when Earth day began, 1970? it seemed there was a lot more involvement by people. Now it seems to be a somewhat forgotten icon.

I went to a big Earth Day festival held at Grandfather Mountain, NC back about 1999, sunny, mild day even with some snow still laying around.

There were dozens if not hundreds of booths displaying alternative technologies

also the usual carnival type food and merchandise vendors

some big-name entertainment like the then current version of The Marshall Tucker Band and The SnakeOil Medicine Show

and several speeches.

Thre was a good sized crowd and I guess it has been held in the years since.

Or at least an hour......
EARTH HOUR, MARCH 29, 2008, 8PM

Tomorrow, March 29, 2008 at 8 p.m., join millions of people around the world in making a statement about climate change by turning off your lights for Earth Hour, an event created by the World Wildlife Fund.

Earth Hour was created by WWF in Sydney, Australia in 2007, and in one year has grown from an event in one city to a global movement. In 2008, millions of people, businesses, governments and civic organizations in nearly 200 cities around the globe will turn out for Earth Hour. More than 100 cities across North America will participate, including the US flagships-Atlanta, Chicago, Phoenix and San Francisco, as well as Ottawa, Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver in Canada.

We invite all our marchers to turn off the lights for an hour starting at 8 p.m. (your own local time). Join people all around the world in showing that you care about our planet and want to play a part in helping to stop global warming.

Don't forget to sign up at EarthHour. org.
You can register as either an individual, organization, school or business. Once registered, you will receive information on what you can do to be more involved in Earth Hour, including useful tools and tips.

One hour, America. Earth Hour.

Turn out for Earth Hour!

what will be even better is that we throw huge parties where everyone drives their gas guzzlin suv or oil leaking clunker, we string a bunch of lights, crank up the amps on stereo, puts some kegs on ice, then party on, at 8 pm we turn off the lights and grope around in the dark, then afterwards party till the wee hours of the morning.

I will be on my way home from work then so all the lights at my house will be out while I drive my gas guzzling car for my hour long daily commute.
Perhaps I should shut those lights off to in observation. That'd show my support right?
