IE 419 Reliability Concepts and Techniques
Hi! I am teaching IE 419 Reliability Concepts and Techniques and created five teams of students for in-class projects.
http://www.csupomona.edu/~rosenkrantz/ie419/ie419s06.htm

To teach them about FMEA (Failure Modes and Effects Analysis) I assigned each group a piece of backpacking gear. Their assignment the next week is to develop a list of "failure modes" for their team's assigned piece of gear. That is, what are the ways the piece of equipment could fail because of poor design, manufacturing defects, abuse, use, misuse, wear, aging, etc. I suggested they search gear threads, but thought I would also start gear threads here for your input as well!

If you have experience with these pieces of gear or similar items, please post possible any problems or potential problems (failure modes) on the respective thread!

Thanks!
Phil

You're sending the sheep to the wolves for help? lol

Sounds like a good class.

BTW I wasn't able to get the link to work.

Geeze, what tenured professors can get away with! LOL. If only I could get tenure,..better yet a job!

Great idea! Let 'em come.

I was wondering why you were spamming the board with off-topic threads.

Violin!!! LOL

Some rapid initial responses!! I wonder if any of the students will post. There were a couple of people in the class who have backpacked. It is a fun group of students.

ChicagoMark - I should do more things like this. I have a lot of ideas.

One of my former students (Trail Angel) was a backpacker also and joined us on SierraPalooza 2004.

What gear? How's this for a defect:

The item, after 1-2 dozen uses, is going back.
