Hello John Deere Green

“After doing some negotiating I accepted a offer from John Deere to go to work at their East Moline Harvester works Plant. I gave my 2 weeks in at Case this morning. This gets me what I want as I'll be moving in with my fiancee by the end of the month and the Quad Cities is where we want to rasie our family.”

Many years ago I ended a RAGBRAI (Register's Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa) in the Quad Cities.

Have been to the John Deere Museum, whichever one of the "quads" it's in (Moline?) It was cool.

“Yep, did RAGBRAI back around 1981 or 82 with my then new wife.
Met the buses and tractor trailers in Davenport.
Loaded the camping gear and bikes.
They bused 100s and 100s of us up to Sioux City and we took off on our bikes across Iowa.
Ended back at our van in Davenport a week or so later.”

“The main things I learned about Iowa is it is not flat, the summers are very hot, and a lot of corn was grown there.
The Pork Producers grilled some of the very best chops I have ever had.”

“Just to get everyone straight I worked for Case in Burlington Iowa. Just 70 miles south of the Quad Cities. But thank you all for the congrats. Also I know John Deere just bought a green company up in Canada. Before you flame me the company makes forestry equipment but its the cutting edge low impact equipment. The kind with legs that walk through the trees and can get in and cut certain types leaving younger trees behind.”

“Hey, there's even a trail conference in the QC this fall... There are a lot of bike trails and even a bike ferry across the Mississippi, I rode off a few pounds when I lived in Davenport. (I worked at Rock Island Arsenal for a couple of years. I even got detailed to Iowa Army Ammunition Plant for six weeks so I spent a lot of time in the Pzazz! Motor Inn in Burlington.)

There are things I miss about the QC (like Whitey's, the Belgian Village, and the Iowa Machine Shed) but it sure is a long way from there to any unprogrammed outdoor territory so PA probably suits me better overall.”

“QC is a nice area with lots to do. Miles and Miles of bike trails So I'm looking forward to that. I spent my college year in Davenport going to St. Ambrose so I know the party sence pretty well. My fiancee (filtergryl, she hardly ever posts) works a a nurse in one of the major hospitals.

Where in PA do you live ki0eh. I spent a week in Pittsburgh and hiked around at Ohiopyle state park. Great hiking I thought.”

“Harrisburg-Hershey area. It's kind of on the edge of both mountains and megalopolis, with some mini-urban renaissance. The river's wider than in the QC but it won't float anything bigger than a jet ski (tourist tour boat runs aground regularly).

I always thought Burlington had a lot of potential to have character, with lots of old brick buildings, the steep street, and river bluffs enough to resemble actual hills. I haven't been there since '98 though (except for riding a train thru).

I sure don't remember much about a "party scene" in the QC (lived there '96-'98) but I was too old for college stuff even then...”
