There is so much political corruption on Capitol Hill that the FBI has had to triple the number of squads investigating lobbyists, lawmakers and influence peddlers, the Daily News has learned.

For decades, only one squad in Washington handled corruption cases because the crimes were seen as local offenses handled by FBI field offices in lawmakers' home districts. . . .

But in recent years, the Jack Abramoff lobbying scandal and other abuses of power and privilege have prompted the FBI to assign 37 agents full-time to three new squads in an office near Capitol Hill.

FBI Assistant Director Chip Burrus told The News yesterday that he wants to detail even more agents to the Washington field office for a fourth corruption squad because so much wrongdoing is being uncovered. . . .

Two years ago, only 400 agents worked on public corruption cases. Now, 615 agents nationwide - including 30 in New York - are trying to nail public servants for betraying the public trust in 2,200 ongoing cases. . . .

Burrus wouldn't speculate about why there is so much graft, but said, 'We have to pull the whole weed up or it's just going to grow back again.'"

Yep, I see a definite pattern. I see lefties like you posting links from admittedly liberal groups like CREW & somehow suggesting this is legitimate info from a reliable source without an agenda.

Re-read what I wrote, please. What I said was that the source of the data, CREW, was admittedly liberal, suggesting they had an agenda. That is not my "opinion", it is their stated purpose! Go to their website & check them out.

My summary, therefore, is that if the source is contaminated, what eminates forth from it is then also obviously contaminated.

Please note also I didn't try to suggest some conservative information source... both would be equally contaminated with their respective agendas... I was decrying the lack of OBJECTIVE information!

Wish I knew! What I've been railing about most recently is the lack of accurate, non-judgemental sources of info from some group without an agenda. I've given up on most popular "media" outlets, most newspapers lean one direction or the other (and let's be honest, most lean left), Fox leans right, CNN leans left, etc., etc., etc.

Point is... consider the source before you take any info as the gospel truth. CREW, the group V-man cited above, is admittedly lefist, so I automatically discount, or at least question, their data. I would say the same for a right-leaning source.

No, what it means is that, at the time I wrote that, I believed the conservative vote was the best for America. I've never said I wasn't conservative in some respects... I freely admit and am prod of the fact that I happen to believe in many of those old-time, out-of-date philosophies like self-responsibility, etc. BUT...I also believe in a social safety-net, and support what some would consider "leftist" positions. What I have always ranted about here was the "broad brush" so many on TT use to paint someone as "this" or "that", when in reality they may be a little of both. One does not have to be an extremist to have passionate beliefs about an issue. AND... one can be a Repub on one issue and a Dem on another... not everyone is a blind extremist with an inability to reason.

CREW is a group which purports to be providing you with specific analytical objective data.

wanderer is playing the role of an analyst of many sources of data.

If the group providing specific objective data is so blatantly biased, it's normal to consider the source as suspect.

Of course we should consider anybody providing analysis as suspect! But when the objective analysis is skewed, you have not a philosophical problem, but a moral one.

You should consider that source (CREW) along with consideration of their bias, as you would with any "objective" analysis.

Actually, Moonglo, (and kleetn), I didn't consider kleetn's response a personal attack. The way I originally responded to Kleetn's post could have been interpreted a couple different ways, it wasn't meant as a "personal attack" against kleetn, just as I didn't interpret his response to be a "personal attack" against me.,

Having said that, and now back to the topic at hand :), I believe more than ever in what I wrote in that old thread you referenced, kleetn; I still believe the very best thing you can do, if you really care about people and are compassionate, is to vote conservative!

Thanks for that old reference & the opportunity to once again give people a reason to vote for what's best for all of us... VOTE CONSERVATIVE!

Sen. Wayne Bryant, the powerful chairman of the Appropriations and Budget Committee, stepped down from the influential post yesterday amid mounting political pressure over a federal monitor's findings that he ordered the state's medical university to give him a no-show job.

The Camden County Democrat temporarily gave up his membership and chairmanship of the key legislative committee, pending an ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding the job he held for three years at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.

Senate President Richard Codey (D-Essex) immediately named Sen. Bernard Kenny Jr. (D-Hudson), the Senate's majority leader, as interim chairman of the committee.

"After careful consideration and discussion, Senator Bryant and I agreed that this decision was in the best interest of everyone involved," Codey said yesterday afternoon in a statement. He declined to comment further.

Bryant's decision came after a Sunday telephone conversation with Codey, a longtime political ally who initially resisted calls for his removal. Soon afterward, Bryant sent a one-sentence letter to Codey, saying: "After thoughtful discussion with you during the week, I request that I temporarily step down from the Budget and Appropriations process and that an interim chairperson be appointed."

Questioned by reporters on his way to the Senate session in the Statehouse yesterday, Bryant would not discuss the situation. "I think my letter speaks for itself," he said. He would not speculate on how long he might be sidelined.

Meanwhile, Gov. Jon Corzine has directed his counsel to review Bryant's activities as budget chair.

"There are enough things that raise questions that it's appropriate to find out what happened, when it happened and why," said the governor.

The political furor over Bryant was ignited last week by a highly critical report by a federal monitor concluding that the senator from South Jersey was given a no-work job at UMDNJ, which essentially allowed him to "lobby himself" to get taxpayer funds for the school.

The report was presented to the U.S. Attorney's Office, which is investigating Bryant's role at UMDNJ as part of a continuing probe into the university.
