(I felt like a lousy Mom for taking my kids to the national forest!)”

“Does deet do anything for repelling ticks? I understand how it works with skeeters, etc, but with ticks, they pretty much wait for the opportunity to hop on you and do it. I use 100% deet. Do ticks get repelled once they step onto deet-treated skin or clothes? Or do they just ignore it?”

“I used this while deployed in Iraq. It kept off the sand fleas and such, so I guess it works pretty well. I used a clothing treatment type which the Army supplied. We put the chemicals in a plastic bag, put in the clothes and shook the bag around, then allowed them to dry out in the sun for a day. One application would last for three months or so.”

“I use Permethrin on my clothes (of course) and DEET for my skin for ages during bug season. I have not had a tick in ages. It works. Better living through chemicals!”

“In all seriousness, I just got back from hunting today and I must have pulled at least a dozen deer ticks off of me. Any suggestions as what to look for just in case one managed to bite me and was carrying lyme? I’ve never had ticks on me, let alone in November. It’s normally way too cold for them this time of year.”

“LZ - don't quote me but I believe the tick must be attached for ~12hrs for transmission to occur. To completely ease your mind you can get a blood test, no?”

Bear, we had temps in the 60's and 70's last week. The weather's been f'ed up lately. Normally there's snow on the ground this time of year. At least the temps finally dropped last night and it looks like we'll have colder weather finally this week.”

“LOL...when I have to treat a female I usually find another female to treat them or I have a witness...too easy to get those accusations (LOL).

In the emergency med business we are cautioned against checking the Femoral artery on a female.”

“Zac, it may take as long as two weeks to feel any ill effects. Watch for the target, although the one that gave me Lyme didn't show. Also, blood tests yield false negatives often enough. I had three false negs before the the positive result. Whatever you do, do not ignore this!”

“Tree would you suggest prophylactic (whatever) antibiotics in a suspect case?”

“Last June, Maple and I were up at a rock festival in Milford, Pa. I believe I may have picked up a tick while we were searching for a missing person (which turned out to be a hoax that shut down the festival, but that's a story for a different time). I found it in the back of my head about 48 hours later. Although it was bigger than a deer tick (probably partially fattened up from being there so long), my doc said I had to go on three week anti-biotic regimen again. He said if it had only been an hour or so, I may not have had to do it. So, I would say you're probably right, XL. Anti-biotics may be a good idea. But, Zac should see a doc and get blood taken and get started on the AB's, if the doc thinks so.”

“Sounds like I should give my doctor a call. I guess now is as good a time as any to try out the health issuance I've been paying for the past 4 years that I haven't used yet. I wonder if my records will be in storage again.”

“First of all, thank whatever powers-that-be that you have been healthy enough to say that. Then, get your ass to a doctor. Zac, seriously, I wouldn't wish what I went through on anyone when it comes to Lyme disease. It was hellish and my joints have not quite been the same since. This is why I sound the way I do about tick bites. Personally, I wouldn't hesitate to get it checked out, especially given the amount of bites you got.”

“Actually TB, the ticks that I pulled off and killed were simply crawling around on my cloths (one was crawling on my neck). I'm not sure if any had bitten me. When I got home, I examined myself and didn’t find any additional ticks on me. Still maybe it’s not a bad idea to give the doctor a call and see what he thinks. I’m lucky that I stay healthy and I’d like to keep it that way.”

“Misunderstood. When you said you picked a dozen ticks off you, it sounded like you were bitten. Maybe a visit wouldn't hurt. I never even saw the one that got me, nor did it leave a target.”

“Laurel just got her first tick. HPM was washing her hair, and found it crawling on her head. He's grossed out, and Laurel thought it was neat. Deer tick, by the way, and a good-sized one. She's been playing out in tall grasses and dirt all day, so I'm not too surprised.”

“Pamela, nothing to worry about. They only bite once and then stay put until you pull them out or they become engorged and fall out. Even then you have 24 hours after they dig in before they can transmit Lyme disease to you. So even if you find one burrowed in, relax.”
