Tahoe-Yosemite Trail

I keep my sanity by knowing I have some trips in the works. This summer is already accounted for.

Songbyrd - Takara hasn't been on any more with me yet, but we're going to Lake Berryessa this weekend for Saturday and Sunday. It's more of a boating/camping trip, but we'll likely get some hiking in.

Olddog - be glad to have you next year as well. The advantage is that you'll be on my turf and I could easily pick you wherever you fly in.

Over the last 4 years, my summer vacations have been revolved around trips. I spent a week travelling California about 3 years ago, last year was a week in Utah (Canyonlands, Zion, Moab, Arches, Escalante, etc) and the Tahoe Rim Trail. Although I had decided to travel somewhere different each year for at least a week backcountry trip, I'd like to do the TYT before leaving California (should that happen).

“It seems that the TYT lends itself to section hiking, as it crosses several major highways on the way. Good for having people jump in for a week or so and good for restocking, too.”

“We barely know what we're doing a week before we do it, so this is a bit far in the future for a definite yes, but it is something I'm definitely interested in!”

“My thoughts are to attempt this in 12 days. That would allow for an extra day for food drops and a day for returning to Meeks Bay. Last year, I did the TRT (165 miles) in 10 days. I think this would be doable in 12 days.

I'd like to take more time, but I only get 3 weeks vacation and am planning a week in Hawaii next year.

“I went to a presentation on the JMT last week at REI in Sacramento. Although I thoroughly enjoyed the presenter, I didn't feel like he did any justice for the JMT. I was considering JMT vs. TYT. I think I'll stick with the TYT. It seems more rugged and adventurous - as well as fewer people.... so I've heard.

“I am signing up as a maybe but, along with several others, I know I cannot do the whole thing. I can probably do 6 or 7 days of hiking, depending on flights and ground transportation options. (I'd be flying in from the east coast.)”

“Given everyones interest of only doing 6-7 days, I've considered putting together a Kings Canyon trip for a week instead. I'm not sure of routes as of yet, but am researching now.

“I'm open. My goal is to do a trip somewhere in the Sierra every year. There's an awful lot of beautiful country down there. A 2-week trip would be a great challenge, but if a week long trip is better instead, I'm fine with that too.”

If you want, another option would be for 2 1-week trips. I have no problems with that. A separate region of the Sierras two weeks in a row would be cool.

I found my Kings Canyon / Sequoia map - I'm going to dig in and do some research. Perhaps Paige has some input - she's been through this area numerous times, I believe???”

“This would be my third Sierra trip in five years...the first, we went to Kings Canyon / Sequoia. (We did a loop starting at Mineral King, I think it was Sierrapalooza "One". )

So, I have a mild preference to do something different but if you choose King's Canyon, I would still be thrilled to see it again.”

“There's a 75 mile(approx, haven't traced on Topo yet) loop out of Roads End that I've been itching to do (no shuttle is a very tempting idea after this past trips shuttle expense and time). It includes Colby Pass, Forester Pass, Bubb's Creek etc. Incredible country. Was thinking 9 days.

People post trips that they themselves want to do, with some company. Presumably if there's someone in particular they want to do the trip with, then they've discussed beforehand and the trip meets their combined needs.

So robertr wants to the Tahoe-Yosemite trail. Others want to do a Sierra trip but not for that length of time. From what I've seen there are usually multiple trips posted every summer for different parts of the Sierra, for different lengths and dates so why not do one of those instead rather than asking for this one to be done differently which ultimatlly means a completely different trip ?

I don't quite get why those who don't want a 2 week trip are wanting to do this one. Alternatives are to wait for someone else early next year to post a trip that does work or organsie one's own.

Robert - re your comment about re-scheduling this trip for 2008 - my guess is you'd get the same situation with people wanting to do it but for less time, slightly differently etc.

I didn't ask for the trip to be changed. I saw others suggest that there might be a shorter option, and I raised my hand and said if there was a shorter option that would interest me.

I am extremely grateful for the efforts of those who plan TT trips, esp. in other parts of the country where I have little familiarity. And I definitely think that if the trip planner doesn't want to change the trip, they shouldn't feel any pressure to do so.”

“Aussie, I only posted an alternate because Robert asked for one, he was the one who originally suggested changing the trip. Many were thinking of just joining for a piece because this area has many exit and entry points as does alot of the Sierra.

He posted this trip extremely early probably with thoughts of flexibilty to begin with.

Robert, perhaps you should stick with the original plan, wouldn't want to chap anyones hide or confuse anyone.”

“The consideration for change arose with my trip to Glacier Nat'l Park this year. Experience has shown me that it's hard to get people interested in very challenging hikes - especially requiring long days of 15+ miles.

I hiked the Tahoe Rim Trail last year - 165 miles in 10 days. I posted it about a year early also and guess what - yep... I hiked alone. The last person bailed out the day of the trip - leaving me a note at the trailhead sign.

Typically, I wouldn't mind and I didn't. But, my lack of familiarity with the Tahoe-Yosemite trail raises some concern.

If I have a couple others who are dedicated to this trip (Tahoe-Yosemite) - then I'll continue with the original plans. As Paige mentioned, I'm simply rambling options at this point. Everyones input is respected and appreciated.”

“Hey Robert I have no interest in hiking the TYT next year cause I just finished a 2 week solo trip on it last Saturday. It was a great trip, glad I did it and wish I was still out there. If you go for it two words of advice are Long Pants for the Summit City/Mokelumne section. My legs are still healing. Anyway if I can answer specific questions let me know. (I just joined this site to start looking for partners for next year. Maybe a figure 8 in SEKI)”

“Jack... what resources did you use for trip planning? Everything I've seen is very outdated since the trail isn't actively maintained.”

“Rob... I used the 1987 edition of the guidebook supplimented with a Garmin GPS along with National Geographic topo maps I created. Suprisingly both the GPS and National Geographic topos both showed the trail on them. I can't say as I was always following where the trail originally went but I never got seriously misplaced. There are a fair amount of axed blazed trees as well as ducks along the way. I would say the biggest change on the trail is that Spicer Meadow Reservior now exists in the Carson Iceberg area. It did not show up on my maps or GPS but fortunately the guidebook mentioned it was going to be created.”

“TYT is the plan! I'm hoping to start the last week of July although may wait until the first of August, I haven't decided yet.

I bought a used copy of the TYT book last week. Also, finally bought the TOPO software and am working on my mapping.

Travel arrangements for the ride from Tuolumne Meadows back to Meeks Bay in Tahoe are set - there is room for 4 people.

“I've been up to Colby as a dayhike out of Lake Reflection. I think it is close to Thunder Mountain. Really, really spectacular area.
I think there are ways to 'loop back'.
It is all x-country after East Lake.

TYT. Are you planning on following the PCT or a separat trail? The entire PCT is on Topo map share or whatever it is called.

I did the Sonora Pass to TM this year with Vineet.

No real big passes except Benson lots of swamp out of Dorothy Lake. Lots of nasty skeeters.”

“I will obviously be doing some of the PCT, but the TYT has a route that differs in many sections. The down side is that it has a couple of road walks. I may bypass these on sections of the PCT. I just mapped out the TYT this evening - will be doing the PCT and reading up this week to decide.

Is there anyone thats actually "in" for the entire trip yet?

“Hey Rob, For waht it's worth I followed the TYT but hitched down Hwy 108 to Kennedy Meadows. One of the pluses of sticking to the route was the resupply and shower options at Lake Alpine and Kennedy Meadows plus the Emigrant Wilderness is one of my favorite spots in the Sierras north of Tuolumne. I would have to say though that the least enjoyable stretch was about 5 miles of burn area in the Carson Iceberg south of Hwy 4.”

You know, Dennis isn't good about reading his e-mail. Give me a call and I'll give you his number. Do you still have mine?

The TYT mileage is about 185 +/- 10 miles. I'm playing with the route a little to attempt to avoid the roadside hiking that is part of the original TYT. That shouldn't be too hard to do with the PCT so closeby.

I talked to Don about 3 weeks or so ago. He's doing great, said he loved Banff. He was on his way to another adventure. That guy lives the life, I'm tellin' ya.”
