Trailhead Vandalism

“That's just #&%!$ed up. WTF would people do that. At least if they tried to steal it you'd understand it.

I wnt through a spate where they kept trying to steal my car from outside the house, only the alarm would go off every time and they'd run off, leaving $200-$500 damage each time. It would have been easier on all of us if he'd just knocked on the door and asked for $100 not to steal the fecking thing.”

“Sorry to hear about the vandalism. I had a similar thing happen to me when someone threw beer bottles through the back windows of my old van when it was parked at a trailhead on the local woodlands about 20 years ago. It's a rotten feeling when something like this happens.

I think these things are more likely to happen when a trailhead is closer to a population area rather than deep in the woods. I never feel good about parking anywhere, but there's not much you can do other than not leave anything of value within sight in a vehicle just in case someone's motive is theft.”

“I know the White Mountain Forest Service takes it seriously enough that they used to post their recomendations for parking at trailheads. Fortunately the shuttle service is there, so that's a help to get you to major trailheads.”

“since they dusted for prints hopefully they will catch someone, but the chances are not to good. It really sucks to get out in the wilds to get away and enjoy nature and have some morons ruin it all.”

“I got the word out to the trail clubs and the ATC. The ATC called me last night at home for more info so the can put it in their news letter.
No word from the police on the prints yet.
The Police for that area have been great. They didnt blow it off. They patrol the parking lots by the trail constantly for that reason. I wonder how close they came to getting caught in the act ?”

“What a bummer. It's got to make you feel better that the police aren't blowing it off. I wonder if the vandals in your case didn't take anything because they did almost get caught.

Everytime I step out of the woods I get a panicy feeling until I see my car. So far we have been lucky.

There's a National scenic river up here that is know for vandalism of cars at launch areas, if it looks like you have a canoe or kayak. The trout fishermen trash your car. They don't want to share the river. At least they have a weak excuse for what they do.”

“Even if they don't have the prints on file already, they are on file now. The idiot gets busted for another crime and they'll get busted for both crimes. When my car was broken into 10 years ago they dusted for that very reason. Unfortunately they only got smudges.

I've had my car or my wife's car broken into or stuff stolen from it 5 times so I know it sucks.”

“Holly Shesh. That really stinks. My cars have been broken into and stuff stolen, but not that kind of damage. I've been thinking about this type of thing happening ever since I decided to take up backpckpacking recently. As far as that car goes, if it's not a main ride you should just put some windows in it and use it for a trail head car.”
