL do you do that in a wheel chair, and 2. He's in a wheel chair, whats the problem (sorry those random thoughts do hit).
I jump up, race over to his tent, apparently he tried to get in the tent with his boots on, ended up twisting the leg and breaking the femur 3" superior to the knee. I have no traction splint, so I grab some 1x4s and splint the knee to prevent movement.

As I went back to sleep I knew why I went through 9 months of school.

You never know when that kind of knowledge will need to come to use.

Geez, does he now have brittle bones or something? That's a tough break right above the knee.

Guys, he is paralyzed from the waist down, his leg twisted beneath him. Without the muscle strength it will break easily, you really do not realize how much the muscles and tendons help you when you try to screw up something.

I got a call from him today, he is doing great. Getting a pin put in, whould be out by Thursday.

LOL, he called becuase he was jonseing for a Cigar and his wifey wouldn't get any (LOL)>
