Judge Sherman Ross tried to assemble a jury of peers for a woman accused of possession of a marijuana on trial Tuesday.

But authorities say prospective juror Cornelia Mayo might have taken that concept a bit too far after she was caught smoking a joint outside the courthouse during a break.

The 49-year-old Houston woman was one of 20 people in a jury pool in Criminal Court at Law No. 10.

Ross said he realized something was wrong when juror No. 2, Mayo, didn't return from a 45-minute break. Before the judge could file a bench warrant for the missing juror, his bailiff got a call from police notifying him that Mayo was being booked on a charge of smoking marijuana outside the criminal courthouse.

"I've had prospective jurors get lost before, but it never occurred to me that they might be getting ready for a marijuana trial by, allegedly, smoking marijuana," Ross said.

Vaune Dillmann grew up in South Milwaukee but long ago went off in search of weed. Make that Weed, as in the city in northern California.

In 2004, Dillmann opened the Mt. Shasta Brewing Co. and started producing Weed ales and lagers from mountain spring water. He topped each beer bottle with a cap that reads: "Try legal Weed."

"It's a play on words," he said, and a bit of innocent fun. Same with the brewery T-shirt that says: "100% pure Weed."

The feds, not known for liking fun, recently ordered him to stop using the caps.

"We interpret it as a drug reference," Art Resnick told me. He's the spokesman for the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau in Washington. "It's misleading as to the possibility of what's in the beverage and possible effects of the beverage."

In that case, there would be a lot of confused people walking around Dillmann's town, which has a population of 3,000 and a fitting altitude of 3,440 feet.

"We have a Weed college here. We have a Weed high. We have a Weed elementary. We have a Weed police. We have a Weed city council, a Weed cemetery. Everything is Weed here," Dillmann said.

He recalls the time he and his wife, Barbara, went along on a school field trip to San Francisco by bus. "On the side it said Weed High. There were so many tourists wanting to take their pictures next to that name on the side of the bus, they wouldn't let us out. What a trip, huh?"

Weed city administrator Earl Wilson has heard all the jokes. For a while there was an exit sign along Interstate 5 that gave travelers a choice that seemed profound: Weed to the right, college to the left. Photo seekers became a traffic hazard, and folks tried to steal the sign.

"People gotta have fun in life," Wilson said.
[...]
Dillmann has appealed the alcohol bureau's order, arguing among other things that maybe Budweiser had drugs on its mind, too, when it told us, "This Bud's for you."

cannabis is a starter drug and we need to kill the problem before it escalates into a greater threat. that's why it's so crucial to hammer down on marijuana use. cases like this only underscore how lax people have become and how critical it is that we continue to press the war on drugs to keep the harder stuff off the streets and out of the hands of schoolchildren.

A country that , 90 years after a failed prohibition on the stuff we're addicting our cars to now, will be the ones to stop the same problem-different drug?

Maybe 76 years.

Yogi, The joint we speak of is but one of Billions that form our flexible life. Is one just born and then one smokes one and that's the end? Something leads to that first spliff? All of those other decisions in younger life may contain the answer, but blaming parts of a simple plant relieves the parent from most of responsibility?

Okay, I'll bite, canabis is not a starter drug.

Didn't say it wasn't. It's easy to accuse canabis of being the first link of the chain. Was it Pepsi that led to beer before canabis, that....? Teens are vulnerable to good sales people not matter what the wares and the bigger the commission, the better the sales person. A pharmacist isn't going to give kids a pitch at a party or at the beach with free samples to boot. Neither all the cops in the world nor the billions we spend, will ever stop the blackmarket from providing what people want(sounds like Larry Kudlow on capitalism), so try something else, it couldn't be any worse.

Men charged after skull dug up and used as bong

HOUSTON (Reuters) - Authorities in Texas have filed corpse-abuse charges against two men who allegedly removed a skull from a grave and used it as a bong.

The Harris County District Attorney's Office confirmed on Thursday that misdemeanor abuse of corpse charges have been filed in the case.

One of the men allegedly told police they dug up a grave in an abandoned cemetery in the woods, removed a head from a body and smoked marijuana using the skull as a bong.
