Favorite Knife
I found my Grandma's rusty "Ole Knife," (a kitchen knife) cleaned it up and made it a new handle: She did everything (butcher, cook, dig, carve) and raised the four of us with that Ole Knife there to help. Now I carry it everywhere I backpack to honor her love.

I hope its not over 4 inches long. If so its illegal, unless your hunting.

I understand. I had a Buck pocket knife I bought while in the Navy, carried it for 20 + years till one day it disappeared. I wanted to cry but felt it was "just a thing." So I bought a new one just like it.

I know in my state the laws are such, and I have reviewed other states for the same codes. As to why they have determined this, could be because of needing to have some limit of length. But then I really do not know why. My favorite is a small benchmade, and a case peanut style.

Hey thanks, waterdog, I never knew that.

I've always been partial to Buck knives (had a few Gerbers too, which I liked) but may have to check out the Benchmade.....I've heard good things about them.

After everything, I seem to gravitate to my Swiss Army knife. Not a fancy one. It is like the small tinker.

It helps that I'm out here on the Navajo Nation where it costs five bucks a day for a permit to hike or camp (yep, even if you're a Navajo) and there are only five or six Rangers to enforce this silly law on an area twice the size of West Virginia; they've got plenty else to do besides hunt me down and confiscate my Grandma's knife.

I bought my wife a ceramic kitchen knife for her birthday (about $90 suggested retail). She loves it. Don't drop it, use on hard surfaces, or chop with it. But for normal cutting board use, it rocks.

I need a favorite knife. My backpacking knife is light weight, but not very good steel and won't hold an edge for long. My hunting knife will shave hair, but it is heavy.

I need a light weight backpacking knife with a nice high carbon steel blade.

I got a Grohmann knife from my boss for my birthday last year. It has a beautiful rosewood handle. I feel almost guilty using it as my hunting knife.

This one is great for cuttin' the cheese and has a locking blade.

I love my Puma, but it is to heavy. Size matters but it can be to big.

I carry a light Buck fixed blade.

For backpacking, I love the single blade Crosslock Solitaire made by Buck. It has a lightweight plastic handle, the blade is sharp enough to cut through rope and wide enough to make a great peanut butter and jelly sammich and I can open and close it with one hand.

I'm just curious. Do those of you who carry a knife that is not part of a multi-tool also carry a multi-tool, such as a Swiss Army knife or a Leatherman, when backpacking or hiking?

It depends on how long I'm out for. If it's an overnight or weekend trip I don't carry a multitool. For anything longer I carry a leatherman. On fishing trips I also carry the leatherman for field repairs to reels and such.

So What is this about you can't have a knife over 4 inches except if hunting. How does that work, there are lots of other things to do with a big knife. I have never heard of this law. And if it does exsit why can you buy them. I'm lost with this one

I carry my buck knife and my leatherman. The only reason for keeping my buck knife is it has a locking blade.

Servial Camping would be a good reason to carry a big knife i can;t see how they would make a law saying that hunting you could carry a big knife but anything eles you can't.
