The bank, Central Pacific Financial, was an unlikely candidate for a program designed by the Treasury Department to bolster healthy banks. The firm's losses were depleting its capital reserves. Its primary regulator, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., already had decided that it didn't meet the criteria for receiving a favorable recommendation and had forwarded the application to a council that reviewed marginal cases, according to agency documents.

Two weeks after the inquiry from Inouye's office, Central Pacific announced that the Treasury would inject $135 million.

Many lawmakers have worked to help home-state banks get federal money since the Treasury announced in October that it would invest up to $250 billion in healthy financial firms. But the Inouye inquiry stands apart because of the senator's ties to Central Pacific. While at least 33 senators own shares in banks that got federal aid, a review of financial disclosures and records obtained from regulatory agencies shows no other instance of the office of a senator intervening on behalf of a bank in which he owned shares.

Inouye (D-Hawaii) declined a request for an interview but acknowledged in a statement that an aide had called the FDIC to ask about Central Pacific's application. Inouye said he was not attempting to influence the outcome. The statement did not address Inouye's personal role in the inquiry, including whether he directed the aide to make the call or knew at the time that it had been made. ”

Jury sees videos of La. congressman accepting cash

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) — A federal jury has seen video of a former Louisiana congressman accepting a suitcase filled with $100,000 in cash outside a northern Virginia hotel.

The videos played Tuesday are a key piece of evidence in the bribery trial of William Jefferson, a Democrat who represented parts of New Orleans. He's accused of accepting more than $400,000 in bribes to broker business deals in Africa.

The FBI recorded the pickup from four different angles, all of which were shown to the jury.

On the video, Jefferson seemed wary of accepting the money in public. When asked by an FBI informant if he wanted to peek inside the suitcase at the contents, he tersely replied, "No, I would not."

Jefferson's lawyers have said Jefferson's business deals weren't illegal.

Despite their claims to the contrary, the way that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid have handled the healthcare bill has been anything but transparent. And, if the left-wing blogosphere is to be believed, the two congressional leaders intend to keep the deliberations secret as they try to merge the House and Senate versions of the legislation into something that will pass both chambers.

The Talking Points Memo website reported Monday that Democrats in both the House and Senate are saying the process will likely follow the path of the House taking up the Senate-passed legislation, amending it and sending it back to the Senate, which will have to pass it again. "This process cuts out the Republicans," a House Democratic aide told TPM, indicating the congressional majority intended to make sure the Republican minority would "not have a motion to recommit opportunity."”

“Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon resigning


Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon is stepping down, the result of a guilty plea entered Wednesday on one count of perjury.

Dixon’s resignation will become official Feb. 4, when she is sentenced. Dixon, a Democrat, was convicted in December on one count of embezzlement stemming from her use of gift cards given to the city by Patrick Turner, a developer. Turner claimed the gift cards were intended for the needy.

The trial offered a window into what critics have long derided as a pay-to-play mentality at City Hall that tarnished Baltimore’s reputation.

Dixon will receive four years probation as part of her plea. The mayor will hold a press conference is at 5 p.m. at City Hall.

Dixon was the former president of the Baltimore City Council who became mayor in January 2007. She ascended to the top job after then Mayor Martin O’Malley became governor, defeating Republican Robert Ehrlich.

Baltimore City Council President Stephanie Rawlings-Blake will ascend to the top job after Dixon's resignation.

In response to a Republican lawmaker who requested a probe into dismissed complaints against the New Black Panther Party, the Justice Department's Inspector General said he has been unable to investigate because he lacks the authority.

Justice Department Inspector General Glenn A. Fine wrote in a four-page letter to Rep. Frank Wolf of Virginia that Congress stripped him of the power to investigate all alleged wrongdoings within his department.

Wolf had asked for an investigation into what he claimed was an "unfounded dismissal" of complaints against the group.

The complaint accused the New Black Panther Party of voter intimidation during the 2008 presidential elections.

Fine wrote in his letter to Wolf that "unlike all other OIGs which have unlimited jurisdiction to investigate all allegations of waste, fraud or abuse within their agencies, the Department of Justice OIG does not."

"There's a new sheriff in town." That is the mantra Labor Secretary Hilda L. Solis has repeated in dozens of speeches as a way of contrasting herself with her predecessor, President George W. Bush's long-serving Labor Secretary Elaine Chao. It was Mrs. Solis' way of announcing that the Labor Department will get serious and really crack down on infractions of labor law.

Last year, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), an arm of the Labor Department, leveled what Workforce Management magazine called a "historic" fine against oil refiner BP. The $87.4 million fine for workplace safety violations was four times higher than the $21 million the company was forced to pay following a fatal explosion in a Texas refinery in 2005.

The fine came at the end of an intensive six-month investigation by OSHA and clearly was intended to send a message. "Let me be clear: The administration will not tolerate disregard for our laws," Mrs. Solis said in a teleconference - in case we missed the point. "Employers have a legal and moral responsibility to protect their workers, who, ultimately, are America's most important asset."

However, at the same time that Sheriff Solis is coming down hard on companies for any violations of labor law, she also is proving remarkably lenient on the abuses of organized labor.

Under Mrs. Chao, unions had to file a form called an LM-2, itemizing their major expenses, which then were posted online. Mrs. Chao's Office of Labor Management Standards (OLMS), usually acting on the complaints of rank-and-file union workers who could read its Web site, was able to obtain more than 900 convictions and $91.5 million in restitution of union dues from 2001 to 2008.

Union bosses hated the disclosure requirements and painted Mrs. Chao as "anti-worker." But the Labor Department worked with unions to help make reporting easier, and the focus of OLMS was more on restitution than convictions. The point was to make sure that money that was wrongly taken from workers was paid back.


When the Republicans take back the Congress they should pass Nation Wide "Right To Work Laws" that supercede any state law. They should mandate that organizied employees have to pay ONLY what the cost of operations of the union is and that they can choose to donate to any political action committees.

Finally the UNIONS should be forced to publically report every dollar spent. From salaries of the Thug Leaderships to the money they spend bribing liberal democrats.”
