Beer is a favorite conversation topic up here in the great white north and I thought I would share some favorites and maybe get some of your thoughts on the subject. When I am travelling and require some frothy refreshment, I likely end up with the brand that is most familar. This doesn't always mean the best but is usually safer than being dissappointed with swill in a nice bottle. Wouldn't it be nice to know if other brands are worth trying based on somone's recommendations? Having said that here are some of my favorite beers that are available in Canada: Chimay Premiere - this is almost a fine wine of beers. Brewed in Belgium by monks, it is bottled in a large brown bottle and is corked. The alcohol content is 7% and has to be stored on its side in a cool, dark place so the sediment doesn't mix. As for the taste - Slightly cloudy, dark brown colour; soft grassy, herbal, yeasty aromas with plum notes; creamy texture; bread dough flavour; lightly bitter finish This is by far my favorite beer and is best slightly chilled. Be prepared to finish the bottle once its opened as it doesn't store well once air gets to it. For general day to day drinking - Alexander Keith's Indian Pale Ale. Brewed only in Halifax, this beer is light amber in color and doesn't have an after taste. Suggested: -Anything from 'Garrison' in Halifax though the 'Jalapeno' would likely be more of one time beer -'Rolling Rock' is a micro brewery from Alberta that is starting to gain a following throughout Canada. I recommend the 'Grasshopper' brand though it's wheaty taste may not be for everyone -Sleeman's Cream Ale - considered a premium beer it will cost more but is worth it. As with most cream ales, the taste is smooth with a very light after taste -Labatt's Genuine Draft - as the name says, a bottled draft beer and like all Labatt's products a good safe beer Want a dark (black) heavy english lager that isn't Guiness? Then try 'Double Diamond' but be prepared, this is a heavy, heady beer and will sit with you for a while These are my top choices and may not be available everywhere but are worth trying if you get the chance. I would love to get your thoughts on these if you know of them or any other brands that you have tried.” 11:27:38 PM 3/28/06 “I'm for it.” 8:56:26 AM 3/29/06 “Wow, that's quite an essay there. I don't think I've ever seen anyone abuse Bit like that. I bet he liked it! Ah, sweet beer. Let me count the ways I love thee. We have a horrible store down the street that carries over 300 types of beer from all over the world. I love trying new ones. I've watched Nigal and Birch drool over Chimay before. Quite a site.” 9:10:14 AM 3/29/06 “Y'all know what goes with beer, non??” 9:10:41 AM 3/29/06 “Come on................grope for the answer!” 9:13:45 AM 3/29/06 “Nuts!” 9:14:35 AM 3/29/06 “Not exactly what I had in mind......>8^]” 9:16:15 AM 3/29/06 “One bourbon and one shot? Frank Zappa....” 9:34:40 AM 3/29/06 “Is Hudepohl-Schoenling in Cincinnati still in biz? They brewed a great little cheap beer back in the late 70's I just loved. Little Kings Cream Ale in 7 oz bottles. There was a beer barn in Knoxville where I lived then that carried them. Have not seen them since I moved.” 10:12:08 AM 3/29/06 “Go no further than; "The Henry" - Halifax, Nova Scotia Pepperwood Bistro - Burlington, Ontario http://www.pepperwood.on.ca/ Spinnakers - Victoria, Brish Columbia http://www.spinnakers.com/ Full Stop.” 10:22:39 AM 3/29/06 “anything with color...i can't stand lagers...if you can see through it i don't want to drink it” 10:33:36 AM 3/29/06 “What ever you're paying for! That's my favorite.” 10:58:08 AM 3/29/06 ““anything with color...i can't stand lagers...if you can see through it i don't want to drink it” thriftyhiker 11:33:36 AM 3/29/06 ignore this user I'm the complete opposite. I can't stand dark beers. To me it's like drinking tar. About the darkest I’ll drink is an IPA. last edited: 3/29/06 11:04:14 AM” 11:01:09 AM 3/29/06 “Stovie: I bought an 8 pack of Little Kings a few weekends ago. Fond rememberances of my teenage years in S. Indiana... they tasted just like I remembered.” 11:28:13 AM 3/29/06 “IPA? is that India Pale Ale?...that's a pretty good one, that's my "light beer"” 11:29:11 AM 3/29/06 “Yes, IPA = India Pale Ale.” 11:35:54 AM 3/29/06 “I bought an 8 pack of Little Kings a few weekends ago. Their price is cheaper than other online stores.” 12:00:48 PM 3/29/06 “Thanks Sass. I see that place is up lizs' way. Might be a good reason to visit lizs. ;-)” 12:07:35 PM 3/29/06 “Among others! maybe if you share she'll show you her pinky thingy. ;) here's a fun site: http://beeradvocate.com/ They have critiques of beers, beer stores (my horrible little place with the dusty bottles was in there!) and brewerys. last edited: 3/29/06 12:10:09 PM” 12:08:54 PM 3/29/06 “I like all beers but the sweet ones. Springbocks. Disgusting! Don't care much for amber either. Ew. My favorite are hoppy pale ales. My favorite beer in the world is Mirror Pond Pale Ale from Deshutes Brewing in Bend OR. Yum yum yum. But I'll drink the lightest: Coors Light up to hte darkest: stouts and anything in between as long as it isn't sweet.” 12:20:43 PM 3/29/06 “Now, who knows where to get some decent moonshine?” 12:23:51 PM 3/29/06 “"I like all beers...." Dang pixie, you're my kinda woman!! Zac, lay off the tar, man!!” 12:26:27 PM 3/29/06 “ ”12:29:27 PM 3/29/06 12:31:43 PM 3/29/06 I'll Be Nice >8^) “ ”12:47:56 PM 3/29/06 “What's a good beer to have for breakfast?” 12:54:06 PM 3/29/06 “Whatever you had last night, in reverse. So, is that like where the eyeball licking thing came from on the Going to He!! thread?” 1:02:21 PM 3/29/06 “This one's a good eye-opener!!! ”1:05:07 PM 3/29/06 “I don't know, Sunshine! That's the first I've seen of that picture. It might well be a real beer.” 1:07:04 PM 3/29/06 “I love it when I'm hungover and a beautiful girl tries to lick the red off my eyeballs. But usually it's one of my dogs, and it's usually after they just licked up the pile of vomit next to me on the floor. It stings a bit at first, but after that I don't mind so much.” 1:07:32 PM 3/29/06 “IPA sucks ass! Piss water with a twang!” 1:07:35 PM 3/29/06 1:10:40 PM 3/29/06 “What a man that Buck! Reminds me of a true story. My young nephew was home on leave from Iraq a couple Christmases ago. His pretty blonde girlfriend was over and it was New Years Eve. They guys had gone outside to smoke and when they returned, the girlfriend asked my nephew to brush his teeth. His response, "What?! I kissed you that night after you were threw up along side the truck." As any good Aunt would, I smacked him up back the head and told him to go and brush his teeth.” 1:17:04 PM 3/29/06 “That'll teach him to kiss a puke mouth!” 1:19:20 PM 3/29/06 “Suck on one of these, Bearmagnet!! ”1:42:40 PM 3/29/06 “Wow!!! I am writing a few of these down but will stay away from the 'Bear Whiz'” 4:26:02 PM 3/29/06 “Okay, I'll talk about beer, but I'm not gonna think about Nigal while I do. CC is right: the Sleeman's Cream Ale rocks! I could only get it in Canada but I have found it locally a few times. If ever in Wisconsin, you have to try Spotted Cow Ale from the New Glarus Brewing Co.” 4:43:03 PM 3/29/06
