Do a tick check...View Messages“There is still snow here in the shade, but the ticks are already busy! Two today already!” 5:11:20 PM 4/15/06 “I did. this morning I put on shorts and tevas (no socks) so I could see if there were ticks out yet as it has been rather warm here lately. I took a walk in tallish grass in the woods. No ticks yet. Last eyar was very bad for ticks round here- I would get between 5-10 a walk in those woods.” 5:17:42 PM 4/15/06 “I'm offering my services to do a tick check on any of the ladies out there.” 8:32:19 PM 4/15/06 “I coulda used you last year! I had to have someone pull them from some uh...interesting out of reach places!” 8:42:56 PM 4/15/06 “By the time you can get here, they'll have their fill and fall off! But thanks anyway! ; )” 8:45:46 PM 4/15/06 “I hiked 5-6 miles on the Beaverbrook trail yesterday. A nice hike, but I must have picked off 15-20 ticks last night while laying on the couch. Don't remember seeing this many in years past.” 5:58:29 AM 4/16/06 “Guess it's already the time of year to spray clothes with permethrone/Permanone.” 9:19:26 AM 4/16/06 “They'll be comin' out of the woodwork here, as we've had an extended rainy season, with higher than normal volume... I think it's PermethrINE, lizs... and I'm sure I still got some left... good idea, that... thanks for mentioning it!” 9:21:40 AM 4/16/06 Does it really work?? “We camped in the National Forsest last year, and my daughter was so miserable she still complains about the biting flies! Does this stuff work? will it stay on while they swim? Ticks we're use to, but those biting flies are bad! The store bought stuff did virtually nothing, even our Dr. commented at the severity of the bites she had gotten when we went for her sports physical the following week. (I felt like a lousy Mom for taking my kids to the national forest!)” 11:11:17 AM 4/16/06 “Does deet do anything for repelling ticks? I understand how it works with skeeters, etc, but with ticks, they pretty much wait for the opportunity to hop on you and do it. I use 100% deet. Do ticks get repelled once they step onto deet-treated skin or clothes? Or do they just ignore it?” 1:09:24 PM 4/16/06 Permethrin “I used this while deployed in Iraq. It kept off the sand fleas and such, so I guess it works pretty well. I used a clothing treatment type which the Army supplied. We put the chemicals in a plastic bag, put in the clothes and shook the bag around, then allowed them to dry out in the sun for a day. One application would last for three months or so.” 1:15:01 PM 4/16/06 “I use Permethrin on my clothes (of course) and DEET for my skin for ages during bug season. I have not had a tick in ages. It works. Better living through chemicals!” 8:25:57 AM 4/17/06 “Black flies - check No-see-ums - check Mosquitoes - check Ticks - check Yep, they're all ready and revving up on the flight line.” 8:55:16 AM 4/17/06 “Yup, saw my first ticks of the season on one of my cats over the weekend. Wasps are out heavy around my place, too.” 10:34:38 AM 4/17/06 “Woo-woo! Tik chek! That is the bets theeng sence a regler skratchy-latchy! BWT - Sebben duts will get ded tiks and flee bugs...” 10:43:02 AM 4/17/06 “The last tick I found was a day after it had latched on at the bottom of my navel.” 11:38:33 AM 4/17/06 4:28:44 PM 11/18/06 “That's my line!” 4:31:04 PM 11/18/06 “Do a chick tech?” 4:49:20 PM 11/18/06 “Another good line is "There's a booger on your boob."” 4:59:39 PM 11/18/06 “In all seriousness, I just got back from hunting today and I must have pulled at least a dozen deer ticks off of me. Any suggestions as what to look for just in case one managed to bite me and was carrying lyme? I’ve never had ticks on me, let alone in November. It’s normally way too cold for them this time of year.” 6:20:53 PM 11/18/06 “there is sometimes a characteristic circular red rash that shows up. But I have seen information that it is not always present. Probly best to go to one of the web med sites and find out” 6:25:38 PM 11/18/06 “LZ - don't quote me but I believe the tick must be attached for ~12hrs for transmission to occur. To completely ease your mind you can get a blood test, no?” 7:26:32 PM 11/18/06 “And/ like you said, what the hell are the ticks doing out? Aren't they gone after first frost? Did you have a warm-up up there?” 7:27:38 PM 11/18/06 “the longer the tick is attached... the more possible the transmission.... that is correct.” 8:59:03 PM 11/18/06 “Thanks everyone. I haven't found attached ticks or any bit marks for that matter, so I think I'm safe. “And/ like you said, what the hell are the ticks doing out? Aren't they gone after first frost? Did you have a warm-up up there?” bearmagnet 8:27:38 PM 11/18/06 Bear, we had temps in the 60's and 70's last week. The weather's been f'ed up lately. Normally there's snow on the ground this time of year. At least the temps finally dropped last night and it looks like we'll have colder weather finally this week.” 7:06:25 AM 11/20/06 “LOL...when I have to treat a female I usually find another female to treat them or I have a witness...too easy to get those accusations (LOL). In the emergency med business we are cautioned against checking the Femoral artery on a female.” 8:08:22 AM 11/20/06 “Zac, it may take as long as two weeks to feel any ill effects. Watch for the target, although the one that gave me Lyme didn't show. Also, blood tests yield false negatives often enough. I had three false negs before the the positive result. Whatever you do, do not ignore this!” 8:16:14 AM 11/20/06 “Tree would you suggest prophylactic (whatever) antibiotics in a suspect case?” 8:55:08 AM 11/20/06 “Last June, Maple and I were up at a rock festival in Milford, Pa. I believe I may have picked up a tick while we were searching for a missing person (which turned out to be a hoax that shut down the festival, but that's a story for a different time). I found it in the back of my head about 48 hours later. Although it was bigger than a deer tick (probably partially fattened up from being there so long), my doc said I had to go on three week anti-biotic regimen again. He said if it had only been an hour or so, I may not have had to do it. So, I would say you're probably right, XL. Anti-biotics may be a good idea. But, Zac should see a doc and get blood taken and get started on the AB's, if the doc thinks so.” 10:53:01 AM 11/20/06 “Sounds like I should give my doctor a call. I guess now is as good a time as any to try out the health issuance I've been paying for the past 4 years that I haven't used yet. I wonder if my records will be in storage again.” 11:24:22 AM 11/20/06 “First of all, thank whatever powers-that-be that you have been healthy enough to say that. Then, get your ass to a doctor. Zac, seriously, I wouldn't wish what I went through on anyone when it comes to Lyme disease. It was hellish and my joints have not quite been the same since. This is why I sound the way I do about tick bites. Personally, I wouldn't hesitate to get it checked out, especially given the amount of bites you got.” 11:43:19 AM 11/20/06 “Actually TB, the ticks that I pulled off and killed were simply crawling around on my cloths (one was crawling on my neck). I'm not sure if any had bitten me. When I got home, I examined myself and didn’t find any additional ticks on me. Still maybe it’s not a bad idea to give the doctor a call and see what he thinks. I’m lucky that I stay healthy and I’d like to keep it that way.” 11:53:48 AM 11/20/06 “Misunderstood. When you said you picked a dozen ticks off you, it sounded like you were bitten. Maybe a visit wouldn't hurt. I never even saw the one that got me, nor did it leave a target.” 12:05:59 PM 11/20/06 “Laurel just got her first tick. HPM was washing her hair, and found it crawling on her head. He's grossed out, and Laurel thought it was neat. Deer tick, by the way, and a good-sized one. She's been playing out in tall grasses and dirt all day, so I'm not too surprised.” 7:18:33 PM 3/31/07 “watch for that bull's eye rash! and not everyone gets it, so be on the lookout for any illness, it affects neuro.” 7:20:31 PM 3/31/07 “It didn't bite. It was still crawling.” 7:21:34 PM 3/31/07 “Abby got one on her head when she was four months old. The babysitter found it (thought it was a spider) and called Birch. He rushed home from work and called the health dept in Ohio (where we took her backpacking). Freaked us out! No lyme disease in that area tho.” 7:31:56 PM 3/31/07 “I couldn't believe how quick those things were out... snow leaves/ticks come out to eat. Dang had a full one fall off the dog before I even realized they were out!” 12:55:10 PM 4/01/07 “just because it was crawling when you found it, doesn't mean it hadn't already bitten.” 12:56:30 PM 4/01/07 “don't they generally bite and stay put, then fall off when they are full?” 1:02:26 PM 4/01/07 “Yes that's exactly what they do. And no it didn't bite her.” 3:03:14 PM 4/01/07 “The other day I heard a new song on the radio (and yes, sometimes I listen to country so don't give me any crap). Here are the lyrics. It cracked me up. Made me think of hiking with Jerbear. Being the gentleman that he is, he always offers to check us women for ticks. Not sure of the title, Check You for Ticks maybe Sung by Brad Paisley Every time you take a sip In this smoky atmosphere You press that bottle to your lips And I wish I was your beer In the small there of your back Your jeans are playing peekaboo I'd like to see the other half of your butterfly tattoo. Hey that gives me an idea Let's get out of this bar Drive out into the country And find a place to park. 'Cause I'd like to see you out in the moonlight I'd like to kiss you way back in the sticks I'd like to walk you through a field of wildflowers And I'd like to check you for ticks. I know the perfect little path Out in these woods I used to hunt Don't worry babe I've got your back And I've also got your front Now, I'd hate to waste a night like this I'll keep you safe you wait and see The only thing allowed to crawl all over you when we get there is me. You know every guy in here tonight Would like to take you home But I've got way more class than them Babe that ain't what I want. 'Cause I'd like to see you out in the moonlight I'd like to kiss you way back in the sticks I'd like to walk you through a field of wildflowers And I'd like to check you for ticks. You never know where one might be There's lots of place that are hard to reach I gotcha. I'd like to see you out in the moonlight I'd like to kiss you baby way back in the sticks I'd like to walk you through a field of wildflowers And I'd like to check you for ticks. I'd sure like to check you for ticks...” 4:59:31 PM 4/01/07 “ROFLMAO!” 10:01:23 PM 4/01/07 “my lord... sounds like it could be the new state song for WI.!” 10:05:08 PM 4/01/07 “Too funny. Jerbear to a tee! =D” 1:04:18 PM 4/02/07 “Pamela, nothing to worry about. They only bite once and then stay put until you pull them out or they become engorged and fall out. Even then you have 24 hours after they dig in before they can transmit Lyme disease to you. So even if you find one burrowed in, relax.” 1:36:31 PM 4/02/07 “That must be why the tics up here wear wristwatches:)” 1:43:50 PM 4/02/07 “Had my first two wood ticks of the season up here in the U.P. after a 5 mile hike!! EWWWW!” 10:52:11 AM 4/22/07 “They've been active in NW Wisconsin for well over a month, going away when it snows and returning on the warm days. I removed more than 20 from my dog. She refuses to help with mine.” 12:13:51 PM 4/22/07
