Favorite Knife “I found my Grandma's rusty "Ole Knife," (a kitchen knife) cleaned it up and made it a new handle: She did everything (butcher, cook, dig, carve) and raised the four of us with that Ole Knife there to help. Now I carry it everywhere I backpack to honor her love. last edited: 3/28/06 8:34:23 PM” 8:29:05 PM 3/28/06 “I hope its not over 4 inches long. If so its illegal, unless your hunting.” 8:50:06 PM 3/28/06 “I understand. I had a Buck pocket knife I bought while in the Navy, carried it for 20 + years till one day it disappeared. I wanted to cry but felt it was "just a thing." So I bought a new one just like it.” 8:53:30 PM 3/28/06 “why? (to waterdog) last edited: 3/28/06 8:54:31 PM” 8:53:35 PM 3/28/06 “I know in my state the laws are such, and I have reviewed other states for the same codes. As to why they have determined this, could be because of needing to have some limit of length. But then I really do not know why. My favorite is a small benchmade, and a case peanut style. last edited: 3/28/06 9:02:26 PM” 9:00:17 PM 3/28/06 “My fave is my Benchmade Mini-Griptilian.” 9:02:55 PM 3/28/06 “Hey thanks, waterdog, I never knew that. I've always been partial to Buck knives (had a few Gerbers too, which I liked) but may have to check out the Benchmade.....I've heard good things about them.” 9:12:46 PM 3/28/06 “After everything, I seem to gravitate to my Swiss Army knife. Not a fancy one. It is like the small tinker. ![]() last edited: 3/28/06 9:15:31 PM” 9:14:41 PM 3/28/06 Favorite Knife “It helps that I'm out here on the Navajo Nation where it costs five bucks a day for a permit to hike or camp (yep, even if you're a Navajo) and there are only five or six Rangers to enforce this silly law on an area twice the size of West Virginia; they've got plenty else to do besides hunt me down and confiscate my Grandma's knife.” 9:32:10 PM 3/28/06 “I bought my wife a ceramic kitchen knife for her birthday (about $90 suggested retail). She loves it. Don't drop it, use on hard surfaces, or chop with it. But for normal cutting board use, it rocks. last edited: 3/28/06 9:36:22 PM” 9:35:29 PM 3/28/06 “I have two my buck knife and my leatherman Juice. Came in handy backpacking once had to saw a limb off a fallen tree for fire wood.” 9:36:55 PM 3/28/06 “I need a favorite knife. My backpacking knife is light weight, but not very good steel and won't hold an edge for long. My hunting knife will shave hair, but it is heavy. I need a light weight backpacking knife with a nice high carbon steel blade.” 5:29:56 AM 3/29/06 “I still like my cleaver.” 7:08:42 AM 3/29/06 “Wally or The Beave?” 7:19:25 AM 3/29/06 “I got a Grohmann knife from my boss for my birthday last year. It has a beautiful rosewood handle. I feel almost guilty using it as my hunting knife.” 7:21:37 AM 3/29/06 Swiss Army Alpineer “This one is great for cuttin' the cheese and has a locking blade. ![]() last edited: 3/29/06 7:36:09 AM” 7:34:21 AM 3/29/06 “I love my Puma, but it is to heavy. Size matters but it can be to big. I carry a light Buck fixed blade.” 10:30:27 AM 3/29/06 “For backpacking, I love the single blade Crosslock Solitaire made by Buck. It has a lightweight plastic handle, the blade is sharp enough to cut through rope and wide enough to make a great peanut butter and jelly sammich and I can open and close it with one hand. 10:50:28 AM 3/29/06 “I'm just curious. Do those of you who carry a knife that is not part of a multi-tool also carry a multi-tool, such as a Swiss Army knife or a Leatherman, when backpacking or hiking? last edited: 3/29/06 10:54:31 AM” 10:53:05 AM 3/29/06 10:57:38 AM 3/29/06 “It depends on how long I'm out for. If it's an overnight or weekend trip I don't carry a multitool. For anything longer I carry a leatherman. On fishing trips I also carry the leatherman for field repairs to reels and such.” 10:58:24 AM 3/29/06 “So What is this about you can't have a knife over 4 inches except if hunting. How does that work, there are lots of other things to do with a big knife. I have never heard of this law. And if it does exsit why can you buy them. I'm lost with this one” 11:06:11 AM 3/29/06 “I'm just curious. I'm about to start leaving it at home though. I never use it.” 12:13:03 PM 3/29/06 “I carry my buck knife and my leatherman. The only reason for keeping my buck knife is it has a locking blade.” 12:25:53 PM 3/29/06 “What do people actually use a huge sheath knife for when they backpack?” 12:43:33 PM 3/29/06 “Chopping up other hikers.” 1:07:11 PM 3/29/06 “Servial Camping would be a good reason to carry a big knife i can;t see how they would make a law saying that hunting you could carry a big knife but anything eles you can't.” 1:24:39 PM 3/29/06 INTRO “"Mr. Mountain Lion, meet Joe Backpacker--uhh, hey Joe show him that neat little Swiss Army Knife you got!"” 5:40:30 PM 3/29/06 “Mine's this with a flat grind blade: http://www.grohmannknives.com/pages/r2s.html last edited: 3/29/06 7:25:10 PM” 7:24:46 PM 3/29/06 “Those grohmann knives are very sweet looking piece's.
